But i will say....as with every guitar, its all in the setup!!!...i have Edge Pro II and its insanely stable...and yup...tried heavier strings, but it just doesnt sound or feel slinky enough, which is part of the fun!!!. Ive owned a few jacksons in my time but i have to say that both are great, but ibanez are more....adjustable/tech friendly...(btw im a tech...lol)...just my $0.02..;-)
I set my guitars up a little different then this. I find that having the "trem" a little lower then what he says is level is best. Also my action would NEVER be as high as 2mm! especially on my 1527
so we're talking about breaking trem arms lower down teh page..ive broke about 5 or 6 in 20 years on my rg550..steve vai impersinations turned out to be the cause...i switched to pretending to be Yngwie and Et Viola no more broken bars...but then i got fat, held my mother in law at gunpoint and got arrested by the lapd in my dressing gown? what gauage of strings should i use to avoid that?
did you change gauge? like you used to use 0.9 strings and you switched to .10 without setting up the guitar? because that might be the reason of your problem
Very true. I went from 9-46 on my USA Ibanez to 9-42, doesn't seem like a big change but my luthier/tech said he had to do some serious tweaking just to get the Edge trem set up properly so it was dead on again. My advice: It's only like $40 for a pro setup, spend the cash and get it done right, you'll be glad you did in the long run.
Stays in tune, plays smooth. Beats the hell out of guessing, even if you get it lined up doesn't mean it's setup correctly.
@setapartkid Yeah me too. Just put tens on and reset the trem to be level and check your action to see if you need to adjust neck your truss rod. Going to 11's you will definately need to adjust the neck truss rod.
@saltywoody wut?a drop c tuning on a floyd will require fairly heavy strings..go and see what the bottom 6 of a pack of 7strings is like and then use the same as the bottom 6?
ur question didnt make loads of sense but i hope that helps...
if i was playing drop C i wouldnt..id use my 7string :-)
you have to put more pressure to the spring. usually it's done with screws on the back on the guitar behind the back plate but Rg prestiges have a practical one that you just turn with your finger.
you'll probably need to adjust the truss rod, and level the bridge. Whenever you change guages, you need to adjust your setup because it changes the pressure on the bridge. If you don't know how to do that, just go to a local guitar shop and ask them to show you. Some people would also put another spring on the trem system if they use a heavier guage regularily.
Well, they also don't recommend it because some of they're necks are very thin i think. I've got a fixed bridge RGA, and funny thing is that i have to push the low e string kinda hard to enter in the string mounting socket :)). Silly to think they didn't even imagine people would put .049 strings on them :))
well i had an experienced with a guitar that has a tremolo and i put 11 gauge strings and the tremolo just went upwards because the strings were waaayyy too resistant, they were d'addario's so i had to change them again for .9 gague strings but i really dont know if it works the same way with this guitar :S
Guitars are set up to the strings you use. String gauge is a HUGE factor due to difference in tension. You can't just switch from one gauge to another without having the guitar adjusted to the particular string gauge you use, even certain brand, because of the difference in core thickness used by different manufacture.
Change In String Gauge = Set up/Adjustment to the Instrument
And this applies to both trem or non-trem guitars.
Yep, you do. You do need a neck adjustment with a change in string gauge, along with trem adjustment.
For example, when you move to a heavier guage strings, the neck will bow, as in, you will get more curvature to the neck. It will change the way the guitar plays - the action may change, a note can fret out as you bend, and such. Thus, a need for a neck adjustment, preferably the guitar would be set up.
@dongypooh You have to use .009 because that's what its set up for. you need to go to a guitar shop or something for them to set it up for you. if you don't the trem leans forward into the guitar.
@Chaz6993X "...go to a guitar shop or something for them to set it up for you." You're basically reiterating my point. So, when you get one of these guitars, you're going to start using .009s when you actually prefer .010s? No, you get the guitar set up with a set of .010s. Many people don't use .009s. I don't use .009s either. If I get one of these guitars I'm putting .011s on. Ibanez people ain't going to tell me what string gauge I'm supposed to use. This video is misleading somewhat.
ignore both comments below me. 1st off the zr is made of cheap crap metal and the arm socket that holds the bar will break. prestige models are just glorified ibanez models. i've played a good prestige. i've played a great prestige. i've also played a horrible prestige. i've played lower end models that are just as good. the best tremolos by ibanez are edge and lo pro edge NOT edge pro or edge 3s hope this helps anyone
agreed once the edge 3 breaks it's done and you have to replace the entire system at least with the zr you can replace the arm socket but even then it'll just break again down the road. if you get a zr and replace the stock arm socket with an aftermarket one made of better metal THEN it's a great tremolo cause you never have to worry about knife edges wearing out. Vigier executes the ball bearing tremolos WAY better than Ibanez and they just take a real floyd rose and put ball bearing in it :)
@LateNightShredder i have a non prestige rgd and it NEVER goes out of tune no matter how i try to rape the trem... i only tune i to change tunnings lol
@Softairguy i have an edge on my jem.. i play for around 8 hours everyday.. it has been 4 months and it hasnt gone out of tune.. set up your shite correctly :)

this is rubbish i always remove all the strings when re-stringing how the fuck eles are you gonna clean the fretboard/neck properly????
there used to be a block/plate that you could put under the back of the trem for 6 string changes.....

that's fine but you can't change string without setting up the guitar... you either learn how to do it yourself or take it to a luthier...

The video should have said something like "use the same gauge you set your guitar up with".
dongypooh 2 years ago 18
Yeah, but Ibanez actually doesn't recommend too heavy strings. I still have 11's on mine tough :))
BurnElectric 2 years ago
Ibanez doesn't recommend heavy strings at standard tuning is because their trem block is short.
I use 011's as well. When I had a RG1570, I had it modified to have 4 springs on the trem - it wouldn't work with 3 springs on mine... =/
