Haha!!!!! This is the stupidest video I have ever seen. These jokers are just trying to exercise power because they have none and are jealous of the responsibility and power that police have to protect out streets and risk their lives every day at work. These guys are almost as bad as that cult/church group protesting military funerals.
@mfd2950 They can't ask us to follow the law if they are not. They are not protecting anything. If you cannot figure out a way to take care of yourself then you shouldn't be living. You are a sheep. Also, cops are not intended to have "power". No one is jealous. I am a veteran and can be a cop anytime I choose, but don't because it is a corrupt system that is not needed. I don't think it is right that just because one is born in the US that they consent and pledge allegiance to the laws.
@fthecops1 I'm actually not a sheep, I'm the sheep dog. I'm one of these assholes that goes to work everyday not knowing if I'm saying goodbye to my family for the last time. I go to work knowing that I may be shot at, stabbed, assaulted, and may have to sacrifice my life for a complete stranger. If you're house gets burglarized or you get robbed, don't call the police. Call a crack head and see where that gets you.
@mfd2950 Sheep dog, really. That's the problem. You are no better than anyone out there. You do not get special thanks and you are not special because YOU choose a job. I am an army vet and have never even used the word sacrifice to describe my job. You do not do it for complete strangers. You do it for yourself and your image. The cops aren't worth fuck all after a place has been robbed. A crack head might actually know where my stuff is, for a price.
@fthecops1 I don't do my job for the image. Speaking of image... why the hell did you have to mention you were a vet? You say you can be a cop but you forgot that cops have to take a psych test you loony vet. Too bad they just repealed don't ask don't tell. If they did it sooner, you would have been able to openly serve.
@mfd2950 You do it for the image which is why you call your self a sheep dog. I am not entirely sure you have even passed academy. You completely implied that you were a cop to begin with. We do take a psych test you moron. Much more thorough than a cops. Also I'm married. I hope you get shot in the face by a co-worker. You fucking shit bag. I seriously would whop your ass if we were face to face. I did a real service. You are a coward with a badge. Don't waste your time responding.
@fthecops1 You will never know what a cop's psych test consists of because your application would get thrown away. Your grammar is horrible. Have fun hating the cops... we will continue to be appreciated by most of society and will continue getting a kick out of people like you. Haha
@mfd2950 Wrong again. My app would go to the top of the list. That is the way it works when one has service behind them. My grammar is fine. Are you suggesting that cops are college educated english majors? You are not supported by a majority. Feared yes. Supported no. The people are already rebelling against the system as it stands. I can see by your attitude that you will be staring in your own PB youtube vid shortly after graduating the academy.
It would probably help ur cause if u posted section numbers of the Federal, State, and Local Laws these Officers are violating. Those are usually Department regs, that can be suspended by the Chief.
Hey douchbag...where is this "National law" that says that police officer has to display a badge number? You have too much damn free time, smoke too much weed, and like to push peoples buttons, eh?
Good job man!! You need to watch the watchers! The Constitution is the supreme law of the land, if the cops violate that......then they are in contempt of the people. F>F>A (Freedom Fighters of the Awakening)
Check YOUR facts... I necer said it was in a city park. The chief has kicked around the idea of simply turning the sprinklers on. Problem solved. You son't need to arrest a crowd to dispurse them.
If I'm supporting your point then what are you argueing about? you said "If you are suspected of a crime, you MUST provide ID to the officer. If you do not, you can be detained," - I proved you wrong. "they can search you and your vehicle," that os soooo very wrong. Check Arizona V. Gant.
Your an idiot if you think you can just get a bumch of buddies together and block streets and sidewalks. Try it and let me know what the business end of an FN 303 chemical munitions launcher feels like.
See what kind of control these guys are under when the other officer says "seal it" he shuts up like the good trained slave he is he does what he is told and if he obeys orders he is rewarded
Can I cite a law that says police don't have to show ID? Are you really that ignorant? Can you show me a law that says you dont have to give me all your money? You are so dumb-ass backwards you don't even see it. Let me explain how our civilized society works. If it ain't on the books, it ain't so. Explain to me your super duper cover everything rule of law? (this ought to be good...)
Police don't NEED a right to secret policing. The laws that govern thier authority allow for it and so they do it. Why not? The supreme court said that law enforcement may engage in deception. period. you think a meth dealer is going to do a hand to hand sale with a narcotics officer in full uniform? Really??? Putting U.C.'s in crowds is great for gathering intel and I'm glad they do it. What's wrong with it?
Cops at protests, protect protesters as much as police them. protestors commonly violate laws regarding obstructing right of ways (and about a dozen others). Cops cannot turn a blind eye to that because the other taxpayers who are not breaking the law expect them to take action. Here in Denver, many groups that I would call hate groups like neo-nazi's and the KKK get permits to ralley at the capital, and the cops police them while protecting them and thier 1st ammendment rights.
@trapstar918420 : Actually, you usually do. Unless you plan to keep you group small enough to not block any public right of way. Protests by permit holders get the best spots. You can get permits for high visibility spots like the capitals steps.
Anybody else confused about anything? Need some clarification?
Tell that to the million man march. The right to peaceable assemble and protest was written clearly into our constitution. I would LOVE to see any riot police force try to contain and arrest 50,000+ protesters, like those in Cairo for not having a permit to protest. When you have a real protest, which has a decent number of people in it, the last think they need is a frickin permit. The million man march was NOT like the KKK asking to march on the capitol.
@trapstar918420: Fail! The million Man March (Which was actually about 400K people) did have a permit. They set up stands and a stage and it took place on the Washington mall. Not a whole lot to interfere with there. The rally set up by Glenn Beck on 8/28, permit. The permit for the 1995 "Million Man March"... was issued for one million attendees.
@AJS0121 Ok stupid ass, you completely missed my point. Try to arrest 400k people for not having a permit to protest. I will admit I am wrong when I see tens of thousands of people rounded up and arrested. For example, every year in Boulder, CO on April 20th, around 10k people gather on the CU campus to smoke marijuana. They are ALL breaking federal, state, and local laws by smoking in public. NONE of them are ever arrested. NONE of them ever have a stupid permit.
@trapstar918420 : I'm familliar with the smoke out. The chief of police chooses not to take enforcement action however, it takes place in a park. There is no obstruction of public right of ways. These people are commiting a class 2 petty offense, the lowest crime on the books in Colorado. So it is what it is. And what noble cause are all those stoners trying to support by exercising thier right to peaceably assemble?
@AJS0121: ...The officer may chose a custodial arrest to get your photo a fingerprints back at the station whereas if you had state issued photo id, he may have just given you a ticket on the street. If you are stopped for a traffic violation on a public right of way, you must present your drivers license because title 42 requires drivers to carry thier license on thier person when operating a motor vehicle in the public right of way. That is the only situation you MUST provide id.
@AJS0121 The chief of police may say he "chooses" not to act, but everyone knows he has absolutely no choice in the matter. The Boulder Police and ACSO do not have the manpower to enforce those laws when there are 10k+ people doing it in one place at the same time. Also, it does not take place in a public park, it takes place ON campus. Check your facts. Believe it or not, protesting our arbitrary drug laws IS a noble cause. Our drug laws are a big part of the reason we are a faltering empire.
@AJS0121 The constitution does not say we have the right to protest ONLY if we obtain a permit to do so. That is the stupidest shit I have ever heard. Sure, If you don't want riot police to show up, by all means get a permit. But the people that stage true protests, like the one in this video at the DNC convention, do not need to get a permit and usually never do. That does not mean it's not a lawful protest, it only means that storm troopers will show up and show off the US police state.
there are NO laws requiring you to carry an ID wherever you go at this time in the US. If you operate a motor vehicle on the public right of way, the model traffic code and most local traffic laws require you to carry your driver's license. Cops ask for ID during all contacts because it is better than taking someones word. Having proper ID may save you a trip to the booking counter for fingerprints.
@AJS0121 If you are suspected of a crime, you MUST provide ID to the officer. If you do not, you can be detained, they can search you and your vehicle, and if you are doing things you shouldn't be, they can arrest you. But you must be suspected of a crime, even a petty traffic offense. Cops ask for drivers license because you can't drive without it, even if you have one at home. It is not because "it's better than taking someones word." The two laws are different though.
@trapstar918420: Close but no cigar. If you are suspected of a crime, you are, at a minimum, already detained. Since you sound like you are in Colorado I'll keep it local. If you are suspected of vilating criminal code under title 18, you must identify youself to an officer. There is no requirement to show any ID because there is no law requiring private citizens to carry ID. However, if the officer believes you may not be telling the truth about your identity, and you cannot show ID...
@AJS0121 You think you are making a point, but you are actually just supporting my argument, stupid ass. How do you suppose you ID yourself to an officer without an actually ID? No officer just takes a name down and says "OK, I trust you." Laws don't require you to carry ID unless you are driving, in which case you need a DL. If you are suspected of a crime and can't show ID, you won't just be detained, you'll be arrested.
There's more garbage spewing here than I can respond to.
Driving as a right is sovereign citizen B.S. Taxes pay for roads and S.C.'s don't want to pay taxes so they takle a snippet from old common law an distort it.
Traffic courts don't need standing, they are not private citizens. They need jurisdiction. There is a difference and the laws we agreed upon give them that jurisdiction.
I dont see anything about law enforcement's right to secret policing... can you cite a law that says they DONT have to ID themselves when dressed in riot gear?
The only laws in my state regarding the requirement for citizen's to carry ID relates to operating a motor vehicle on a public right of way. That is a priveledge and the motorist must by law, carry thier state issued driver's license.
Does your state have a written law stating something different? My guess is there isn't one because it would be the first.
there are legal opinions that claim driving to be a right, as is free and unrestricted travel on the public way. Unless of course, you are conducting commerce. You wouldn't consider a citizen traveling in a private car to be conducting commerce would you? really? the standing argument? From what I saw in the video, there peaceful assemblies going on in which the videographer was involved. You're making is seem like they walked up to random officers for no reason. That wasnt the case
funny you mention standing. do traffic courts have "standing" over a situation where there is no real harm, claimant, or plaintiff?
I agree, that there is no written law regarding the ID thing, but it is implied because of the rule of law. There are laws that say you HAVE to carry ID with you EVERYWHERE you go... its post 911 remember? If i had a nickel for everytime a cop said that to me, I would have a bunch of nickels. So, If I have to show it upon demand, then so should they.
but then again, in both situations, context is important. Does an officer have the right to approach you, detain you, and demand ID without telling you why? No, SCOTUS did say so in the terry decision. It depends on circumstance. If you know that you are in a situation that does not warrant brandishing your ID then you don't have to, but the officer has police powers on his/her side. their post 911 paranoia is justified these days and you will be taken in.
In those matters, CopWatch videographer lack what is called standing. They have no personal claim against the official that the party they are dealing with may.
And so while I agree if someone has contact with the police in a matter of official busness, they have standing and can request ID, just buggin cops is wrong. It's antagonistic and as inflamatory as the CopWatch logo.
Still, nobody has cited the law that many claim exist about officers having to id themselves.
where is the law stating that the cops have a right to police a peaceful 1st amendment protest? They have no duty to protect, SCOTUS ruled on that already and said so. So why are they there? and why are they undercover??
Terry V. Ohio is only about stop and frisks, not Officer ID. It laid the foundation for the area between consentual contact and arrest that we now recognize as being "detained". I'm not saying I disagree with L.E. having to ID themselves if you are in contact with them as a course of teh discharge of thier lawful duties, but just walking up to officers and bugging them for thier ID when you are not involved is just harassment.
This is some baaaad misinformation! Heres all the Colorado law, where is the ID requirement this video speaks of?
Police are NOT required by Colorado laaw to give business cards to anyone who asks. Most Colorado agency's have POLICY that requires they give a card with a holtine number for complaints to motorists that they stop and do not ticket.
Copwatch is a joke. period. Look at the logo. It reaks of pre-convieved notions and bias.
the requirement is implicit within certain amendments to our constitution. they are called the bill of rights... ever heard of em?
i think the 5th heavily at play here.
and also think about liability.
the punishment for impersonating any officer of the law is very steep. Therefore, wouldn't you think there is some federal requirement for ID verification? AND, how about the rule of law? ever heard of that? if a law says a citizen must have ID, then SO DO THE POLICE!!!!
@xcentricnews Just saw the 5th ammendment thing... even farther off of base than the Terry V. Ohio comment. The fifth only applys to grand jury, double jepordy, self incrimination, due process, and taking clauses.
You keep asking what I think but that dosen't really matter. Coulda, shoulda, woulda. The reason you cannot cite your source is because it doesn't exist. I'm not saying agree with the way things are, but just wanting something to be does not make it so my friend.
here's the thing AJ i think most people forget when discussing this topic.
a simple search of the terms on google brings up much information about the issue, and In my opinion the logic surrounding questions about both police and citizens identifying themselves goes back to the SCOTUS case terryvohio, about stops and frisks.
from what i can tell, the general answer to whether or not we have to show ID when asked by the police is: it depends upon the situation.
so, the answer to whether or not police have to identify themselves is the same: it depends upon the situation.
if there is an emergency, and you can clearly see why law enforcement is there, then no, you dont have the right to demand ID from them. It would be obvious because they would be doing their job. However, if you are at a peaceful gathering or demonstration and some guys in black pajamas show up with no badges, you have EVERY to know who they are. this isnt naziland
depending upon the political climate of the time within which you served-i doubt that is the entire truth. i have friends in the military... and i specifically remember one telling me outright, that he believes he is fighting for free speech, and i thought that was commendable. but you... you see a video about how citizens want more oversight on police powers, and label it as "harassing" ??
@ordee76 that's just not right. the reason I may sound like a tape on repeat is because you keep missing the point. the highest form of patriotism is right next to serving in the military, or at least used to be, and that is political dissidence.
Especially during a time when the government set up civil institutions, like most run by "homeland security" (ex. FUSION centers), that neither the people nor federal govt itself oversee.
good, because i doubt you had anything to say that would be substantial and coherent, other than spitting out pejorative comments and generalized characterizations. Just like this post of yours:
"Copwatch: do us a favor; put the camera and the joint down and get a life."
hence my sarcastic rebuttal about your SS uniform.
But, if youre not a nazi, then your a fascist. A shill is a shill.
@xcentricnews I'm not bunching all of you as stoners but most you guys act like that you are. Actually if someone is considered facist, they're considered left-wing. I'm not a left-winger. A Libertarian.
@ordee76 ok... but youre still a shill. and I havent smoked a joint in a while hahaha. "most of you guys"... who do you think you're talking about here? the only one that should be labeled under the general "you ppl" is YOU. YOU ppl who believe police powers instead of civil governance should rule society. YOU ppl who believe that terrorism exists autonomously from the web of politics we have woven our damn selves. YOU ppl who woud support abuses of power. YOU ppl, who are fascists.
@xcentricnews dude, you're just a leftist radical who just wants to start trouble. Not all cops, business owners, or politicans are bad. if a cop harasses me I'll file a complaint on that individual. You're just lumping all of them in one group saying they're evil and should lose their jobs. And I can't believe I put my life on the line by serving in the military for ppl like you. All you can call me a shill and fascist because I don't support your idea to start trouble by harassing cops
actually i have no political affiliation. and im not against ALL cops, neither is copwatch.
and you didnt fight for ppl like me you jerk, you went to war for politicians and industries. the people who stayed here, protested for civil liberties, and raised awareness about certain issues, fought for me. YOU fought for imperialism. Unless of course you were a member of some elite black ops group that got rid of some crazy murderous despot somewhere, then kudos. but it wasnt for me.
@xcentricnews whatever, oh yea, I'm a chick not a guy. Fuck it, I'm done because you starting to sound like a tape on replay. I still believe I have fought for the ppl of this country. Screw the politicians I really don't much about them.
FIle a complaint ? are you serious? they are mostly beyond reproach, like i said, they protect their own. unless you have them on tape committing some egregious form of brutality, nothing happens. and even then they are given impunity. Peace officers who understand the job are awesome, corporate monkey cowboys with guns are another story altogether . and no one said to harass cops. just you saying THAT makes you a shill. trying to label dissidents as domestic terrorists?
"dude, you're just a leftist radical who just wants to start trouble."
are you a member of the thought police?
i believe in civil disobedience, peaceful kinda stuff. and from what i can see in this video, all copwatch was doing was asking questions. so where did i condone "harassing police" or starting trouble? you are a provocateur. actually you know what? i'm dropping the shill remark, youre a provocateur, yea thats it. is it your job to oust political dissidents??
@commonsenseisgone1 How so? I'm not associated with them, but as far as I can see, they act peacefully and legally. What's the problem?
I'm all in favor of a well-organized, well-funded, well-equipped police force. But it will always be a fact that cops posses the means to physically control the people. And for that reason, it's more than appropriate that police should be expected to endure greater scrutiny, accountability and transparency than... say... accountants and dentists.
I have to admit, this is probably the only video by cop watch that was respectful, and worth watching. If you respect the officers viewers respect you, you can't categorize all cops as corrupt.
besides, even though they're breaking the law, who can we get to arrest them? if you think you can citizen arrest and detain them you're wrong, there's laws against detaining someone when you're not a peace officer.
they're well aware that we can't hold them accountable/arrest for their offenses so they break laws as they see fit to be our overlords and serve their hidden masters without conscience or free thought.
1:45 I actually don't think there is a law that requires officers to give you their badge number. You should have quoted the code that requires it to solidify your argument but you didn't, probably because there isn't one. So unless you can point me to the code or law that requires police officers to provide their badge numbers I'm gonna have to ask you to stop saying they have to when they don't.
@kilroy227 They do have to give you their badge number or their name which ever they choose. They are public servants that are employed by the state, thus they work for you and I. That's how you file a complaint with the district attorney's office regarding them. Although say the officer is "undercover" then it's a little more tricky. You prolly are gonna have to go to the courthouse and speak to a judge.
to everybody who says that police is the answer well when you need something called POLICE WATCH in a country. that alone says allot. oh i allmost forgot it
You people need to take a step back and stop impeding the work of the police. Who gives a flying fuck what their badge number is, when they tell you to do something, you do it. Don't be such douchebags and find a real hobby like wiping the weed residue out of your bongs you fucking hippies. It's people like you, not the actual police, that give police a bad name. You don't realize that in the instance of the DNC these officers were trying to protect you and everyone else, but you don't care.
It's obvious that the police are the common enemy of the people we all should demand that the police protect the constitution of the United State if they violate our rights they should go to prison The constitution more important than the rich people that they protect, they do not protect the average citizen The only thing that police give the average citizen is a traffic ticket that backdoor 4 the powerful people wife and I taking out our motor home and beaten jailed police will hurt you.
Fuck CopWatch who the fuck cares if they dont give u a badge # why the hell do u need it anyway! U guys should be called Bacon watch! U can obiviously tell this are police officers be glad they arnt looking for u guys and lumping up u douche bags with noting to do!
i would dare say millions of americans care for the idea of copwatch, after all it is built the notion that the public has rights when stopped by police, and that we have the right to bare witness to how police interact with the public. how is that so horrible may i ask?
@McSeedz But it is okay for them to ask us for an ID and we HAVE to show it? What if we do not feel like being hassled by them? You may be comfortable having your rights revoked voluntarily, but these are the people making sure that does not happen. Sadly it is a losing battle because of ignorant sheep like you.
put your SS uniform away, and learn what it means to be a real american.
it has nothing to do with watching american idol, stuffing your face with mcdonalds, voting for crony politicians, "paying your bills" and high priced credit card debts, shopping on black friday like some hedonistic pagan, OR being a shill for the police state.
@xcentricnews first of all I don't a SS uniform-I have friends (alot) who are Jewish, I hate "American Idol", I don't own a credit card because I cut mine all up, I'm a Christian, I don't eat at McDonald's because it's cheap crap, I don't vote because all politiicans are cronies, and I refuse to be a sheep being led to slaughter. But, I have a family and life than go harass others. Oh yea, I've rather believe what Glenn Beck says than what you say. Yes, I have woken up.
about the SS uniform... i was making an assumption, just like you did about "putting down the bong". Almost as if you think that all political dissidents, and conscientious objectors are stoners and "hippies" (whatever that means these days)
"believe what I write"?
I didnt write anything of substance, and was just calling you out as a shill.
interested in an intelligent discussion regarding the legal merits of this police state thing?
@xcentricnews I wasn't being sarcastic about Glenn Beck-he might not like something but he doesn't go harass others like what you ppl are doing. Actually, the Patriot Act was thought up by then Sen now VP Joe Biden in 1995 and then Pres. Bush put it into action in 2001. Yes, I have looked it up. Google. I think Bush earned his money. I'm done and rather do something important than argue w/ ppl like you. Good day.
@xcentricnews Oh yea, I've forgot to say this-I think you might call me a "Repubictard", I am neither a Republican, Democrat, Liberal, or Conservative. A Libertartian. Any Republican or Democrat can be a leftist or right-wing. I'm betting you have voted for Obama in "08-how's that working for ya? He's the one who's trying to turn this country into a POLICE STATE!.
@HiJoDeBoRiNqUeN Nothing, he has a job to do like securing an area, they don't have time for stupid bullshit like that, a riot is a very tense situation and one little thing happens and the whole thing explodes, check your fucking facts you bigmouthed asshole
Blackwater Security firm hired by the gov. to assist police in times of social unrest, don't have to produce identification. They are private contractors. You saw a lot of them in New Orleans after Katrina.
that would probably not be legal for the govt to do that.
we have a national guard and an army for a reason... o, nevermind, i forgot, the army is fighting a political war for money power and bush's sensitivities.
Please cite for me what court has told you that a law enforcement officer MUST wear their badge or name plate while on riot duty wearing protective gear.....Please, please for the sake of discussion tell us all what court, in this country, you are citing??????????????????
Steve Nash, give us all a break. Its one thing to claim that your are intending to get Law Enforcement as a whole to be more accountable, but in reality after working the DNC, Cop Watch supported and did NOT act indenpent of groups like "Recreate 68" and others who were setting out not only protest, but much of what turned out to be credible intelligence showed they intended to violate the laws by means of vandalism, violent acts agains the Police
where is the link between needing police and monitoring them? they are two seperate things, and you are trying to link them to make a cheap political point. for shame.
first of all...I dont know who you all think you are....there is not stating that an officer even has to have a metal badge on his person...as lond as you can I identify them as police...second, there are a lot of cities that make badges without badge numbers...third dont u people have better stuff 2 do....I hope you all get arrested for disorderly conduct and throw under the jail...your all peices of trash
Look into the their faces. They are our brothers, sisters, fathers, and mothers. They run toward the gunfire when all others run away. Most have a college education that could earn much more pay, but they do what they love and we should respect them for it. You say their body armor obscured some of their names. Remember the "body armor" part. Do you have to wear that when you go to work? So what, some would not give you the time of day. Call 911 and who comes running to your aid.
what state local or county law requires a cop to give a name or number?? it's more of a policy than law...now if your arrested, detained or summoned(traffic ticket) that is a law to give a name or number. Dont believe the tree hugging, no job, anti social cop watchers.
Hey do you live in Denver and if you do I bet your White cause we always get pulled over and asked for a I.D. then they let us go or like how my uncle was beaten by Disctrict 4 and left in the alley but luckly there was a eye wittness so shut your mouth when you dont know
Good video, however it would be great if your group cited your sources about where it says in federal and state law that an officer must identified his badge number if asked.
For most law enforcement agencies, a cop is only suppose to give his badge number if doing so would not interfere with his primary duties.
Furthermore I dispute the fact that officers can not cover their badges... a long standing tradition of all law enforcement is to cover badges in the days following an officer's death.
So what ever came of all those cops violating the law? As usual, probably not a fucking thing because the cops and people with money do whatever they want. The rules are only for regular people I guess. I wish regular people would start shooting cops.
what is the solution when they dont provide their numbers? then we are just recording some guy in a uniform. for example, what happened with that video of the police officer not having a badge?
i guess if you are not interested in having freedom, dont mind having police arrest you or possibly hurt you without any repercussions then yeah i could see how you might feel that way, but know that you are just speaking for yourself. most people find this very very important
cops are the lowest form of criminals

Police don't NEED a right to secret policing. The laws that govern thier authority allow for it and so they do it. Why not? The supreme court said that law enforcement may engage in deception. period. you think a meth dealer is going to do a hand to hand sale with a narcotics officer in full uniform? Really??? Putting U.C.'s in crowds is great for gathering intel and I'm glad they do it. What's wrong with it?
AJS0121 1 year ago
Cops at protests, protect protesters as much as police them. protestors commonly violate laws regarding obstructing right of ways (and about a dozen others). Cops cannot turn a blind eye to that because the other taxpayers who are not breaking the law expect them to take action. Here in Denver, many groups that I would call hate groups like neo-nazi's and the KKK get permits to ralley at the capital, and the cops police them while protecting them and thier 1st ammendment rights.
AJS0121 1 year ago
@AJS0121
You don't need a permit to protest.
trapstar918420 1 year ago
@trapstar918420 : Actually, you usually do. Unless you plan to keep you group small enough to not block any public right of way. Protests by permit holders get the best spots. You can get permits for high visibility spots like the capitals steps.
Anybody else confused about anything? Need some clarification?
AJS0121 1 year ago
@AJS0121
The million man march was NOT like the KKK asking to march on the capitol.
trapstar918420 1 year ago
@trapstar918420: Fail! The million Man March (Which was actually about 400K people) did have a permit. They set up stands and a stage and it took place on the Washington mall. Not a whole lot to interfere with there. The rally set up by Glenn Beck on 8/28, permit. The permit for the 1995 "Million Man March"... was issued for one million attendees.
AJS0121 1 year ago
@AJS0121 Ok stupid ass, you completely missed my point. Try to arrest 400k people for not having a permit to protest. I will admit I am wrong when I see tens of thousands of people rounded up and arrested. For example, every year in Boulder, CO on April 20th, around 10k people gather on the CU campus to smoke marijuana. They are ALL breaking federal, state, and local laws by smoking in public. NONE of them are ever arrested. NONE of them ever have a stupid permit.
trapstar918420 11 months ago
@trapstar918420 : I'm familliar with the smoke out. The chief of police chooses not to take enforcement action however, it takes place in a park. There is no obstruction of public right of ways. These people are commiting a class 2 petty offense, the lowest crime on the books in Colorado. So it is what it is. And what noble cause are all those stoners trying to support by exercising thier right to peaceably assemble?
AJS0121 11 months ago
@AJS0121: ...The officer may chose a custodial arrest to get your photo a fingerprints back at the station whereas if you had state issued photo id, he may have just given you a ticket on the street. If you are stopped for a traffic violation on a public right of way, you must present your drivers license because title 42 requires drivers to carry thier license on thier person when operating a motor vehicle in the public right of way. That is the only situation you MUST provide id.
AJS0121 11 months ago
@AJS0121 The chief of police may say he "chooses" not to act, but everyone knows he has absolutely no choice in the matter. The Boulder Police and ACSO do not have the manpower to enforce those laws when there are 10k+ people doing it in one place at the same time. Also, it does not take place in a public park, it takes place ON campus. Check your facts. Believe it or not, protesting our arbitrary drug laws IS a noble cause. Our drug laws are a big part of the reason we are a faltering empire.
trapstar918420 11 months ago
@AJS0121 The constitution does not say we have the right to protest ONLY if we obtain a permit to do so. That is the stupidest shit I have ever heard. Sure, If you don't want riot police to show up, by all means get a permit. But the people that stage true protests, like the one in this video at the DNC convention, do not need to get a permit and usually never do. That does not mean it's not a lawful protest, it only means that storm troopers will show up and show off the US police state.
trapstar918420 11 months ago
there are NO laws requiring you to carry an ID wherever you go at this time in the US. If you operate a motor vehicle on the public right of way, the model traffic code and most local traffic laws require you to carry your driver's license. Cops ask for ID during all contacts because it is better than taking someones word. Having proper ID may save you a trip to the booking counter for fingerprints.
AJS0121 1 year ago
@AJS0121 If you are suspected of a crime, you MUST provide ID to the officer. If you do not, you can be detained, they can search you and your vehicle, and if you are doing things you shouldn't be, they can arrest you. But you must be suspected of a crime, even a petty traffic offense. Cops ask for drivers license because you can't drive without it, even if you have one at home. It is not because "it's better than taking someones word." The two laws are different though.
trapstar918420 11 months ago
@trapstar918420: Close but no cigar. If you are suspected of a crime, you are, at a minimum, already detained. Since you sound like you are in Colorado I'll keep it local. If you are suspected of vilating criminal code under title 18, you must identify youself to an officer. There is no requirement to show any ID because there is no law requiring private citizens to carry ID. However, if the officer believes you may not be telling the truth about your identity, and you cannot show ID...
AJS0121 11 months ago
@AJS0121 You think you are making a point, but you are actually just supporting my argument, stupid ass. How do you suppose you ID yourself to an officer without an actually ID? No officer just takes a name down and says "OK, I trust you." Laws don't require you to carry ID unless you are driving, in which case you need a DL. If you are suspected of a crime and can't show ID, you won't just be detained, you'll be arrested.
trapstar918420 11 months ago
There's more garbage spewing here than I can respond to.
Driving as a right is sovereign citizen B.S. Taxes pay for roads and S.C.'s don't want to pay taxes so they takle a snippet from old common law an distort it.
Traffic courts don't need standing, they are not private citizens. They need jurisdiction. There is a difference and the laws we agreed upon give them that jurisdiction.
AJS0121 1 year ago
I dont see anything about law enforcement's right to secret policing... can you cite a law that says they DONT have to ID themselves when dressed in riot gear?
xcentricnews 1 year ago
The only laws in my state regarding the requirement for citizen's to carry ID relates to operating a motor vehicle on a public right of way. That is a priveledge and the motorist must by law, carry thier state issued driver's license.
Does your state have a written law stating something different? My guess is there isn't one because it would be the first.
AJS0121 1 year ago
@AJS0121
there are legal opinions that claim driving to be a right, as is free and unrestricted travel on the public way. That wasnt the case
xcentricnews 1 year ago
@AJS0121
funny you mention standing. do traffic courts have "standing" over a situation where there is no real harm, claimant, or plaintiff?
I agree, that there is no written law regarding the ID thing, but it is implied because of the rule of law. There are laws that say you HAVE to carry ID with you EVERYWHERE you go... its post 911 remember? If i had a nickel for everytime a cop said that to me, I would have a bunch of nickels. So, If I have to show it upon demand, then so should they.
xcentricnews 1 year ago
@AJS0121
but then again, in both situations, context is important. Does an officer have the right to approach you, detain you, and demand ID without telling you why? No, SCOTUS did say so in the terry decision. It depends on circumstance. If you know that you are in a situation that does not warrant brandishing your ID then you don't have to, but the officer has police powers on his/her side. their post 911 paranoia is justified these days and you will be taken in.
xcentricnews 1 year ago
In those matters, CopWatch videographer lack what is called standing. They have no personal claim against the official that the party they are dealing with may.
And so while I agree if someone has contact with the police in a matter of official busness, they have standing and can request ID, just buggin cops is wrong. It's antagonistic and as inflamatory as the CopWatch logo.
Still, nobody has cited the law that many claim exist about officers having to id themselves.
AJS0121 1 year ago
@AJS0121
where is the law stating that the cops have a right to police a peaceful 1st amendment protest? They have no duty to protect, SCOTUS ruled on that already and said so. So why are they there? and why are they undercover??
xcentricnews 1 year ago
AJS0121 1 year ago
This is some baaaad misinformation! Heres all the Colorado law, where is the ID requirement this video speaks of?
Police are NOT required by Colorado laaw to give business cards to anyone who asks. Most Colorado agency's have POLICY that requires they give a card with a holtine number for complaints to motorists that they stop and do not ticket.
Copwatch is a joke. period. Look at the logo. It reaks of pre-convieved notions and bias.
AJS0121 1 year ago
@AJS0121
the requirement is implicit within certain amendments to our constitution. they are called the bill of rights... ever heard of em?
i think the 5th heavily at play here.
and also think about liability.
the punishment for impersonating any officer of the law is very steep. Therefore, wouldn't you think there is some federal requirement for ID verification? AND, how about the rule of law? ever heard of that? if a law says a citizen must have ID, then SO DO THE POLICE!!!!
SHILL!
xcentricnews 1 year ago
@xcentricnews Just saw the 5th ammendment thing... even farther off of base than the Terry V. Ohio comment. The fifth only applys to grand jury, double jepordy, self incrimination, due process, and taking clauses.
You keep asking what I think but that dosen't really matter. Coulda, shoulda, woulda. The reason you cannot cite your source is because it doesn't exist. I'm not saying agree with the way things are, but just wanting something to be does not make it so my friend.
AJS0121 1 year ago
@AJS0121
here's the thing AJ i think most people forget when discussing this topic.
a simple search of the terms on google brings up much information about the issue, and In my opinion the logic surrounding questions about both police and citizens identifying themselves goes back to the SCOTUS case terryvohio, about stops and frisks.
from what i can tell, the general answer to whether or not we have to show ID when asked by the police is: it depends upon the situation.
xcentricnews 1 year ago
@xcentricnews
so, the answer to whether or not police have to identify themselves is the same: it depends upon the situation.
if there is an emergency, and you can clearly see why law enforcement is there, then no, you dont have the right to demand ID from them. It would be obvious because they would be doing their job. However, if you are at a peaceful gathering or demonstration and some guys in black pajamas show up with no badges, you have EVERY to know who they are. this isnt naziland

@kilroy227 They do have to give you their badge number or their name which ever they choose. They are public servants that are employed by the state, thus they work for you and I. That's how you file a complaint with the district attorney's office regarding them. Although say the officer is "undercover" then it's a little more tricky. Hmm, are you under the impression that laws are made by the judicial branch of government?
jbnumba1 2 years ago
@jbnumba1, It's not the making of the law, rather the interpretation of the law and most people apply this to their convenience.

I think it's time to get a job. Be apart of society.
One day you will need police...I hope you think different then...
Fuck COPWATCH

where is the link between needing police and monitoring them? they are two seperate things, and you are trying to link them to make a cheap political point. for shame.

Don't get yourself worked up!! These idiots just hate Rules and they have no respect for authority!!!
dmoosavi78 2 years ago
So that's why they are asking those with authority to respect the (rules) laws?

Look into the their faces. They are our brothers, sisters, fathers, and mothers. They run toward the gunfire when all others run away. Most have a college education that could earn much more pay, but they do what they love and we should respect them for it. You say their body armor obscured some of their names. Remember the "body armor" part. Do you have to wear that when you go to work? So what, some would not give you the time of day. Call 911 and who comes running to your aid.

CAPCadet1579 2 years ago
self hating is very common amongst law enforcement,
my advice, some therapy, some personal reflections and then go tackle what you hate about yourself and law enforcement.

what state local or county law requires a cop to give a name or number?? it's more of a policy than law...now if your arrested, detained or summoned(traffic ticket) that is a law to give a name or number. Dont believe the tree hugging, no job, anti social cop watchers.

BakaGaijin76 3 years ago
what is the solution when they dont provide their numbers? then we are just recording some guy in a uniform. for example, what happened with that video of the police officer not having a badge?

i guess if you are not interested in having freedom, dont mind having police arrest you or possibly hurt you without any repercussions then yeah i could see how you might feel that way, but know that you are just speaking for yourself. most people find this very very important
