To be in HRT you must be a FBI Special Agent, and have served a minimum of 3 years in an FBI SWAT team (all major cities have an local FBI SWAT) in order to be even condidered to be in HRT. And even then its enormously difficult. FBI HRT is the United States #1 full time counter-terrorist unit. In 2003, members of the HRT were deployed on more than 200 missions worldwide, including to Afghanistan and Iraq.

All you need is three years tactical experience. That can come from the military, swat, or training. But still they arn't entirely made of former military operators.You also have to be a Special Agent.(its on the fbi site)

Almost all agents present or past in HRT have military experience. A lot are former Marines, and a few from the well-known special ops groups like Navy SEALS, etc. Most didn't go straight from military to FBI though. That's changing a bit now with their big recruitment efforts to get special warfare operators in to increase their "international" op. capabilities.

not true actually. Only about a third of the HRT guys have military exp. They have to have exp from a combat unit of the military OR have experience from police or FBI SWAT and be Special Agents for 2 years before they can apply for HRT

Actually, a regular special agent can join HRT. What you saw was their TAP program, Tactical something Program where SWAT or SF gets you through faster to go for selection. That involves a local, state, or federal SWAT team experience and such. However, SWAT isnt necessary. The reason being is after 9/11, they need HRT operators, and ones with experience, so rather than waiting for Special Agents that may be highly qualified to have to work for like 5 years, they can rush them through faster

The guy in the book was a writer or something in Washington, then he got called to try out for the FBI. He was a Special Agent I think and then after a few years tried out for the HRT and got in.
