Used to do a 20 minute version of this song (full on) with one of the first guitarists in Hawaii (that I knew) who had an echoplex. I was a drummer and boy was I tired at the end. RIP Syd.
"I opened the door and nearly shit myself, by Christ it was loud. I had certainly never heard anything quite like it before." - Abbey Road Engineer Pete Bown on Interstellar Overdrive
I love Syd Barrett's wonderful contribution to PInk Floyd! It has made an impact that no other artist but Pink Floyd and Led Zeppelin could have on me. I am a guitar player and I love the originality of his riffs. Especially since he was known to sometimes bang his guitar strings until they just downright detuned and broke it. He is a true rockstar and will always be one of my favorites. Does anyone else think the same?
@highndry127 well, yes and no.. Barrett was a fucking genius. Listen to some earlier tracks from Piper at the Gates of Dammit, and you will see. Also, before they started recording... it was incredible. He was the mastermind behind the lyrics and music, essentially. But, as with so many other great artists, the fame, money, drugs, and stress got to him. Be finally cracked. He wouldn't show up at gigs, or if he did, he would just sit and stare blankly out at the crowd.
Gilmour is and was. a great guitarist and musician, and, although comparable to Barrett, cannot top what Barrett did to Pink Floyd. Don't get me wrong, I love all Pink Floyd. They both had strong influences in the band. But, Barrett's was far greater.
@armpits17 With Syd or David, it's still Pink Floyd! A real Pink Floyd fan wouldn't call their albums with Gilmour "shameful music". They both have different styles and are very unique players, but it's still Pink Floyd.
@slpplexi1969 im not really a pink floyd fan though, i'm a syd barrett fan. im not even 'david vs syd' because i know David is a more talented guitarist. i don't really look at music like that though, im more into Syd's artsy style with song writing and guitar playing.
@ElectricBlueCitrus Yes pink floyd was first the beatles did psychedelic music but nothing particularly relating to outer space [ the tornadoes did telstar in 63 and life on venus]
this song is fucking good for trippy... imagine yourself listening this music with a cigarette and beer, look outside the window, then see a million imaginations. thx Pink Floyd for the most cool clasic song ever :)
@jamieg1tube Calm down, friends. We mustn't judge our fellow man for his opinions. He hasn't been properly indoctrinated into Pink Floyd, and so it is our responsibility to help him rather than embarass him. Now, Help me save his soul!
@wikiwikiwee1 It sounds like something out of a"Get Smart" or "Star Trek" episode. That old Moog I really don't care for, though Rick was an astonishing musician. The guitar parts are utter nonsense, uninspiring, disjointed. The drums I admire, for having the creativity to actually put a beat to this is astounding. I love Floyd, don't get me wrong, I just like later Floyd better.
@jamieg1tube aye fuck you dude all pink floyd is good pink floyd you wouldnt know good music if it bit u in the fucking ass i bet you couldnt do all the shit theyve done to change music if you knew anything about them youd be able to comprehend that but you just cant understand them
When Syd Barrett was with Pink floyd, Pink Floyd was Acid, Psychedellic, space rock. We he left, Roger Waters took over and they became prog, experimental rock.
@musacworld there were hundreds, whenever they played it at live shows they would improvise and add new twists onto it, but only two were ever recorded
@joanthonquaken - i know that i LOVE Syd's lyrics. some of the most ponderous and engaging poetry i have ever had the pleasure of wondering and dreaming about!
ok, i know that not everyone is going to like this, but i cannot imagine why they would take the time and effort to come here and vote down! i have been listening to progressive and psychedelic music for about 40 years now, and in all my sonic travels i have not encountered anything as enduring and awe inspiring as what Syd has made for us. I miss him so much.
this guy is one of the most important guitar players of whole story of pink floyd despite of releasing just 2 albums with them before fall in drugs. Why? Brain Damage, Any Color You Like, maybe the entire Dark Side album...
