  • ...another classic!

  • Probably my first adventure game besides Hugo's adventure games. These games had me try every possible combination to make the character do anything at all. My limited 8 year old knowledge couldn't get past most of the puzzles and I do miss the good old days when graphics like this were the most amazing thing on the market.

  • what was so interesting about this game was how it worked differently depending on which characters u chose

  • Always liked the NES version best because of the music.

  • Why did they make the Ed family green in the later versions of the game? I never got that. I think it adds to it, though.

  • Best damn youtube videos are from this guy. I salute you.

  • I was checking out all the games behind you. We have similar tastes in gaming, tuna head.

  • thanks for recognizing this classic. I know it like the back of my hand and still enjoy playing it to this day. Impressive how much game they crammed into this!

If you are familiar with Day of the Tentacle, theres a fangame in the works, a DoTT style remake of Maniac Mansion. "Night of the Meteor"

  • I'm amaze how much game and story you could get off a 64k ram computer.

  • Nes version sucked. C64 best!

  • This game stole thousands of hours of my life as a kid. If anybody finds them, please return them

  • I just found Matt Chat please do not make it go away! Loved the interview about halflife on mac.

  • what was the surfer dud good at?

  • Comment removed

  • George Lucas should make this into a movie instead of keeping up this trend of unnecessary sequels.........

  • Thanks Matt !

  • Asian wives waiting # lushfmlk.info #

  • the NES version was so much better IMO still a great game though

  • Very cool coverage, always liked this game, I say it when it came out for NES in my Nintendo Power magazine. Thought it looked really fun, I should have bought it.

  • Nice review friend ! Maniac mansion to this day is still one of my fav's !

  • I sure hope they'll make a remake of Maniac Mansion because I'm having a blast playing Secret of Monkey Island: SE on my iPhone.

  • This game was so cool, I kinda lear my english with games like that when I was kid!

  • I posted this link of one of the hottest new Horror-Thriller writers out there, as he would be the 'dream writer' for this cult classic.

  • There is a couple new versions of this original, a windows based version with enhanced graphics (2004) and people are working on a new one called meteor mess (2010). This game is a classic and worth re-exploring IMO.

  • my favorite game!

  • Awesome Game!

  • This has been and still is one of my all time favorite video games..

I still have and play it even to this day..

I know every possible way to beat the game using the combination of characters.. (along with all the sub puzzles each character can do..) Now all we need is either a pc or playstation 3 or 4 remake or a live action blockbuster movie of this classic game.

  • Along with Zak Mcracken this one of the best games ever made for the C64 :-)

  • Maniac Mansion is a great game. That and Zak McCracken inspired me a lot when I was a child.

  • <3 Lucasarts!

  • I love this game! My all time favorite! I wish they would have made more parts to this game.

  • Great show! :)

  • Matt-

Only just realized you publish books!!!

Will deffo look into getting Vintage games. lol

  • Long live "Maniac Mansion"!!!

  • please veiw my maniac mansion videos

  • also love the ref to EAB, keep reviewin man, your A1

  • love the reference to rocky horror

  • best game ever, n it made me stumble into your videos

  • I was a pretty big fan of Maniac Mansion.

Though I never got to finish the Wendy ending of the game.

  • wow.. when will this be released, 2010 ? it looks great

  • I've never played this one before, but it looks like a lot of fun. Will definitely have to keep my eye out for a copy of it.

    Nice review.

  • love the music on this version of maniac mansion

  • Good rewieu. I like that you talking meanwhile you playing the game..

    ;)

  • One of my all time fave nes games, not being a pc gamer I was so jealous of monkey island, and some of the other awesome games like this

  • It's amazing how deprived consoles have been of good point-and-click adventure games. Even now most of the adventure games are not being ported from PC.

  • @blacklily8 TellTale has been pretty good about getting it's games on as many platforms as possible.

  • Don't know if you saw my comment from the Myst video or if it was just an awesome coincidence! anyways great stuff!

  • Roboyto68, I had plans to do it at some point, and that was the tipping point! Thanks for watching and commenting.

  • Another amazing video mate and I loved this game. The sequal was even better!

I cant beleive Ive never seen your vidoes before. Ive got a lot of catching up to do now ha ha cheers ;o)

  • Since I owned a C64 I heard alot about this game, but never got around to buying or playing it. I probably didn't understand the type of humor it used. All the characters seem to be chewing gum! Great video, keep up the good work!

  • Great review! Nice presentation. I barely remembered this game so this brought back a lot of memories.

  • Thanks! Happy to fire those synapses for you!

  • Awesome as usual :)

I played a bunch of LucasArts games including of course DotT but I've never had the opportunity to try this one.

I cannot remember if I had french dub for DotT.... I vividly remember Bernard saying "neat" all the time! :)

If you're looking for more recent wacky adventure games there's abviousyl Vampyre Story but also check out So Blonde a true new old school classic.

  • DotT is also one of my favorites. It's definitely a must-play for anyone into LucasArts adventure games. I've heard of but haven't played Vampyre Story or So Blonde yet. I actually play a *LOT* of new adventure games, so it's just a matter of time. :)

  • time is the big factor :)

I also have Immortals of Terra, Murder at the Abbey, Runaway 2, the Siberia and Amerzone.....

    too many game :/

  • Hello to Chuck for me ^_^ !!!

Just kidding :P I discovered this game when I was a kid on the NES version, and I could'nt stop playing back then! I even bought a magazine with the whole maps and solutions for one of the teams, but never finished this game actually... Hm.. I guess then, that means we're gonna have to go...

    ...Back...To the MANSION ?!?!? O-o !!!!

  • Nice, sometimes I think you film too much of the intro (takes up valuable time in the critique!).

My all time fave is still Zak, I think its more refined than MM1 but its a masterpiece when you think what they fit in on the c64

  • As always a very nice Mat Chat, excellent choice. Interesting to see Day of the Tentacle figures appearing in this game and the interface being already very much like the later games.

  • nice video

  • Thanks!

  • Nice job on the video. Did you ever play "Labyrinth"? It's the "forgotten" Lucasfilm Games adventure, think it's pre-Scumm but somewhat similar. It has some really nasty puzzles ;-)

  • Hmm...Did you watch the video? :)

  • I did, but I missed that part... *grin*

  • You did a great job with the video, this is yet another game I really want to try out after watching! I heard about it before but I never took the time to really look into it before this.

  • Enjoy!

  • I loved this game...and of course--Ron Gilbert! He's one of my all-time favorite game designers. Another favorite is Steve Meretzky, also with a great wacky sense of humor, but since he mostly did text, I can't imagine that one of his games would make a very good video review (though I'd love it anyway, hint, hint.)

Anyway, thanks for the great review and "taking me back" to this classic jewel. Cheers! --Richard

  • I've had the honor of talking to both them--Steve in person, Ron over email. Just knowing such intelligences exist in the universe is reassuring. :)

    Thanks for watching!

  • Great review!

Love this game, finished it more times than I can remember... mostly played the Amiga version.

Didn't even know what the NES version was like until a few years ago. I still haven't played that version.

I think you can use the mouse when playing the NES version in ScummVM.

  • A true pioneer to a great genre which isn't getting to much love anymore :(

Great vid man! Like the graphics on the Amiga version.

  • Thanks!

  • One of my bandmate's favorite all time games he was always a lot better at it than I ... Only played it on NES until just this year actually. I like the mouse interface much more than the controller but honestly prefer NES for every other reason.

Thank you again for your presentation

    Aberran

  • I wonder if there's a mouse option for the NES version. Anyway, thanks for watching!

  • maybe if you convert it to scummvm I'll look into that for us but in the NES emulation not that I am aware of only thing I can map to the mouse is the lightgun so far. Yet using that maybe there is a hack of such I can figure even.

It like myst I don't mind playing with an analog joystick. ..

  • Indeed a converted rom to scummvm format to make the proper executable file allows hotkeys and mouse support.

Glad that I looked into it

  • That's good to know! Thanks!

  • Enjoyed the video. Anyone know of a website where I can pay to download a legal version of this?

  • I've played Maniac Mansion on Commodore 64 long time ago... well played is not the word I want to use because I was unable to read english at that time except a few words (programming games in BASIC back then). So, I've never get far in this game, but I did enjoy the animations, colors and the idea. So, I did miss all the humor, so not a very good first contact for me.

  • I'm surprised there wasn't a localized version for you. I know there were some Dutch versions. It does say something for the game that it was fun even if you didn't know the language, though!

  • Imagine playing this game for the first time but everything is in french and your only experience of french is by tv and cook books. I did heard english on tv and know how to write some words by programming BASIC.

What I did back then was watching my older brother playing the game and repeating the same actions like pulling the front door carpet to get the key which is crucial.

For me it was a trial and error game without being able to read the story. I've never passed the tentacle upstairs.

  • I'm always on the lookout for the NES version when I am getting games, I've heard a lot of good things about Maniac Mansion. Great overview!

  • Thanks, n8!

  • Two of my classmates at school had this game, on PC and Commodore 64. They would tell me how great it was. A year or two later, I finally got to play it on the NES, and I enjoyed every minute. Tried different combinations of characters, microwaved the hamster... And it inspired me to make my own adventure games.

  • I played it on DOS first. I'm not sure what the overall best version is, but I'm sure the NES version is up there. What adventure games did you make?

  • The NES version is nice - no load times, the scrolling/walking is fast. They had to alter a small bit of dialogue & graphics to meet Nintendo's code.

I didn't make any games you would know - just silly things for my friends & I to mess around with.

  • Well you've taken on a cult classic here haven't you? Well awesome job per usual Matt!

  • Thanks, Rob. Just wishing I had better video stills to choose from...Yikes!
