  • Very thorough and well presented. I wonder how many characters have these option selects, these days, though

  • hmmm interesting and informative, dunno how useful this is to me because i am fcuking shit at SF....absolutely rank rotten:)

  • I hadn't heard the term "option select" until the fighting games of this generation. Was this analysis only started more with more recent fighting games or has it always been there but not discussed?

  • @HinataChan30 Been there since Street Fighter II.

  • now i fcking finally understand!!

  • Is it me or does the Street Fighter IV animation look more smooth than Super Street Fighter IV (Arcade Edition) animation?

  • @KEANIZZL Its just you.

  • Maybe I'll get this someday... but I didn't understand a thing. :(

  • why did i write but twice lol.

  • Man, i always mess up my timing to option select tech throws. I dont mash it and i know your supposed to delay it but a bit but damn isn't there like a three frame tech window, thats shits hard online. Anyone else have this problem. Yes i am a scrub fraaaay.

  • the daigo option selct is how a ken beat me last night lol

  • only two option selects with balrog

  • Option selects are easy! Just have to have the muscle memory too implement them alot!

  • I STILL don't understand HOW to do an Option Select...

    God this is difficult..

  • sent by Snootch

  • Hey lord, a little question: can you add subtitle to this video for people who don't understand totally spoken english?

  • Thank you

  • I've been looking for this type of tutorial. Thanks for taking the time to put it together and I hope you do more.

  • @50Calabyte What does this have to do with blocking? You hold back to block, I think most people would say that that's much easier than a block button.

  • @50Calabyte you are so bad at fighting games, lol.

  • @50Calabyte

you need a degree to hold back? Pressing back is a lot easier then pressing a designated block button. If you are losing to someone who spams hadoken/shiryuken it probably because you suck and don't bother to learn how to counter something so easy.

  • @50Calabyte

wow i bet you suck at mk9 as well, also you are stuck below 1000pp you are not going to fight good people until past that, also if they are spamming and you cannot punish that is on you for being dumb and refusing to learn.

  • @50Calabyte SF is as simple as competitive fighting games get. Note that I didn't say 'easy'. Besides, the more you play fighting games, the more you'll see that holding back to block is more intuitive than pressing a button. Might sound crazy, but a lot of FG players feel the same way.

  • @50Calabyte your totaly stupid and wrong

  • @50Calabyte Only shitty players play you cause you have a low ranking try getting a good score and then you will play with people who will beat you in no time. Either way you enjoy a game or you dont. DO NOT GO POSTING dumb shit on OTHER PEOPLES videos

  • @50Calabyte

If you hate fighting games, don't play them.

  • @50Calabyte You may wana play BlazBlue or Marvel 3, I play BlazBlue myself and love it, I can understand how you feel, I'm trying to pick up SF4 and horrified finding out that its like this.

  • @Andru157 Blazblue AND MvC3 both have option selects as well. They just arent as well known in the case of BB,in Marvel Option select air throw is used all the time.

  • @50Calabyte i loled thanks

  • @50Calabyte <- Ladies and gentlemen, I present to you: a scrub.

    Stay free scrub.

  • @50Calabyte lololol sell the FUCKING game you DUMB bitch.

  • @50Calabyte Go back to CoD, son.

  • @50Calabyte Ryu isn't even remotely close to the best character. If you can't beat hadouken spammers and don't get this then you will NEVER be good a SF games.

This is a fundamental that every top level player know in and out.

  • BEST DESCRIPTION EVER! options elect.com and SRK should link to you

  • You are literally the first person who made me understand option selects. You're awesome man.

  • This is really helpful, Thanks.

  • Went to look up stuff on Evil ryu, ended up on your save the combo video. Went to look up stuff on option selects, and without realizing it i hit one of your videos again. Lucid, informative, and absolutely approachable even for someone new to street fighter like me. Subscribed.

  • Still a bit confused lol.

  • this is the best description of option select ive found thank you.

  • Y I NO UNDERSTAND WHAT YOU SAYING!?

  • @foodmore werd

  • @foodmore take an english speaking class

  • @COREYMCGUIRE1993 It's a joke you fucking moron.

  • @wtfdudenotcool101 wow, calm down.

  • @COREYMCGUIRE1993 Either you're such an idiot that you didn't gather it was a joke or you're an asshole who replied literally to a joke.

Either way I don't people like you. Fuck off.

  • @wtfdudenotcool101 Feel like a big man lmao, i cant tell when someone is being sarcastic, i was playing along with the joke but you thought you would be clever and start an argument over something that had nothing to do with you. Grow up and stop being a twat.

  • @foodmore cuz ur dumb

  • @SoapBark

Dumb? Sure? I can see 16 people agreeing with him...

  • could you please make more 3 minute fundamental videos please?

  • @soulsurge84 Option Selects have been around since Street Fighter II. Anything that is in the game engine is not cheating. That's like saying tick throws are cheating or karas are cheating.

  • @lordofultima kara is CHEATING!

  • @lordofultima If you ask me if you think about it maybe it's not cheating, but from what i understand its basically removing the player knowledge or the player from playing the game. If all u have to do is do a input where the game automatically chooses the best thing then wheres the player skill? Not saying you could win the whole match this way but it definitely makes it so the opposite player who has no knowledge of option select is at a cheap disadvantage and will take more dmg more often.

  • @soulsurge84 its all part of the game. Too be honest without this, SF wouldn't be as fun or challenging

  • @soulsurge84 I know what you mean, but once you actually try to perform them, you'll realize not only is there a fair amount of skill and timing required to successfully pull these off, but there are still ways for your opponent to get around them. So its just another level of the meta-game I believe its called.

  • @soulsurge84 Why is it cheating? It's just part of the game, not like a game genie is involved.

  • How could someone dislike this is beyond me.

  • This was incredibly useful, thanks.

  • i always forget to fav this

  • I must ask- do you absoluely have to learn option select in order to get better?

  • @keysoffate4 no there's plenty of players/characters that get by just fine without option selects.

  • for competitive play, yeah you do. They help you alot in various situations, and they'll also aid in getting into your opponent's head. If you're just gonna be playing online and against cpus, I don't think it really matters, since people don't really play smart online. (atleast not ranked matches)

  • this is the stuff people need to learn to hang with the big guys in tournaments

most people online dont have a clue about any of this shit but think their good because they managed to pull off a combo which are not difficult to learn

  • see i did this all the time...didnt know it was option selcting thanks alot good video

  • Great video. Lots of useful information here. And it is very clearly put together.

  • aka luck and mash

  • Wow! Good video! I'd been wondering what and Option Select was after hearing it a few times in tournament videos.

  • Can someone explain the safe jump?

  • @SwAgGiNg559 safe jump is jumping in on an opponent as they are getting up and timing it so you cant be hit by that characters reversal. i think....

  • I'm liking the crouch tech because I am so bad at predicting tick throws. =).

  • thanks man great vid and explaination kudos to you for taking the time to make a video explaining these things so more people like myself can learn

  • I subbed bc of this video. You're a great source of knowledge!

  • Lordofultima, I just wanna say I hate you so much for being so goddamn helpful. Questions?

  • Wait, should you plink the Cr. roundhouse from the meaty jab? :o

  • Question, though. The air buffer-- that is, buffering an aerial roundhouse (j.HK) into a special...

I main Cody, so I'm wondering whether or not a Criminal Upper, maybe an LP Criminal Upper or somesuch, could be used for such a thing. I whiff alot with my jumping roundhouse on approach, and I need a safer way to push out and recover. Since Criminal Upper (<3) has good pushback when blocked and good damage when it isn't, I think it'd be useful if I could. Or, maybe a Ruffian Kick would work...

  • you were very thorough. thank you for that!

  • Good information. Wrt the game, allowing this kind of stuff seems kinda cheap.

  • Is it possible to practise this in training mode on your own/ i can't understand how to get the cpu dummy knocked down and record the reversal as it's too too random?

  • Option Selecting is like playing rock and scissors at the same time.

  • i still dont get it lol

  • So I can do Daigo OS with Dan?

  • This is too sick for me. I enjoy Streetfighter but if it takes all this nonsense to be good at the game, I give up.

Great tutorial though. I now fully understand Option Selects.

  • @acwh79 I completely understand. Im a SF veterant, been playing since I was 9 (25 now) and I loose like 75% of the time (or worse).BUT I REFUSE TO GIVE UP. I will practice and practice and practice so I can teach all those cheap assholes a lesson.

  • @verminslayer Get a Fightpad mate. The PS3 controller is no good. If you want to spend some serious cash then you could go for a stick but I find that their a bit too big to rest on my lap properly.

  • @acwh79 PS3 controller does the job. It's a bit fiddly at times though.

  • I call myself an akuma user but sadly i cant pull this loop off :(,,i wonder what the hell im doing wrong...cant seem to land the jab after the standing hk,,,i tried starting with the jab then almost simultaneously press hk then mk but i still fail,,,ive been trying this for months but i still FAIL,,,i use a mod free Hori ex2 stick if thats got anything to do with it

  • Great information with kick-ass editing and presentation. Thanks!

  • Very well put together video, it was easy to grasp with your comprehensible examples, and you had some neat editing.

  • So if you wanted to option-select Sakura's c.mk=>DP, you would add the DP while she is performing the c.mk, and if it connects she will follow up with the DP or if it's blocked she won't?

  • Okay I get it. Basically what's happening for instance with the Daigo option select is that the hitlag from hitting your opponent gives you enough time to input the shoryuken so that it won't buffer upon landing, but if you do not hit there will be no hitlag and the shoryuken will come out. As a smash bros player, I have to say that shit is crazy

  • for the meaty jab sweep option select do i input the meaty jab then input sweep really fast like at a 1 frame speed abit like a plink into jab? or is it like throw in the sweep in the link between 2 jabs

  • Holy sh*t! I've been looking for tutorials on Akuma's option selects for a loooooong time. Thank you for this!

  • Anyone who thinks these fighting merchanics are good doesn't know anything about fighting games. They are really bad!

  • What stops you from mashing all inputs at all times and having the game play like a pro for you? I seriously doubt a refined game like SF4 would allow for that to happen, so I must be missing something.

  • @Wolvenblaze Refined! this game ain't refined. Its a big downgrade in in sf fighting merchanics!

  • @nastynas9000 I don't play it much, so I assumed its huge following was due to it being a good game, lol. The downgrade isn't due to Option Select, is it?

  • @Wolvenblaze It has a huge following because it looks pretty and has some classic characters who people remember from street fighter. Believe me when I say (This aint a good street fighter game sequel.) The gameplay is bad, and a lot of the characters have been downgraded, and had a lot of there moves taken away from them! There is loads more factors why it is shit, but I'm tired of explaining to all these fan boys who think the game is good when it isn't!

  • @nastynas9000 Yeah the game is too technical now. It means casual players get raped by guys who spend 23hrs a day playing it. I enjoy the game but not when at this high end level.

  • @acwh79 SF4 is pretty simple to be honest, option selects have been around since Street Fighter II.

  • @lordofultima I never realised that. I figured it was from SF3 onwards.

  • more fundamentals yo

  • Also thanks for this video,it's really easy to understand and pretty much crucial to become better at SF4.

This and your Hit-confirming vid should be mandatory for newcomers to SF.

  • So in the situation of 0:53 can you mash out the crouching throw or must it be time perfectly to perform the option select?

  • @tuber123asd you could mash it out, yes. People online to it all the time. In person, you're not going to get away with it though -- so it's best not to expose yourself like that, just try to time it with the blue flash that blocking an attack shows, that's what I do anyway.

  • @lordofultima Thanks dude, much appreciated.

  • @lordofultima you mean time it with the block string? Like in sync with the block string? I usually mash, doesn't work? How do you punish that?

  • Dumb question @ 0:40 does that work in other fighters like say 3S?

  • @Jak00125 I know that option selects have been used in every Street Fighter since 2, but I'm not sure if crouch teching was doable in 3S, I never played it seriously enough to understand that stuff.

  • @lordofultima Crouch teching didnt work in 3S, its addition in 4 changed the Ken game completely from 3S where its absence made him a top tier

  • @Jak00125 It does work. The difference is that in 3s there is no auto-guard. If you try to OS with a normal that has longer start up than the next move used in the chain, you may eat it or trade.

The biggest OS in 3s is on wake-up, down-back + throw command will give you the option of blocking, parrying a low attack, or teching. The danger comes from the fact that everyone has a universal overhead that can be meatied into a super or combo, so they are not quite as safe as in 4.

  • @Jak00125

Yes, crouch teching is a huge part of 3S.

  • Not knowing this is probably why a) I suck at this game, b) it can be frustrating competitively and c) why I get thrown a lot/prevent throws from happening.

    Solution? I must train harder.

  • Excellent vid, thanks for taking the time to make it.

  • thanks for the vid.i had no idea this shit even existed. brings a whole other dimension to the game.

  • sorry for the srubby question but does this still applies to 3rdStrike?

  • What OS' do you see yourself using against Bison in Super (Akuma)? Safe jump OS LP seems alright but trades with EX PC (not sure if traded before), and I'm not sure how safe it is if he Teleports.

  • I just have a quick question with the tech throw, how do you do the third option without interrupting with a low kick?

  • Thanks for the explanation of Option Select. That and a safe jump, now it makes more sense.

  • Comment removed

  • Fantastic video! This helps quite a bit. Cheers!

  • Wow, FANTASTIC vid! This will help tremendously with my game.

  • excellent videos, love it

  • I learned the basics of option selecting a while back after seeing this video. I only do a handful of option selects, as I'm not very good at it. I normally use Cody, and try for a buffer of crouching LK into MK Ruffian or HP Criminal Upper. After practicing for a little bit, it just comes naturally. Now, it only seems like I'm tossing out LK, but if they get hit, they eat the special.

    Neat and helpful tutorial.

  • So the Daigo option select is useful when? When is it advised to use some other sort of safe jump OS?

  • @stormholloway The "daigo" Op/sel is the most common example of an option select, outside of crouch tech anyway. I demonstrated on two characters where it's very useful, toward the end of this video. Although Bison has a much better psycho crusher now that Super is out, so it may not be as applicable in that situation anymore.

  • @lordofultima ok, so it really just depends if your opponent can be safe jumped or not? I'm fresh to this stuff.

  • @stormholloway Yeah, the concept of an option select begins with a meaty/safe attack, so by all means practice safe jumps in general beforehand.

  • @lordofultima So if im trying to option select with akumas mk dive kick i need to input the srk after the k input or after the demon flip input?

  • @Obanization No tolerance for ignorance. Blocked.

  • @Obanization

You can keep trying to OS srk/ raging demon for a long time....LOL

  • i tried it out in training mode and i see what you mean now but you still have to time the tech right. mashing doesn't work. cool video

  • i don't totally understand crouch teching. can you explain it again please?

  • @sprinter223

    1. Crouch, and block down and back

    2. Hit throw while holding down and back

    3. Either a crouch jab or a crouching short kick should come out

    4. In order to tech a throw, you have to time the option select a little early, as in the split second right before they begin to throw

  • great vid... very easy to understand, i don't see how its not easy to understand... keep up the good work

  • Around the 3 minute mark in the video you say to input the shoryuken during the hit-stun of the jumping attack. When would you input the shoryuken if the jump attack whiffs?

  • ok so if i don't know how to do this can i still do good in a tournament

  • delayed throw beats crouching tech like no tomorrow

  • to any1 who still doesn't get what option selects are

basically u perform a quick series of commands that, while are the same each time u use the option select, the result while will b dictated by your opponents action. for examples watch the vid again

  • so you mash throw to either interrupt, continue blocking, or to tech right

  • Awesome video, I'm just getting into SSF4 and this is just what I needed to help my game along. Keep 'em coming!

  • I have a request. Can you do a plinking tutorial? Your tutorial doesn't suck and are pretty good.

  • i already knew what option select was before this but these videos are fun to watch because of how detailed they are. great stuff =)

  • good stuff, keep it coming

  • is this the pc version. the graphics look different

  • looking at the comments, u have to understand, it takes like a couple of practice to even do the crouching tech, dont expect to get it straight away. alot of times its pretty much knowing the basics and experimenting.

@lordofultima i find it quite a useful tut so no worries man.. cheers

  • Really enjoying these.

  • fuck i still dont have a clue of how to do option selects can anyone help

  • The Akuma sweep is a little different right because your input depends on the outcome right?

The first one the input was the same...crouch tech..and the outcome was determined by the action of the opp.

The Akuma version...you input sweep only if you blocked? And if aren't blocked you input the hurricane kick instead? So inputs are different...does that make it an option select still.

    Great video.

  • Its not working, im so frustrated after so many times that the tech throw option select does not work that i keep thinking of this video and rage.

  • @Craft2299 Crouch blocking is safer than stand blocking, so you can block crouched attacks and tech a throw simultaneously.

  • @Craft2299 If you MASH the thing of course it doesn't work, theres still some timing involved.

  • There are so much better Street Fighter 4 tutorials than this on Youtube.

  • i think you've done an awesome job with giving tips!

  • i get the last part, the daigo option, but an ultra would counter that wouldn't it?

  • i have trouble with balrogs when i play guy. this info seems useful i might try it against him.

  • I have a question on crouch teching: are you supose to be pressing the buttons in between the hits? Or do you tech throws upon reaction?

  • Real nice vid dude.

  • It is not mentioned that the crouching short that comes out from the Crouch Tech Option Select can have a very high risk, for a very low reward. This is because crouching short is much easier to be counter hit out of compared to throw (except in Dictator's case).

  • I still get thrown out and I don't mash, I don't know if they are just slow at grabbing or what but sometimes it works and somtimes it does'nt, and no I don't mash I try to time the blockstrings as instructed. Perhaps it's just online as in the tournys I play it works quite well.

  • Great stuff!

  • yes thank you sir, I feel I may actually try a character other than sim with some of this knowledge!

  • the world of street fighter is vast indeed!

  • nice tutorial.. but fuck this shit, I dont need it to crush people on xbox live

  • @DutchSchultz87 Like XBL even matters? You'll need to know how to option select tech grabs in tournaments or you'll be a scrub for life. But from what it sounds like you don't play in tournaments anyway.

  • GREAT video Lord!! This actually helps a lot. If I could request, time allowing and if you are willing, to do some more videos of this type. Just something to hight light the specific execution, does and don't. Option selects still require timing and some and a read on your opponent. The moment you look for is when there is a lull in a block string. It's split second but it's there.

  • btw LOH, from watching ~0:47, i can see that the correct input time for delayed crouch tech is not in rhythm with the jabs (so you'd do crouch tech in rhythm with the jabs), but rather slightly afterwards. like, if you got block stunned by 2 jabs, you don't want to press the crouch tech in rhythm so that it would be pressed at the same time with a 3rd jab, but rather slightly afterward. right?

  • @liluoke Yes. You time the crouch tech out of block stun.

You can't be thrown while in block stun from your opponent's move. You have to time your tech in rhythm to what would be a grab. If you do it too fast and they don't grab, you will be disadvantaged by leaving a very grab-able or counter-hit-able crouch short out there.

  • excellent vid
