Probably my first adventure game besides Hugo's adventure games. These games had me try every possible combination to make the character do anything at all. My limited 8 year old knowledge couldn't get past most of the puzzles and I do miss the good old days when graphics like this were the most amazing thing on the market.
thanks for recognizing this classic. I know it like the back of my hand and still enjoy playing it to this day. Impressive how much game they crammed into this!
If you are familiar with Day of the Tentacle, theres a fangame in the works, a DoTT style remake of Maniac Mansion. "Night of the Meteor"
Very cool coverage, always liked this game, I say it when it came out for NES in my Nintendo Power magazine. Thought it looked really fun, I should have bought it.
There is a couple new versions of this original, a windows based version with enhanced graphics (2004) and people are working on a new one called meteor mess (2010). This game is a classic and worth re-exploring IMO.
This has been and still is one of my all time favorite video games..
I still have and play it even to this day..
I know every possible way to beat the game using the combination of characters.. (along with all the sub puzzles each character can do..) Now all we need is either a pc or playstation 3 or 4 remake or a live action blockbuster movie of this classic game.
It's amazing how deprived consoles have been of good point-and-click adventure games. Even now most of the adventure games are not being ported from PC.
Since I owned a C64 I heard alot about this game, but never got around to buying or playing it. I probably didn't understand the type of humor it used. All the characters seem to be chewing gum! Great video, keep up the good work!
DotT is also one of my favorites. It's definitely a must-play for anyone into LucasArts adventure games. I've heard of but haven't played Vampyre Story or So Blonde yet. I actually play a *LOT* of new adventure games, so it's just a matter of time. :)
Just kidding :P I discovered this game when I was a kid on the NES version, and I could'nt stop playing back then! I even bought a magazine with the whole maps and solutions for one of the teams, but never finished this game actually... Hm.. I guess then, that means we're gonna have to go...
As always a very nice Mat Chat, excellent choice. Interesting to see Day of the Tentacle figures appearing in this game and the interface being already very much like the later games.
Nice job on the video. Did you ever play "Labyrinth"? It's the "forgotten" Lucasfilm Games adventure, think it's pre-Scumm but somewhat similar. It has some really nasty puzzles ;-)
You did a great job with the video, this is yet another game I really want to try out after watching! I heard about it before but I never took the time to really look into it before this.
I loved this game...and of course--Ron Gilbert! He's one of my all-time favorite game designers. Another favorite is Steve Meretzky, also with a great wacky sense of humor, but since he mostly did text, I can't imagine that one of his games would make a very good video review (though I'd love it anyway, hint, hint.)
Anyway, thanks for the great review and "taking me back" to this classic jewel. Cheers! --Richard
One of my bandmate's favorite all time games he was always a lot better at it than I ... Only played it on NES until just this year actually. I like the mouse interface much more than the controller but honestly prefer NES for every other reason.
maybe if you convert it to scummvm I'll look into that for us but in the NES emulation not that I am aware of only thing I can map to the mouse is the lightgun so far. Yet using that maybe there is a hack of such I can figure even.
It like myst I don't mind playing with an analog joystick. ..
I've played Maniac Mansion on Commodore 64 long time ago... well played is not the word I want to use because I was unable to read english at that time except a few words (programming games in BASIC back then). So, I've never get far in this game, but I did enjoy the animations, colors and the idea. So, I did miss all the humor, so not a very good first contact for me.
I'm surprised there wasn't a localized version for you. I know there were some Dutch versions. It does say something for the game that it was fun even if you didn't know the language, though!
Imagine playing this game for the first time but everything is in french and your only experience of french is by tv and cook books. I did heard english on tv and know how to write some words by programming BASIC.
What I did back then was watching my older brother playing the game and repeating the same actions like pulling the front door carpet to get the key which is crucial.
For me it was a trial and error game without being able to read the story. I've never passed the tentacle upstairs.
Two of my classmates at school had this game, on PC and Commodore 64. They would tell me how great it was. A year or two later, I finally got to play it on the NES, and I enjoyed every minute. Tried different combinations of characters, microwaved the hamster... And it inspired me to make my own adventure games.
...another classic!

Why did they make the Ed family green in the later versions of the game? I never got that. I think it adds to it, though.

I played a bunch of LucasArts games including of course DotT but I've never had the opportunity to try this one.
I cannot remember if I had french dub for DotT.... I vividly remember Bernard saying "neat" all the time! :)
If you're looking for more recent wacky adventure games there's abviousyl Vampyre Story but also check out So Blonde a true new old school classic.

Love this game, finished it more times than I can remember... mostly played the Amiga version.
Didn't even know what the NES version was like until a few years ago. I still haven't played that version.
I think you can use the mouse when playing the NES version in ScummVM.

I played it on DOS first. I'm not sure what the overall best version is, but I'm sure the NES version is up there. What adventure games did you make?
blacklily8 2 years ago
The NES version is nice - no load times, the scrolling/walking is fast. They had to alter a small bit of dialogue & graphics to meet Nintendo's code.
I didn't make any games you would know - just silly things for my friends & I to mess around with.
