@Dudeofmanyhobbies THey used to sell them as parts at LegoEducation, back when this was done. Now only in pneumatics parts packs that cost more. If I had to get them now I would look into bricklink.
the only problem is it can only do one function at a time, so you can't, for example, go forwards and raise the bulldozer blade at once. Also the mechanical complexity is really large, as well as the extra weight to build all of this you might as well use two NXT bricks. But it is very impressive that all this can be done with only one brick, that is true.
This point was covered( and known), though a limitation of operation, still adds function without need of many nxts. The point of the project was just to show it can be done. An operational linear switch in a Lego platform. Though now in 2011 the need for second or third NXT is mute, since the production of port splitter that now could run 100+ motors from a single NXT or sensors. An example of this would be my Bipeds have 11d0f, 1 nxt and no need for linear switching.
@sk8termattw Lots of Lego parts, all Lego. This was project was to show that 2 servos could produce many functions. Here 6 functions shown. Also was a few years ago.
@alex58733 True: one motor moves the other motor to power all other functions; a linear-switch. So in this test was to prove it could work in a real model.
The third motor runs the rotation of the gripper, the two motors on the linear switch run 6 functions as shown in video. That is why in this video the rotation was not shown, since it has nothing to do with the LS. One motor makes the LS run back and forth to engage the second at the right gear sector. To get stearing right/ left and forward/ reverse a semi Adder-subtractor is used with in the LS. But with Mindsensors new NXTMmx now you can just use servos, but at a cost.
Really cool. I would suggest the use of a gearing system to increase speed? I know by experience that the Mindstorms Servo Motors have enough torque to support a very sophisticated gearing system. I use the largest flat cog next to that tiny cog. Both are supplied in the Mindstorms NXT set.
Perhaps you are missing what is intended. The whole project is being run by a Linear Switch. One motors runs everything. The point was to show how with two motors could run many functions. Few working examples were ever built at this time, perhaps none. Why, easy to make a linear switch, hard to use it a working model. If you can make better please do, you can even use my ideas to start from, see my brickshelf for better detail. You could never build this from just a NXT set.
What set did you get the pneumatics from?

Good Work there!
Just started out Mindstorming with my son...its great fun. Did a "action" movie with NXT spike in premiere pro cs3. Watch it and see if u like it.
Peace

I like the pneumatics used in the claw. Much more efficient than a motor.
