  • the whole band does not hhit the spot for me, too out of key,,, and elkie is not so crash hot,,, even janis joplin who was a lot more incosistent was a better soul singer,,

  • @jimisanta1 Janis Joplin was considered a Blues singer NOT a soul singer.Elkie voice was and is soooooo much better than Joplin. !!!! Turn UP your deaf aid !!!

  • @jimisanta1 You do have a hearing problem. Elkie Brooks NEVER sings out of key. Maybe you don't know what it means. LOL. Brooks has a much better voice than Joplin ,fact !!

  • I used to buy meth back in the 1980's from a guy who ran a junk shop as a cover for his real business.

He also sold me two Vinegar Joe albums for a quid.

I don't bother with the meth nowadays but VJ is still good.

  • Against Kim Weston's original and the Doobie Bros. remake, this is rough.

  • MOST UNDERATED female artist in my lifetime

  • @sarven10 TOTALLY underated !!!! Great voice.

  • I saw these guys at Luton Tech in the early 70's and they were dynamite. Elkie had such a vocal range and power it's a shame she then went "upmarket" into ballads and tended to stay there - look at the effect the tempo change in "Pearls a Singer" produces, the whole song takes off once she cuts loose. A real talent and certainly you hear her influence in other stars like Bonnie Rait. Great posts Stevids.

  • @Dolomede Saw Elkie in concert recently. She rocks !!!

  • R&B at its best!

  • espectacular dios mio que buena musica !!!!

  • not = now

  • I was in the audience that day! It sounded a lot better then it does not.... this has not aged well.

  • Great video, great song, great band, and even greater singer. Let Guttergirl, eh Shutupgirl, oeps, Freudian slip of the tongue... Suffergirl, (sorry, can't help myself) keep silent and get busy with her so called "academic musicbooks".... whatever they may be.

  • Constructive criticism is always welcome. Bitchy remarks from shuttergirl are better stored within her head

  • FANTASTIC !!!! ELKIE !!!!!

  • I went looking for Robert's burial place last summer in Switzerland. Found the cemetery but not the grave.

  • Voice reminds me of Gayle McCormick of the Group called "Smith "==Baby-It's You which Elkie should cover----Charlie

  • First saw them at the Reading Festival around 1972. Then caught them a few times on the London pub-rock scene (which was great around that time). They toured the Sundown theatres with Stackridge if I remember right).

Had the shock of my life during the 80s when Robert Palmer knocked on my door - he was opening a restaurant locally and going door-to-door promoting it and giving out discount leaflets. Signed my copy of Some Guys have All The Luck... but I never went to his restaurant. :)

  • shuttergirlUK . does not know how to count, Elkie has been with A&M after that Ledgend Records. This shuttergirlUK should be stopped from using youtube. Strange behaviour.

  • Ahhh opnions we are all entitled to them I guess - A&M for 15 years Legend Records (which went bust) and everything else has been licensed on a per record basis so she has technically not been under contract to anybody since then. Her voice is unusual and I agree has been inproved by technique and training but many younger vocalists cite her as a vocal gymnastics style they aspire to. As I say everybody has a right to an opinion and a little courtesy.

  • thanks for putting this up!

  • How did Elkie Brooks go from tight sounds like this to that fucking limp mums and dads dross she did in the late '70s and '80s?

  • Because the British market could not handle her, so toned her down. Made her more marketable. Shame, not really her.

  • It was the only way she could make a living at the music business - for somebody who had to go MOR she did it with style

  • You heard her sing live ? You can accuse her of lots of things but a thin tone aint one of them. She did make it as a singer in the UK in case you missed it. She should have made it bigger I agree - many reasons for that but the main one is poor managment !

  • Hi, shuttergirlUK is a strange case, best to be ignored. If fact I feel shuttergirlUK is somewhat deranged. A sad case. Elkie IS a stunning singer.

  • @farttart00000 shuttergirlUK is just an attention seeker and best ignored. There isn't a female singer who comes close to Elkie Brooks. Such a powerful voice and what a range. Still going strong with almost fifty years in the business. An astonishing talent. I wish you well.

  • @shuttergirlUK Go get a life you sad loser.

  • 3:22 she sings her soul through the roof. amazing

  • I saw them back in the day back up Joe Walsh & Barnstorm and headliner Wishbone Ash @ The Kinedic Playground in Chicago. One of my all time favorite concerts!

  • Robert Palmer and Elkie Brooks - does it get any better than this?

  • This is the first time I've heard this band,I never even knew Bob sang for them! Not bad! Who's the bloke on lead guitar?

  • Lead guitar, Pete Gage, ex husband of ELKIE BROOKS.

  • Love Elkie - throught out the years she's done the lot, total sytle XX

  • Once again, I enjoyed Vinegar Joe.They are/were FANTASTIC! Robert and Elkie are equally great singers.

  • nettiebaby, Totally agree.BOTH are/were great voices. Elkie being raunchier.

  • Robert Palmer is /was fantastic vocalist.

  • I think there should be a Vinegar Joe reunion, but I guess it REALLY wouldn't be the same without Robert

  • Yes a reunion would be good. I think it would work even with Robert.

  • Without Robert.

  • maybe we could make a ouija session in order to obtein his opinion

  • bassist is good

  • Thats Steve York

  • ELKIE BROOKS, WOW!!!!!!!

  • elkie brooks forever, thanxs from brazil!!!

  • Folks, I got work to do. How do you think, I will accomplish a lot after finding Vinegar Joe on Youtube..?!

Get me Ten Wheel Drive with Genya Ravan too, and I quit. ;-)

    or something.

  • Great video, first time I see a footage of Vinegar Joe. But this is a cover from the Doobie Bros, isn't it? My favorite from VJ is Black Smoke from the calumnet. Cheers, and thanks for that, like to see more stuff.

  • thanks for the video..Elkie is great !

  • what a video! thanks for posting. huge palmer fan. this is great

  • Jesus, how did I ever miss this group? I'm ashamed! They absolutely ROCK!! Elkie's voice sounds like Cher (in tone only).

  • Thanks for the clip, more please.

Robert Palmer along with Glenn Hughes was a superior white soul singer.RIP

  • Nice clip of a great band. Anyone have anymore of this show?

  • O.K., no doubt this band is tight and both Robert and Elkie can sing, but they do this performance MAJOR injustice by not singing to each other. This is a passionate song about gettin' one last taste of lovin' before your lover splits. They don't even acknowledge each other's presence on the stage...

  • were you lookin' for romance or rock and roll .. ya gotta stay on mic ya know . I bet your a girl huh?

  • Not a girl, just a veteran musician who understands the elements that could have elevated this decently rockin' performance to a higher level. Have you ever seen Mick Jagger w/ Tina Turner or Meatloaf w/ Karla ?Devito? It's not rocket science to face each other during key lyrical points in a song or to even ROCK on one mic together. So, this clip is cool, but it could have been a lot hotter - end of story.

  • sorry for the slam mate . from your name I'm guessing you're a drummer . watched the vid again and I guess your right . ..but it looks like Robert did try to get her attention a couple of times ... to no avail

  • Whats the problem! Maybe the had a barney before going on stage. I have seen Elkie many times live and is certainly interacts with the band.

  • Those who think they should be staring lovingly in each other eyes have missed the obvious. That only happens when a singer has a guest singer for a one off duet. Elkie and Rob were joint lead singers in the band. It would be ridiculous if they gazed tenderly at each other for every song, Think about it!!!They are NOT singing to, or about each other. Ive got other Elkie /Rob duets but I'm too upset now! to put them on YOU TUBE!!! I'll just watch and enjoy them on my own

  • I totally agree with you. Please can we have more V.J.

  • Wow...I hope my comment didn't keep you from sharing more clips of VJ. It was just my opinion. And I didn't say they should be "staring lovingly into each other's eyes," I said I would have appreciated more interaction given what the song is about. If you're going to share things here, you are going to have to be prepared for feedback that's not all glowing and congratulatory. It was nice to see this clip, but a drag to see you take such offense to the thoughts I took time and thought to share.

  • Hi There. No problem. I wasnt really upset. Just my sarcastic English humour. I think I put more VJ up but will check. For you I will upload another VJ vid. but they are really hard to find. No replies to my request to exchange vids todate. regards

  • Ok ok but just don't forget about Robbie, it was certainly his best period as a singer! Never understood the strange mix of musicstyles though... blues and rock on one album? Joe

  • Elkie Brooks was a force in V.J. and still is.

  • Fantastic - why this band never charted big time I will never know - Elkie has often said that VJ was the time she was the most happy in a professional sense - I can tell theat from her performance

  • Fabulous band. Elkie still has much the same figure these days.A gem of a clip. Is Pete Gage (Elkie's ex) the one who does the guitar solo? Where is he now? Terry Clary

  • Yes he is. I believe he lives in Australia Now. Does or used to teach/lecture in Music
