literally had a patient's parent come in today & stated, "my baby has been running a fever" I asked how high has her fever been, she says, 103, I ask Axillary, temporal, or rectal...she says, "I don't know, I don't have a thermometer @ home, I just know she felt real hot"

I don't want to respond to this video.. I want to respond to all you irresponsible, unfeeling DOCTORS out there who commented on this. If this is how you respond to parents, I would hope you get your license taken away. Some people don't have the funds to go to a private practice, and yes some people are over protective, but you don't need to be a doctor if you don't want to do your job. SPS... lets all joke so that ONE that does have a serious issue doesn't go to the ER because of YOU!
@Audrey10174 People can't go to a doctor's office don't need to go to the ER to be seen for issues that would be best treated in a doctor's office. The ER is NOT the place for that. We have places for non-emergencies for people who have no money. They're called clinics. The ER is for EMERGENCIES. And If you can't go to a doctor's office for a non-emergency, you sure as hell can't go to the ER. Insurance almost never covers that shit, and it is really, really expensive.
Might actually be funny if it weren't so true. We used to have an unofficial diagnosis for this type of case - S.P.S. - Stupid Parent Syndrome. Sadly, you can treat just about anything - except stupid.
It's pretty true...I'm an ER doc and I see, perhaps, 1 truly ill child per year...the rest are runny noses, minor trauma, and other insignificant illnesses. Your kid's fever doesn't need an ER doctor, it needs tylenol, motrin, and rest. It's so tiring to see so many non-sick children. What else do people think fevers need? The hospital doesn't have anything but tylenol and motrin for fevers...you can buy that at the pharmacy.
@apeman115 when my daughter had a fever of 105, she woke me up crying. Some of us first time parents, will definitely rush our children to the hospital. Now I know that we're made fun of.
@JessdA7X Not really, we understand 1st time parents with a sick kid. people like the one in the video are the ones we despise: never follow directions or give the RX's to their kid..then blame everyone but themselves for their kid being sick.
@JessdA7X If your child had a fever of 105 they'd be extremely lethargic and VERY VERY sick. If this is truly the case, then YES..we want to see you in the ER. Sadly most "moms bringing kids in with fever" have A. not even measured the temp, and B. don't realize that if your baby is running around and has no other symptoms..it can wait until you get to your dr's office.
@JessdA7X If your kid really had a 105 temperature, you need to bring them to the hospital. That has nothing to do with first time parents. The issue is people who bring their kid in for a 100.5 fever instead of being bothered to follow common sense and medicate the kid for the fever if they're so worried about it. If the kid is that mildly ill, take him or her to the doctor's office, not the damn ER.
It amazes me what people will take a child into the doctor for.
However, our Peds group advises against medicating fevers generally.
I think that's fairly standard parental practice these days.
A fever is not in and of itself a sickness. So not medicating seems somewhat reasonable, since what WILL happen is that the triage nurse will record a normal temp. I've had it happen to me.
Of course, excepting tiny infants, people shouldn't go to the ER for a fever anyway.
@sidlesup treating a fever in a pediatric pt. is generally a smart idea. If the fever spikes too fast there is a risk of having a febrile seizure. ER's will generally medicate this population with tylenol.
@sidlesup It can cause febrile seizures or kill. Fever isn't a sickness? Neither is pain. But I'll bet you'll give your kid something for the pain if he falls and really hurts himself (even if the damage is not sufficient for a trip to the ER). Whether it's numbing spray or medication, it's reasonable to do so. A triage nurse will record the temperature as it appeared, the temperature you took, the method, and how much medication you gave and when. Give nurses a little credit.
Oh yes. Saw this one a lot. Halp! Halp! My baby has a high fever and is having febrile seizures because of it... ...no I didn't give her Tylenol...then you wouldn't be able to see how sick she is!
Typical, Parent's have not given tylenol or ibuprofen for the fever. They always use excuses to take off of work or blame the other parent. Yet they always have smokes and a cell phone. They always state that the cannot afford tylenol. What a crock of shit.
reminds me of the book "The Spirit Catches You and You Fall Down" by Anne Fadiman -- "What the doctors viewed as clinical efficiency the Hmong viewed as frosty arrogance."
good illustration of why both doctors and patients need to learn how to communicate better! thanks!
No nurse will tell them to sweat out a FEVER!seriously!

This is why seeing a doctor should not be covered by insurance. If people don't have to pay, they are much more likely to become hypochondriacs.
