To make the slots in plastic, trying using a blow torch to heat a large chisel red hot. Melt a slot with the hot chisel. Maybe stagger the slots so cracks don't form as quickly. I've used the hot chisel technique on painters buckets, hope it will work on the thick PVC pipe.
I copied your pattern pretty close with a few changes that I know everybody is not set up to do but I thought I would tell how I did it in case it helps somebody. I used a router with a 1/4 bit to make the slots for the straps. It worked out pretty well. Then I mounted it on a 2x4 frame and put a treadle on it. Now I can work the foot peddle at what speed I want and have both hands free to hold the chicken. .........and be sure to wear an apron of some kind :):) thanks for the vid and the idea.
Here's a thought: Depending on how much chicken you want to eat/freeze, it might be worthwhile to retrofit an old, washing machine with rubber fingers.
@stormbytes Yeah I have seen those on you tube...looks like it would work........ but a lot of work. maybe a later on project for me ....thanks for the comment!
@london1817 Thanks, I've got 28 chickens, and some have an Invitation to a Freezer nap soon, but some are laying eggs and have to find out who they are, as they aren't sticking around to brood the eggs yet.
@london1817 Hey Rick, Just an update to tell you that I followed your advice and built my own plucker. While I had some busted Bungee Cords laying around, I was able to find cords in the clearance bin at True Value store, although they weren't as wide as yours are. I drilled out 3/8ths holes, then rocked it back & forth to elongate the holes and round them off to lessen the chance of cracking. Fingers trimmed to 3" in 1.2" drill. Works Great I have Pictures, but exterior Links are disabled here
@Sonny9257 waste of time drilling all those holes and cutting pvc when you can get *real* ribbed fingers for next to nothing and it will do the job perfectly.
@stormbytes I've checked into the plucking fingers and they are Not next to Nothing and it seems that you still have to drill all those holes regardless. I'm not a commercial poultry processor, and only want to process a few birds every month. Something that I can use on a hand drill will work fine for me, even if it doesn't take all the feathers off, it will still save me the time of hand-plucking them. I have several busted bungie cords will try them first before buying anything more elaborate
@Sonny9257 Yeah I did some diggin on ebay myself. Seems they aren't as cheap as I thought! heh.. go figure. Anyhow, truth his.. if you're only processing 5-10 birds a month, you can't go wrong with *any* approach. Not much "efficiency" to add there.
Oh man... That's so cheap and awesome. Those damn things are expensive when you buy them ready made. I have a really temperamental plucker that won't do the job half the time..... I call her wife.
Nice, so it's a flapwheel that plucks and tenderizes chickens! : ) Just let the cat have 'em for 5 minutes, and you get it back with no feathers, and the head will be gone too, lol. -- Today my cats caught a rabbit, and eventually, Felix ate it like a chocolate bunny, head first! Not sure how much the kitten got, she probably caught it too.
Dude if your "Green" why not do it by hand. Do you know how many PVC plants you had to kill? And the electric/coal/oil /reserves you wasted on that drill. Those sun glass ate up mega oil resources. Oh my God, stop the madness. That's it PETA is coming to arrest you for eating chicken, unless it's GMO factory processed, inhumanly raised & butchered. We Americans can not stand for this "Natural/Independent" treatment of food sources. I'm reporting this attempt of freedom.
@madjimms The chickens Rick killed were meat birds. They don't get very old and are not used for egg production. I'd much rather eat a chicken I raised than to head down to the supermarket and buy a bird that has probably been pumped full of all sorts of hormones, ect.
@HawkLMT Thats how my dad has always been.....best way to learn that is from your dad! haha...we are
very lucky huh? haha......when I was a kid though...I remember thinkin all the time...."that will never work" but it usually did...LOL...I wish I was half as crafty as my dad!

@birdwing98 let me know how it works out...It would be best to drill it.

@london1817 Drill would be the way to go, rounded edge (radius) resists cracking
