@ArtifexCrastinus I don't recall the name, it's hard to find information on it. But essentially it is a protein-rich substance that comes out after they are born. They are larvae within their egg case, yes. They emerge as young roaches and they are white because they're not yet hardened, as many other insects. They will be white after molting for all their other stages as well.
@ArtifexCrastinus Cockroaches don't have a larval and pupae stage like maggots/flies, moths/caterpillars, grubs/beetles. They have a nymph stage, like grasshoppers, true bugs, dragonflies, etc. They don't need to pupate, a nymph simply goes through its last moult and an adult emerges.
@fonz626 It can depend on a lot of things, but most all of these guys made it. It's hard to tell, since I had several other females give birth around the same time.
Question: Does the mother die after giving birth? The reason I'm asking is mainly due to her almost comatose state where her movements consists of antennae twitching. Also, cool vid.
@ThreeKingsInABox Other than the contractions and twitching, she didn't move until they were all born, then she was very active afterward (if tired). She climbed down and ate a little then went under a log for a while, but lived for a long time after.
Hey, I really want to know if the mother dies or is only tired after giving birth! Very intresting, I've never seen that before....especially that an Insect is live hatching!
it's somehow comforting to know that one of the most well equipped, tough, tenacious and evolutionarily perfect animals on the planet still looks like a tired, beaten up sack of meat after she gives birth.
@ladyc30001 The abdomen becomes swollen and the segments spread a little to show the yellowish bands where they overlay. They also tend to push out their egg case and rotate it then pull it back in every now and again, presumably to ventilate them.
These videos were really fascinating to me. I feel more informed for watching it, even though I'm also trying to figure out where she kept all them babies, ha ha.
In pt.1, you replied that the mother "lived for quite a while after". How long was "a while"? Aside from that, it's great that you are making the effort to reply to every question and educating us. P/s: still dislike roaches though.
@AJNg420 I didn't have any adults die for about a year. It was hard to tell which one she was after she started acting more normally, as I had 50+ at the time and they mostly look the same.
WOW WOW WOW!!! That is incredible! With they way they were crawling on her (including the end of the first video), I figured she was allowing her babies to consume her body for sustenance as her ultimate sacrifice to them. That is very interesting. Thanks for posting!
I don't think I could ever keep cockroaches but I think they're fascinating. I never knew they gave live birth. Does she take care of her young after they're born for any period of time?
@trishthestalker They stayed under her for a few hours before they started wandering around and crawling under the other roaches, who greeted them with their antennae. :)

@stunashv People tend to judge such animals based on whatever they've observed from the media rather than making their own judgments based on facts. The media has always portrayed certain creepy-crawlies with such sensationalism; they're alien, freaky, disturbing, unnatural... but they're far more natural than we, & have existed unchanged long before we ever came around to say what's "weird" & what's "normal"! It's ignorant just how self-centered the human race can be.
i hate this type of insect, but i think that their white color makes them look pretty :) this video was very intresting and educational, i didn't know they gave birth this way and so many! I mean, my quesion is, where did she fit all of those inside?! It looked infinite :O
I usually really hate insects.. Like completely afraid.. But this has changed my mind! I watched the first part and had to see what happened next! This was fascinating, absolutely amazing! And educational haha
@caitiecoco I kept them, or gave some to friends. Most of my friends either also had an adoration/fascination for insects as well, or it grew on them over time of studying my critters :)
@pixiecupcake75 They're actually eating a nutrient-rich substance that comes out after birth, and is comparable to a mother's milk... only for insects :)
hello, thanks for sharing your video. i've managed to ask one who is familiar about these maddie hiss roaches and he answered in the negative. i was asking if it has that odor characteristic of the other roach species (the pest-type), what is your say? i'm terrified of crawlies but i think these fellas as very cute.
@832existentialiste I think the pest species only have an odor when they're wild/found in a home. When captive, they're cleaner and I don't think they have a strong smell at all. I've kept everything from pest species to tropical species, and they all have their own unique odor, but I find them all to be mild and rather pleasant, like moist dirt or moss. As long as you clean out any dead and keep the tank ventilated and free of mold, there shouldn't be an odor.
I could be wrong, but I want to say I read somewhere that what they're feeding on is their egg shells. Roaches don't give live births like mammals. What many roach species will do, however, is they'll incubate the eggs within their own bodies. Once the eggs begin hatching, they'll then "birth" the "babies". Of course they want to get rid of the egg shell, so that comes out as well and becomes the little ones' first meal.
Dawww they are so cute and so amazingly fast, its like they pop out and automatically go to climbing on the glass ..poor mommy has quite a hand full there
Holy crap the babies just expand like sponges being submerged after being birthed. In the beginning of the video the spawn are already at least 3x the size they were when they plopped out of their mother.
This is easily one of the most fascinating things I've ever seen. I had no idea there was ANY insect species that gave live birth; I thought they all laid eggs. Does the mother stay alive afterwards?

@PenanggalanMonster so the mom roach gives birth to her babies and then they go to the end of her and she gives them a liquid, that is COOL!!!I thought they were eating her like a spider
are you gonna keep all of em?

Is the "milk" closer to egg white in composition? Is it similar to the royal jelly of bees? Do happen to know the scientific name for the substance?
Also: do the roaches go through larval and pupal stages INSIDE the mother? The babies look like tiny albino adults, not like larvae.
