Robert Mitchum was a great actor and a good singer too, but mostly I remember him for his scary roles. He was chilling in those. In Cape Fear he played a tough maniac on a quest for revenge against his former lawyer, who he felt abandoned him. In Night of the Hunter he was a religious nut with hate tattooed on one fist and love on the other. He was after kids in that one after killing their mother. Yes he was one scary dude.
@onebaud Sorry to disappoint you but in the original "cape fear" the lawyer did not have mitchum's caracter.as a client. He witnessed his crime and testified against him.... I know i'm late, my apologies.
I heard that Mitchum refused the offer to do the "Defiant Ones" with Sidney Poitier becuase he didn't want to do a film with a black man so Tony Curtis done it instead. I guess I wont be watching any Robert Mitchum movies from now on.
yeah but if you've seen the Defiant Ones, they are together for the whole film and in handcuffs for most of their scenes. He probably didn't want to do that with a black person. That's different to merely being in the same film as a black actor. He also said somewhere that america should nuke Vietnam and kill them all and he said it in a serious manner. Weird considering Vietnam never attacked america. I think he had a problem with "others", that is humans who aren't "white".
@xgs724 Well the problem with your comments is you say things like "I heard that Mitchum refused the offer..." and "He probably didn't want to do that with a black person," and "I think he had a problem with others... who aren't white."
Do you have any real evidence to back up what you're saying, that Mitchum was a racist, or are you just on here spouting off to get attention?
@xgs724 Mitchum had been on a chain gang in the south and he knew black and white prisoners were never chained together. The movie was a Hollywood version of a French film where the black character was instead Jewish. Stanley Kramer made this film to make a point but Mitchum was right.
@xgs724 Why don't you get some real fact and evidence before you start spouting bullshit about a terrific american actor who has more worth in his toe-nail then you have in your whole person.
@Nelsonhojax15~~ Mitchum turned down 'The Defiant Ones' 'cause he was already under contract to do 'Heaven Knows Mr Allison'...can't star in 2 at the same time! As it rurned out, 'The Defiant Ones ran long in shooting and post-production, and so they were not released in the same year. Mitchum wasn't racist...
@xgs724 No that story was based on a joke that he turned down the part for that reason and Brando turned it down because he wanted to play the black man and Kirk Douglas wanted to play both!
dont kid yourself: mitchum knew exactly how good he was: he took his job so seriously he NEVER let on how much it meant to him. The shadings he gave to his characters prove that. He did not just play bob Mitchum but the variations are so subtle you really have to look for them. He might just have been the most subtle american actor ever to grace the screen. Very intelligent guy.
When I was a youngster, the boys in my neighborhood had to get into a fight before they became best friends. The same is true with my friend who is now in his 70s. We had the good and we had the bad. I just heard the lady say: "Drinks all around on me and especially for the gentleman who has fallen down..." HA HA HA HA HAAAAA!!
Wow wasn't that interesting? I recognize but cannot identify the people commenting except for Sidney Pollack, Polly Bergen and Deborah Kerr. Can anyone help me? It's driving me crazy!
Yeah....Mitchum was a real man, not like the Cruises and Pitts and all the rest of todays nancy boys.....I reckon Mitchum, Wayne, Bronson and McQueen are having some fun whereever they are!
He brings a smile of admiration to me. He makes it look so easy. I wonder if Mr. Mitchum ever realized just how good an actor he really was. They don't make 'em like him anymore. He had what it takes, screen presence. No one elese mattered when he was up there.
Mitchum was the personification of the term, "sui generis."
Two (among many) of his movies stand out for me: Farewll My Lovely and Night of the Hunter ('55). The latter has now been recognized as one of the greatest films produced---Mitchum is fantastic in it.
Oh my, that story told by the lady at the end immediately made me fall in love with Robert Mitchum. I need to see more of his movies, because they look really good. So far the only one I've seen is Cape Fear, which is a brilliant piece with some eerie improv from Mitchum. Right scary that one is.
I adore Mr. Mitchum, but notice how his drinking is celebrated, and how everything we see on YouTube about Judy Garland is followed by 200 posts that say, "She was a drunk, wasn't she?"
Haven't yet seen this whole vid but maybe they speak about it here, but the true story about Mitch at some pub in London or somewhere, and just minding his own some big bloke steps up and whatever the aprticulars were, busts Mitch right sqaure in the face but Mitch barely moves. Mitch then says alright mate, now it's my turn and bloody knocked this poor big bugger backward down a flight of steps. True story.
When I was a movie extra I worked with several tough guys including Kirk Douglas, Burt Lancaster and Robert Mitchum. Robert Mitchum was by far the most fun. He was a good singer and he would tease the director if the director became too serious.
Oh Deborah. <3

@xgs724 Huh, that's funny. There are a number of other movies where Mitchum worked with black actors, so I find your comment hard to believe.
Bob Mitchum was a great American actor who never got the recognition he deserved.

steve12168 2 years ago
@steve12168 Why?

@Tabish29 I'm not absolutely sure why.
May have had something to do with the fact McQueen was a wife beater and Bronson a shit actor.
