I'm not sure what all the fuss is about- He's playing it In A as usual, but the Guitar is tuned down a full step (DGCFAD)  as that Is the Tuning used for Jenny Wren (and Yesterday, of course) . His Electric versions are still In Standard.

It's standard tuning. The same way they played it back in the 60's. Open string tuning didn't come along for many years later - late 80's or early 80's I think.

Paul is tuned down one whole step to make the guitar sound lower so that he could sing it more comfortably. His voice is not what it once was (it is a bit lower) so he simply tuned down. Hendrix, Van Halen (with David Lee Roth at least) etc. did it all of the time.

As for open tuning. It has been around for a hundred years if not many more. Look up Son House and you will see that he is in open-G tuning. There are many old blues number that use it and they are on YouTube.

I have been trying to perfom this song, and I can't figure out the tunning guitar; I only know that is the same guitar that Paul uses also in jenny wren song, so maybe it wolud be a half step down, cause I did try and sounds good to me with half; but when i play it, just doesn't sound like the video.

I've seen him do this song in its original form live several years after this, yes his voice has changed, but he can still do the original version, it appears in this version he just wanted a more low key, ambient feel. It's not a question of ability, just preference for this specific venue.

It is tuned down a whole step, but not necessarily because it is easier for him to sing (he just did this song at Coachella '09 in the correct key/tuning). It's tuned down because this performance was filmed at the same time "Chaos and Creation" was released. "Jenny Wren" is on that album and is tuned down a whole step, like "Yesterday" was over 40 years ago. He performed "Jenny Wren" during this performance and used the same guitar. I agree his voice is not what it used to be, though.

Yes, this was probably one of the last great real joint compositions by John and Paul. This version is interesting though, as you can imagine that it could have ended up on Macca's first solo album in this form - still a good song, but made so much stronger by John's counterpoint, that is absent from this track. It's good that Paul chooses not to sing John's part here - can only wonder who or what he's thinking about as he sings it...

I believe Paul does know that the "magic" stopped when The Beatles broke up. Without John writing, playing and singing along side him, it just isn't the same. I am sure John thought the same. Either way, I believe this is a loving tribute by Paul to his mate, John.

Paul did not do this as a tribute to John. since the song is actually pieces of three unfinished songs. Two by John, titled Everybody Had A Hard Year and Watching Rainbows, and Pauls unfinished I've Got A Feeling, which was written about Linda.
