@ToweringTimeTable On most silver brass instruments, sweat from your hands will very quickly wear off a lot of the lacquer, and the sexy silver will turn into an ugly copper color. Wearing gloves protects the horn, with many corps consider a 5-7 year investment.
As a former BD lead Sop (trumpet), this was one of the most fun parts of the summer - warm-up's before shows where fans get to sit inside the horn arch and get their faces ripped off. People do not realize how f'ing loud it is. Throughout the summer, one by one we would get to put our horn down and go out and listen to F-Tuning/Space Chords - it literally pushes you back! Thats why at this point in warm-up's, I always got a big smile, because I knew the fans were going to get a big treat!
Probably the best audio recording of ANY parking lot warmup. You can feel the power of that line and the hype these players had for this chart. I need to make this my alarm clock tune every morning with a huge speaker stack surrounding my bed! ........Each day could then start off with some awesome before breckfast.
One trumpet hangs over for half a second, and I can not even register how high he was playing! Awesome, I came in my pants, I can't wait to be a part of this Corp!
i dont even like Blue Devils, but I'll admit that was amazing....BD always has the best warm ups to watch. i still dont see how its possible that they can play that loud and high during warm ups and still have chops for the actual show...they must have chops of steel.
I marched Phantom Regiment. We had a strong horline. But I gotta admit I've always had a sweet spot for BD. That gave me goosebumps and jitters. Amazing.
Heres my analogy: if you somehow took the most power jet engine in the world and made it produce music, being here in this video would be like standing right behind that engine at full throttle. :) :)
The conductor has such the amazing privelage of conducting them. That alone is probably the most fulfilling thing ever, to be able to conduct them through that excercise/warmup.
BD....the sheer amazingness blows me away, litteraly, when they came to my school and we sat in the middle of the trumpet arc i thought my ears were going to EXPLODE with the amazing power of awesomeness comming out of their bells.
This is freaking amazing! I get chills every time i listen to it. One question tho. Can anyone tell me what that thing is at 2:04? I can't figure it out.
Lol. The chord isn't what i was talking about. If you look to the far left at 2:04 there's something that looks like a dog or something. That's what i was asking about. Thanks anyways =D
Drum corps is the only thing I know that can make ordinary people shit themselves while watching a group warm up. It happens all the time I have seen it and I have done it. Awesome
What has just amazed me (after the sheer quality of the performing) is how from 1:22 onwards, the conductor uses his fingers on his hand to dictate what type of chord to the musicians should play...
Look!! First he uses two fingers, and they play a major fifth - two notes. Does the same again, and then uses his full hand to get a full chord. At 1:55 he holds up one figure and the band all play the same note. Genius!!
Speaks volumes about the band, the fact that they play and notice that!!!!
I am well aware of corps - I used the term as in a band of musicians, which they still are... Either way, semantics. I'm not belittling the musicians or the musicianship - just a turn of phrase!!!
yeah- like I said BD will never change. It is funny though how horn lines have thier own personality through the years, go listen to BD '72, 79, 82, or whatever. Same stuff. I like it too. Just an observation from a Garfield Cadet.
My Band Director put it on bitching betty once (the woman counting) turned it all the way up and walked behind us standing with the Speaker on the hight of our heads...

Why do people wear marching gloves during practice in the summer? I'm suspecting its to keep their horn clean (?)

Yup. That was Scott Dean, the Blue Devils' soprano screamer-god, bringing The Word unto the people.
If you haven't yet, try searching him here on YouTube -- he gets special mention quite a bit.
The guy was made of iron, and played with great style too. I don't think I ever heard him sound less than fabulous, on the field or off.
Even with their bottomless talent pool, BD has had a hard time finding anyone who can step into Scott's verrrrrryy TALL platform shoes...lol...
