Were the lyrics so obvious REM wanted an ambiguous video to distract from the words? Hmmmm.

Probably both.

I'm a female and don't mind looking at the occasional penis, but 40 times in a video is a bit much.

I think REM started going downhill with Stipe's remarks about The Beatles - "Those guys didn't mean a fucking thing to me." You'll notice in interviews after, he tries back-peddling, but the deed was done.

AMAZING new track from a much better album than they've managed to produce in the last 10 years - but the video is entirely inappropriate IMO. Don't mind the content at all - its the images just don't match the song. Such a pity this album isn't being toured - live scenes from this song being done would have been awesome.

At nearly two decades R.E.M. contributed a diverse range of videos that stood less as a visual translation of the letters wanted to express in his poetry and more like an independent body of songs. But the deficiency of quality that is seen in this recent video shows how this language has become tired. Maybe if the band abdicate their supposed artistic ideals are releasing a little of all this mannerism and decided to adopt something more polished videos would not have generated so bad.

This is definitely a great video! It reminds me a lot to the "low" video way back in 1991. Very bizarre. R.E.M. is trying to capture that mood on some of this videos I mean, from the "out of time" era.

@nueve08 Yeah, James Herbert directed "Low" and several others for them.  If you grab up any of REM's early video collections on VHS (Succumbs, Parellel, etc.), his name comes up time and again. Glad to see he's still kickin' around!

Visually it's a great video.... and there is nothing bad about naked bodies.....human body is a sculpure itself ... formed from beautiful shapes..... each individually created...... but..hmm... I come from Europe....... and I am sick of mainstream hollywood productions....

If you "cut" this movie to frames... each can be a seperate painting....

sometimes being creative is fulfilling a need by the creator and most of the time it's "to hell" with those who don't get it. Sometimes art isn't suppose to be "gotten"

afterthought -- the album is DEFINITELY worth a purchase - - the videos? well, THIS is what happens when creative art hippies turn 50 or so. As fans , we just have to acknowledge this "art" for what it is whether we like or hate it. Doesn't take away from the great music. Videos don't ALWAYS have to have a message or be funny or a social commentary.

Good concept for the video with the DVD scrubbing. Sort of a meta-video. But bad, bad, bad choice of subject matter. Naked people with no context?? Should have set the band as the subject. Could have been perfect.
