What a voice. Ernie was in my mind the greatest broadcaster in the business. Alot of those old classic broadcasters are gone now and none of them are as good as the old classic broadcasters. Those days are sadly gone. I think each team had their voice of summer, Allen in New York, Harwell in Detroit, Buck in St. Louis, Scully in LA and many more.
oh yeah your right, that's why the greatest players in the sport fail 70% of the time. in What other sport are you considered great when you fail more than you succede?
true, but that means the goalie, or the other team, succeeds 90% of the time. Listen man, i'm not saying baseball is the easiest or hardest sport, but even athletes in other sports have said that hitting a baseball is the hardest thing in sports to do. it is very hard to consistently hit a small ball with a small wooden bat. And on top of that, doing it under the grind of a 162 game schedule, not counting playoff games and spring training
first off do not comment on a video about a sport we all love, we dont put stupid comments up on videos of rafaldinho or watever the fuck his name is doin stupid foot tricks. Try and hit a 90 mph fastball square for a line drive, try and hit a nasty bender sqaure for a liner, try and paint the corner of the plate with a slider in a 02 count. I played soccer and it is the easiest sport to dominate, if you are semi athletic your good. Baseball takes skill, brains, and heart. any deusch can kick
for baseball, you don't have to practise to be good at it. For soccer you need to practise every day. That's how you can tell the difference between an easy sport and a difficult sport. If you don't need to practise something, then it's easy.
YOU DON'T HAVE TO PRACTICE? If you knew one thing about baseball, you'd know that the strongest argument from haters is that in a typical game, the ball in actually in play for less than 20 minutes. The speed what happens, the anticipation, the let down and the sparks of emotion mixed with droning dread or hope makes it seem like more happens. But to do anything in those few minutes or seconds of a play takes some of the most dedicated training. Baseball specific + weight training
Nice job. Thanks for taking the time to put that together. A sincere effort. Seeing that grainy footage of Sparky and Gibby really got to me. A Cheers to you and Tiger Stadium.
Sorry, I meant no offense...I just assumed you were a non-Tiger fan, or somebody from elsewhere in the country who wasn't that familiar with Ernie, and that that was the voice you were talking about.
The other voice belongs to Don Gonyea, who works for National Public Radio as a White House correspondent. He's from the Detroit area and a big Tiger fan.
may baseball be remembered as a past time and not a race to set something nor money but to get together and have fun. Unlike any other sport(Played them all). GO TIGERS!!!
Ernie Harwell wrote this essay for THE SPORTING NEWS in 1955. It's titled "The Game for All America".
When Harwell received the Ford Frick Award from the Baseball HOF in 1981, he recited this as part of his acceptance speech and added a new line at the end:
"Baseball is a tongue-tied kid from Georgia growing up to be an announcer and praising the Lord for showing him the way to Cooperstown."
Hank Greenberg hit something like 58 homers one year. Why isn't he mentioned either in the documentary or the song? He'd've beaten Ruth's record years before Marris did had he not been beaned or intentionally walked the last month of the season.
Why is there not one photo or mention of one of Detroit's best batters in this clip?
Some of the most salient memories of my youth are of curling up in bed on a sultry summer night with a transistor radio turned down low so I could listen to Ernie's call of that nights Tigers game without my parents knowing I was still awake. Go Tigers! Can't wait for the World Series!

In soccer, only 1 out of ten shots ON TARGET score so yeah... can baseball beat a 90% fail rate?

I am a Cards fan, not a Tiger's. At the same time I'm a "Shoeless" Joe Fan, not a Ty Cobb.
But at the same time I agree with Ty with the fact that basebaall hass too much money associated with it.
I pray for the day that "Shoeless" Joe Jackson joins forces with Ty Cobb in the National Baseball Hall of Fame!
