  • NO, RONNIE PETERSON IS NOT FORGOTTEN! LIKE THIS COMMENT IF YOU AGREE.

  • You have to give credit for James Hunt and Patrick Depailler for helping Ronnie out of the burning wreck. That's something I call real sportsmanship! No question about it! I don't care who was to blame or not, since accidents happen in racing. Especially when you are racing on this lever, constantly living on the edge and pushing the limits. Back in '78 safety regulations were better than in '73 or '66... but poor compared to today's safety in Formula 1. These men gave their lives to save many!

  • I've seen this movie in theatre back in early 80s, It would be nice if someone has it on dvd and manages to upload it.

  • Incredible footage, thanks for posting this.

  • crashing at the start of a race is just stuuuuupid

  • Love the soundtrack!!

  • What makes me "long-nosed" is that Ronnie didn't die in the crash but after a surgery to save his legs..... He didn't even get to die where he loved to be, on the track.

    R.I.P Ronnie Peterson

  • Yeah, it's unbelievable, how racers really risked their lives in those days, while now driving with a wheel or with a computer is almost the same...

  • How ironic, they went to San Marino instead, the track that claimed the life of the sport's greatest driver in history.

  • @godanselmo Actually, that is debatable. Ayrton was a hero and an icon to me when I was a child. However, do not forget Jim Clark. Maybe you should do a good deal of research on him. I believe together, they both are the greatest drivers in Formula One history.

  • hello,i have a question about this part of the movie? this part is a is a movie witch is made in the 80's and i am looking for that video and was in the biosscope with the music santa maria from ....

  • @BoKoning I have on DVD, but i didnt upload on the YouTube, or any other site on the web m8. Dont know how much size the video have. Also, dont know about the rights. The quality is poor, as we can see back in those days, so as the sound. If i manage to upload, i ll share the link. Thank you for the tip in the soundtrack. Also, cant remember the name of the man who does this documentary.

  • @MelinhoDarkspear But the things i ask about the movie is correct? I dont want to know about the name of the man who talks hehe. The movie is during around one hour i remember...

  • too sad for an 8 year old.. like me

  • RIP Ronnie Peterson

On a happier note, Ecclestone hasn't changed his hairstyle, his glasses, or, I believe, his shirt, for the past 32 years...

  • Lol, that one guy dives behind the fence after he stops.. :/

  • Why do they still race at monza?

  • ronnie and reggie his brother were gangsters in the London east end in the 60s. Ronnie moved into Formula one after his brother Reg bought him a go kart for xmas one year.

  • R.I.P.

  • Come to think of it the tractor scene might have happened on the second warmup for the restart....after the accident, because Hunt was agitated and there was a lot of confusion about what was going on. Maybe the drivers would not agree to race. The crowd was boisterous because we didn't understand the severity of the accident at all.

  • It was funny because the old tractor was going like 20 mph on the track. Then Hunt and somebody else came up to approve the repairs. The race went on after that. We had no idea Peterson was severely injured and the talk was all about the Italian driver even after the race. At the end we could walk along the old track on the high bank as seen in the film Grand Prix, then we walked up to the start to see the accident scene. I still remember vividly the tire marks from the braking. RIP Ronnie

  • I was at the race in stands around a few more corners. In those days there was not much security and I was able to mingle with the crews and drivers, including Peterson. I remember him well, though I did not speak to him. Then during warmup there was a crash in front of me and the race was delayed while there was a wait to fix the guard rail. It took a long time for anything to happen and finally an old tractor came around the bend on the track to pull the rail straight. The crowd cheered.

  • An accident always has many causes. Patrese was the man everyone blames, but IMO the true reason is the Celebrity that started the race. He already pressed 'green' when only the first 2 rows were standing still, after the formation lap. So the whole pack of cars merged into each other like a harmonica. The track of Monza divided after a few 100 meters into the racetrack and the oval track. So there were too many cars on too little space, which caused the accident. Superswede RIP.

  • @Muldaaaa Couldn't agree more, but you think it's just a complete conspiracy regarding the "ignorance" of the surgical team that operated on Ronnie? All the text-book things they completely ignored? I don't know why I am asking you, you seemed reasonable with your last comment I'd like to hear your words on that.

  • @Muldaaaa - Totally agree with you here. The person responsible for giving the Green Light did not do his job properly.

  • @Muldaaaa spot on

  • @Muldaaaa It's pretty much inarguable that Patrese did not cause the crash, and that James Hunt was a total asshole.

  • what's the name of this documentary????

  • R.I.P ronnie is the besst

  • Not a bone frag, fat from the bone marrow got in the blood. That's bad. There is an episode of MASH that talks about this. Can happen when a long bone in the leg is broken bad.

  • @Zoomer30 I read this shit book saying RP had lung damage from smoke and heat . I hope that book was banned !

  • I was there with my father I was very young it was my 1Grandprix I had 13 years old !! I'm remember it very clearly !!!!

  • i want to buy this video, called "poleposition". can anybody tell me where i can buy this?

  • RIP

  • Thats incredible, how the explosion of Peterson's gas tank just sounds like a bomb

  • 1970's F1: A mistake.

  • R.I.P Ronnie - A Racer & A Gentleman...

  • Will Ronnie Peterson be forgotten? NO WAY! He was denied the chance to really challenge Andretti for the 1978 championship through the dreaded team orders, and would have been champion in 1979 with McLaren. A truly great sportsman. The musical tribute from 8:40 onwards is beautiful. Ronnie lives forever!

  • @danshah88 thanx for the info, it didnt make sense to me how one could die from just a broken leg, very unlucky indeed.

  • James Hunt blamed Riccardo Patrese for the crash when in reality Hunt caused it.....

  • @bobbya16 all the drivers blamed patrese!

  • @flipsidedogchop ..all i can say is watch it in slow motion and tell me how patrese was caused it....

  • @bobbya16 dont worry i have watched in many times and as everyone knows its inconclusive.... but to accuse hunt of fabricating storys to cover up his own guilt despite everyone else saying the same as hunt.....is very ignorant!

  • @bobbya16 Yeah Hunt never said how much he was involved - only how he tried to help RP . I wonder how he really felt about the accident .

  • THE LAST INTERVIEWED was Elio De Angelis...not Vittorio Brambilla...

  • Last one interviewed is probably Vittorio Brambilla.

Anyways ihave read peterson died for toxic inalations related with the explosion and not for the accident itself.

  • Dr. Wilkens is obviously too important to rush about, which is apparently why Regazonni is PO'd. I don't blame him. Looks like the doc is taking a Sunday stroll. Check out how that cop with the dog @ 7:05 goes all hard core on him. Boy, those Italians were really into the whole authoritarian trip.

  • Dr. Wilkens is obviously too important to rush about, which is apparently why Regazonni is PO'd. I don't blame him. Looks like the doc is taking a Sunday stroll.

  • i may have miissed something, if he had only a broken leg. how did he come to pass?

  • @janmadytay fat from the bone marrow got into his bloodstream and he died of a fat embolism....very unlucky

  • Rip Ronnie and Rip Elio

  • Ronnie Petersson was living in my hometown, they have a museum here in Orebro for him

  • 不忍心再看下去,太痛苦。英雄走好。

  • i love the early 80s montage with added music and sound effects. from what documentary is this vid? i would like to see it all.

  • Seems like all F1 cars knew how to do well back then was crash and blow up.

  • who is the lasdt man interviewed? on 8:23 - 08:39

  • @PinkyPunkFish

    He was Elio De Angelis

  • :O, is weird but fantastic see the old formula 1, i would like to be in that age... viva ronnie (Y)

    34 years old

  • Is it Alonso at 4:25???

  • @tjamenovic NO !!!

  • Vi ricordate che accusarono Patrese di essere stato la causa di quest'incidente?

  • @MySilver79 si, e la causa è andati avanti per anni.

  • Vila i frid, Ronnie.

  • Pettersson was not American, he was swedish

  • Italian doctors are fail.

  • Colin Chapman said he told Ronnie Peterson to hold back in a race so Mario Andretti could win the race and this the world F1 championship. From the Chapman hoped to sell more Lotus cars in America. Peterson is generally considered the fastest of that era, and certainly the fastest American. Andretti was very good but certainly overrated in America.

  • @PatwMartin He was Swedish.

  • 0:20 look at the tyre

  • he lives in our hearts forever

    RIP

  • He didn't die in the accident, thus it was not fatal accident. What killed him was a bone fragment which ended up going to his heart later that night. Before that, he was pretty well and ready to race in a few months.

  • @saulocpp No, he died of Fat embolism, and he was not "pretty well" after that crash.

  • 0:50-1:39 What song is that? Sounds like clapton.

  • @hirvi93 The song in the end of the clip is called "Santa Maria" [by Oliver Onions] and it is a very special instrumental version [piano]. The original Track is not that kind of sad! I was not able to locate that instrumental-version on any record. In anyway it gives the song a complete new meaning of style.

  • Comment removed

  • @AndrewMacdonald1970

    I completely agree with you!

  • anybody knows the name of the first song?

    R.I.P. ronnie

  • Not sure what you mean as first, the main song is Santa Maria

  • what movie or documentary is this called? I want to see more

  • I cannot imagine f1 like this,

  • This has to be one of the worst written Vo's ever...

  • great ronnie rest in peace

  • @MrFabietto66

    I think so, too

  • I think so, too

  • Its to bad racing isnt like what it used to be.

  • Wonderful discussion between two trolls. Good for my 'Book of Insults". :)

  • I remembered the Swedish driver Ronnie Peterson's fatal crash in Monza F1 Circuit since 1978. The serious incident didn't happen again 32 years later today after his death.

Thanks for posting, menglyz! This video is so memorable for me despite the scene is tragical. This is the worst racing incident in motor racing history that I'll never forget.

    R.I.P to Ronnie Peterson

  • It was a real shame that when in 2008 resorted to the thirtieth anniversary of the death of Peterson at Monza was not done nothing to commemorate it (not even a plaque to remember).

  • Very interesting video. RIP all the drivers that passed. I remember Fabrizio Barbazza almost died years later at Monza.

  • For F1-Drivers Monza is HELL!!!!

  • Interesting at 4.58 to see Didier Pironi comforting Ronnie - Didier of course later survived leg injuries which were probably much worse than Ronnie's.

  • Much things happen? Like what?

  • Poor Ronnie... Dying from a fat embolism because of his own blood marrow. It's even sadder because he could have survived. Thank God for advances in medicine because now it's much easier to monitor patients and make sure they're well

  • @supersevenn Ken Schrader was the first to Dale Earnhardt's car when they crashed in 2001.

  • I was only 10 years old when I saw this accident live on TV and I recieved the news in school the day after that he had passed away!

    Tragic!.

    Greatest swedish racer!

  • tragical. RIP Ronnii

  • Today. . . no driver would go running to another car to help.

  • Well, that's not true, though some (or maybe most) of the drivers wouldn't go, some would.

But there's a difference between aiding someone, who has an accident, and aiding someone, who has an accident and is on fire. When was the last crash with a burning car?

If someone has a big crash, there are marshalls, who can help. There are enough of them, to get the driver out of the car and into a hospital.

  • @supersevenn That's because there are no firey crashes anymore... if there were any, they would.

  • @supersevenn I can cetainly see mark webber doing it if it happened.

  • Comment removed

  • @darfunkelidas Me too. Mark is very hot on safety on F1 and I think he's got a very caring nature.

  • @ zippinen you are a stupid bastard! Peterson R.I.P

  • yeah,sometimes death takes tall.

  • is this footage from "speed fever" film ?

  • Patrese was perhaps unwise, but the blame was the supervisor authorizing the beginning, when some cars were still forming the grid after the warm up lap, causing the cars behind are coming with more speed than the cars in front, culminating this terrible accident.

  • RIP ronnie peterson!

  • Today no driver would run

  • R.I.P.

  • So tragic that a driver like Ronnie Peterson died in such an accident.R.I.P Ronnie.

  • Never forget, James Hunt, Clay Regazzoni and Patrick Depailler pulled him from the flames. All three are no longer with us. Ronnie's widow never got over it and killed herself in 1987. And it all could have been avoided by waiting until every car on the grid had stopped before throwing the green flag..

  • thank you for posting

  • 6:45 It looks like these days F1 Car.......R.I.P. Ronnie! So sad....

  • The foley artists of this video made an awful job.

  • Hunt jueputa culpo injustamente a Patrese

  • ok, they are all volunteers - anyway, the drivers are always been a guinea pigs for Bernie (and his pervert money) and testing engineers.

Not very human, but when there is money in other side, it seems to be ok. Also these fatal crashes bring money to "those guys" behind this circus.

  • You will never be forgotten Ronnie.

  • R.I.P ronnie.. i live in sweden in the town where ronnie grow up... Orebro! and we have a monument of him in the city and we also have a museum here where the louts car is and alot of pictures and movies on him. and so on and on... we will always love u ronnie.. see u on the ohter side!

  • It wasn't the tracks fault, in fact, even with those cars on a track today, he'd have survived, because they'd have sorted out his legs better and sooner. R.I.P. Ronnie.

  • Lots of good drivers got killed driving Lotus cars. Took a finesse style to keep them on the track, and sometimes that wasn't enough.

  • This takes me back, as Ronnie was one of my boyhood idols, together with my countryman, Jody Scheckter; or Jolly as I apparently used to call him

  • Thanks for that SpeedMerchants. There is also an earlier one called "The quick and the dead," it starts at watkins Glen and I recall Jackie Stewart doing a lap of the Nurburgring driving a Rolls Royce. Part of the dialogue is used on the 1973 sason review at speed with Hawden Ganley driving and JYS describing

  • Until this F1 season it was a tos up as to who was the least deserving World Champion, Phil Hill in 1961 or Andretti in 1978.

Jenson Button know holds that dis-honour, but Andretti relied on team orders to keep Ronnie down.

Ronnie was one of the absolute greats of the sport

  • That's bullshit and you are clueless. Jacques Villeneuve deserves that title, or perhaps Piquet in '81 or '87. With Jacques even Patrick Head said he "made a meal" of winning the '97 title in by far the best car. Remember Button destroyed JV at BAR in '03.

Jenson is thoroughly deserving. In his first year in a top-flight car he won it. Grow up.

  • Which part is bullshit? Peterson wanted to be back in a car where he could showcase his talent and Andretti was not prepared to give up his No 1 status, therefore he could only win when Andretti broke down, was severly delayed or stopped. That is not bullshit, it's fact.

In 1981 the fastest driver was Alan Jones, but he made two really silly errors while leading an had a race taken from him. Likewise in 87, Mansell was far and away the fastest driver.

  • The bullshit part was your mention of Button not being a deserving winner - nothing to do with Peterson. I'm well aware of Peterson's history and the story surrounding the '78 season, the following year had a similar situation with Villeneuve and Schekter.

  • That shows how little you know, Ferrari had no team orders and relied on the rivers making their own agreements. Everyone points to Monza and Villeneueve holding station, thats why he was such a fine sportsman; he made an agreement and stuck to it.

Under the system where all points counts, Scheckter would have won by more points, but he won under the system in place as well.

What you patently prove is that you canot be objective because you cannot see past who you support.

  • That's fair enough but was Gilles a fine sportsman or just naive (expecting the favour returned by Jody in 1980)? There's no doubting how glorious he was but he's the same as Peterson in many aspects. A genius talent but something got in the way of it reaching the top.

  • I am a Piquet fan, but at least I am not so blinded by my like of the driver that I cannot see that 2 of his three championships were because of others making mistakes. Of course to finish first, first you must finish.

As to 2003, do you remember Tony Brise destroyed Graham Hill in 1974 (maybe you will need to do a wiki search to find out who they are) Just like JV, 6 years earlier he was World Champion. rivers get slower as they get older.

  • Perhaps you should use wikiphrase to look up "patronising twat".

Brise and Hill - different era, a comparison to 2003 is vacuous at best. "Rivers get slower as they get older"? Depends on the individual. Age hasn't stopped Schumacher, nor did it stop Ickx, Mansell, McNish etc etc. proving themselves. Also, rivers do not get slower as they get older - it is such a complex issue involving a myriad of reasons I can't even be bothered to write it out.

  • It would be interesting to see how they define a patronising vagina, although other than your mother's you probably haven't been near one since, except when you pay for it. If you think you justified your answer then I suggest you ask your school for a refund, as you justified nothing.

I get the impression you are so stupid you have to drop your trousers to count to two, and then forget have way though what you are up to.

People like you are a fine example of the benefits of abortion

  • Oooo, bitchy response. You can't expect to be as condescending as you were and not consider a possible retaliation.

Interesting how you're becoming belligerent when I question your integrity. Very interesting. Like when paint flops off a wall.

  • Lets see how Schumacher gets on against Rosberg in a winning car .

As for making a meal, Button won in the end because of the novice mistakes of Vettel. Think of the points he threw away whereas a wiser older Button did not.

You are forgetting the first rule of a human being, opinions are like arseholes, we all have one. And only an arsehole would not allow someone to have an opinion. Of course all you can reply with is words like bullshit and clueless without actually justifying your reply.

  • I did justify my reply, but in your arrogance you missed my point entirely.

You don't need to adopt an Orwellian attitude on me - you are fundamentally contradicting yourself anyway. Perhaps you should use wikisearch to find out why.

  • @AndrewMacdonald1970 so therefore button was the better driver!

  • You go on believing what you like and don't forget to tell the pharmacist that you don't have to pay the prescription charge because you on job seekers allowance.

Why do you pose another question without answering the first one. Yes that's right you going to vote for Gordon's moron's on 6 May. Look on the bright side they may even send you to University to study Tiddly winks. Bet you fail though.

Hamilton will out-qualify and out-race muppet in 80% of the races tis year. Statistic enough!

  • @AndrewMacdonald1970 try reading the reply secondly before throwing insults you should try typing the corect grammer and the new fact is when you do this sort of thing it means you have just lost the argument

last but not least facts are based on what has happened, not what may happen num nuts!

  • When Youtube is playing up and you cannot see all of your reply it is quite difficult to ensure its gramatically correct. You cannot lose an argument when the person is so incredible stupid that they cannot reply to a point. Ask mommy to explain that point tonight when she gets home from her shift getting poked for living. Then tomorrow pop down to William Hill and tell then you want to place a bet on Button winning the 2009 World Championship.

  • Your facts are based on what you want to believe, not on what they mean in relative terms to your argument.

When Button is hammered by Hamilton this year and struggles against all the other drivers in similiar cars, then it will prove that just like in 1978 the car won the championship and the driver was pretty irrelevant. But you go on believeing whatever your shrink tells you you can. Don;t come off the medication and why don't you treat yourself to one of Mommy's friens tonight.

  • @AndrewMacdonald1970 buttons such a bad driver he wins the australian gp 2010

    im being sarcastic! num nuts

  • I initially though you were just below average intelligence, but this response of yours shows that you are in the truly stupid category, probably with an IQ in double figures. I have never said Button is not a good driver, there have been many who were good enough to win races, but not deserving of a championship; Patrese, Boutsen, Barrichello, Regga. Button is there in my opinion, but today he drove very well and taught McLaren a lesson about tactics and conditions. He won in the 4th best car.

  • That is the sign of a good driver, McLaren tactics going unchallenged by Hamilton meant he lost 3rd, possibly 2nd because unlike Button he did as he was told and did not challenge it. If McLaren had forced him to stay out and he then stopped after Hamilton, as Hamilton was then lead driver for McLaren he would have had the similiar afternoon to Webber. The drive was mature and well judged, but track position allows you to do that, Ferrari proved in with the charge of LH and MW toward the end

  • @AndrewMacdonald1970 yes and this provides the fact that Button is a deserving world champion which is exactly what this discussion is about, its just a shame you react like a 5 year old with the less than intelligent insults, well done however in coming back with a near sensible answer

  • It makes him a deserving world champion in your eye's and that is your opinion, it does not mean that I agree with you. If he had won the championship in the way Schumacher did in 2002 in a superior then maybe he was deserving, the fact is when things got tough, he was like a der in the headlights and stumbled to the championship on the errors and mechanical reliabilty of his rivals. Alonso in the Braun last year would have ha the championship sewn up by Spa, against Button a race or 2 later

  • @AndrewMacdonald1970 if a driver wins a championship he then deserves that championship, the only time this does not apply is when that person rams on purpose his opposition on the last race when it can go down to the wire

secondly, other teams caught and past the Braun for speed and thats why Button didnt do as well in the 2nd half of the season, as for Alonso having it sewn up earlier, maybe but thats an if not a fact

  • @AndrewMacdonald1970 how the hell can you state button is an undeserving world champion, he won the championship fare and square without team orders and with the amout of shit hes had to drive in the past, he bloody well deserves it!

    what a stupid comment
