The last time I saw Billy was at Ronnie Scot's,in London, it was rammed and we sat and stood in rapture. Got chatting to the guy next to me, turned out to be Pat Nevin ? Loved the Associates, Party Fears is in my top ten, forever. Thanks for putting this here.
My pleasure, one of my all time favourite bands as well. Billy as you probably know came from Dundee, where I grew up.
Pat Nevin ?! I knew from a music radio interview (which must have been some sort of Radio One version of Desert Island Discs) about the mid 80s that he was really into this sort of music. I remember in particular he was going on ecstatically about the Cocteau Twins. And who can blame him ?!
So being a Rangers fan, I instantly forgave him his sins of allegiance !
@roddy76to86 Pat Nevin was always that rarest of creatures, a footballer with taste in music and a very good brain to boot. I remember meeting Pat after training at Chelsea a few times. He was dressed more like Billy that Billy himself! Trilby hat and baggy suit. He seemed a very likable bloke. Always felt this song to be the highlight of Wild & Lonely LP. An LP, I think, that's actually improved with time. Contains some very strong melodies tho some of the arrangements could have been better
You don't say what part of the UK you're from, but I'm presuming somewhere in England. Well Pat Nevin can be seen and heard regularly on BBC Scotland as their regular football "pundit". And he always talks sense !
@roddy76to86 Yes, sarf London. Maybe I should explain, that when I say footballers, what I really mean is English footballers! Yeah, Pat also works as a pundit over here. What a mesmerising player he was. Like all wingers, he could b slightly erratic but on his day was a pure artist. Just like Billy. Also recall Pat championing the Durutti Column along with Cocteaus in Chelsea match programmes! I.m.o. Billy could have made interesting music with both Vini Reilly & Liz Frazer. Oh, & Roddy Frame
Well this brings me on to the late and brilliant Davie Cooper, who tragically died at 39 in 1995. I'm afraid even Pat Nevin couldn't match his skills, and I'm pretty sure he'd admit that. He played for Glasgow Rangers (my team !) for most of his career, but had stints with the now defunct Clydebank (who he was playing his last season with) and Motherwell. He was sheer genius on his day, but as you point out with wingers, had his off days, when he'd be called the "Moody Blue"!
@roddy76to86 Yeh, of course. I remember Davie Cooper. I had no idea he'd died. I'm sure I must have heard about it at the time but my memory is appalling. I recall him playing 4 Scotland. In my mind, I c him on the left wing but I could b thinking of John Robertson a very different kind of winger but very effective. I remember Rangers coming to the Bridge for our end of season friendly. No doubt must have seen Davie then too. Going back 2 those days, Scotland had some truly world class players.
Davie only had one foot, his left, but he didn't need the other one !
There are some great young players coming through now, so one can only hope for the future. But you're right about the past. I believe Scotland are the only team to actually qualify for 5 World Cups in a row (1974-90), as opposed to being hosts, past winners, etc. But it was maddening, they could never quite get through to the next round, and it was always by the slimmest of margins.
@roddy76to86 R u sure about that stat? Not even Brazil? That's amazing! Scotland were like the Chelsea of old. More than match the best and lose 2 teams they really shouldn't have. I know the English always make jokes about Scottish keepers but in all seriousness, can u imagine the difference a Peter Shilton would have made? I'm not really familiar with the current crop of Scottish players but Darren Fletcher is now v. important 2 Man U. I have 2 admit I didn't foresee him becoming this good
Yes, I'm almost certain. Brazil qualified automatically in 1974 as the World Cup holders. Alan Rough held the line for years, he made some horrific blunders, and some great saves. But he was the best available. Then at last we got a couple of great keepers, Jim Leighton (but who did a howler against Brazil in 1990) and then Andy Goram. Since then there's always been at least 2 or 3 good keepers to choose from. So the old Scottish keeper joke has finally been laid to rest !
@MisAnnThorpe Yeah, forgot about Gorham, wasn't he quite a colourful character? It's quite ironic really, because the goalkeepers position is the weak link in the England team now. Joe Hart's excellent but I can't see Capello making him No.1 for the World Cup. In the end, regardless of who's keeper, England won't win it. We just haven't the right mentality to win a knockout tournament. Anyway, can you imagine how unbearable we'd be if we did? Actually, even I don't want us to win it!
Goram was English ! But he had a Scottish parent, so the late Jock Stein brought him on in the 2nd half of a friendly at Hampden, to a rousing chorus from the crowd of "Your not English any more...!" He played for Rangers for some years, and was at his best against Celtic, pulling off some incredible saves to the point that Celtic thought they'd never beat him. That was when Rangers won "9 in a row" of Premier Leagues. I'd better not mention England, 1966 was enough to do anyone's head in !
@roddy76to86 Great Stuff! I remember him at Portsmouth and am I right in thinking he also played for Oldham? Something, tells me he was involved in some supposed scandal or other towards the end of his career, the details of which escape me totally. But yeah he was a good keeper. I've always been a bit odd when it comes to football. How many Englishman have a fondness for both Germany and Argentina? Brazil? Nah, not for me. And by the way, that ball didn't cross the bloody line in 66!
Have you got Scottish ancestry ?! Up here it really is supporting two teams: Scotland, and whoever's playing England ! But as long as there's no malice and plenty of humour behind it, then it's no problem.
Yes, I think Andy Goram was with Oldham when Jock Stein "seized" him; he was an astute manager. Then he moved to Hibernian for about 3 years before Rangers bought him. I don't know much about the scandal either, something to do with knocking off a woman (or women !) in a caravan !
@roddy76to86 Yeah that sounds familiar! I know football supporters r supposed 2 stay loyal but I stopped going 2 Chelsea around 89! I just couldn't stand (quite literally in the shed) being surrounded by ignorant, hypocritical racists. The abuse "our" black players got was sickening. My last game at SB was against Liverpool. They needed 2 win 2 b champions. Dalglish scored, they won & I saw some little kid in a Liverpool shirt with his dad, in amongst the Chelsea fans get pissed on. Not 4 me.
Well one would hope things have improved since then. In Glasgow of course it's your religion that counts, not your colour ! Rangers (as have Celtic) have been making big efforts to clamp down on sectarianism. Ibrox is a good place to go, and they have a family enclosure. The main problem that Rangers have are with their away support, many of whom are Protestant bigots over from Northern Ireland. These were mainly the arseholes that caused all that trouble in Manchester.
@roddy76to86 I have 2 say, as much as I enjoy a good match. I don't feel the same way about football I used 2. My mate reckons it started 2 go downhill around the time shirt sponsorship 1st appeared. I reckon he might have a point. U know, when I 1st started going 2 chelsea, I'd sometimes go to 3 matches a week. I was on a YTS!
Its not just the expense tho, i feel like football and other major sporting events are used as a decoy to divert our attention from far more important matters.
It's a different story in Scotland, there just isn't that kind of money. Ibrox holds about 50,000, but most of the seats are taken by season ticket holders for a fair price, and it guarantees the cash flow for Rangers. Their are some biggish teams like Hearts and Aberdeen, but nobody has challenged Rangers and Celtic for the League in years. A different story with the Cups though ! But the lack of constant top class opposition is definitely a major disadvantage in Europe.
well you could say it reminds you to some kind of cheese and it still would be as stupid as first comparesion..... sorry, but that's how i see it can't do nothing 'bout that one
It's an expression used in the UK, "comparing something like chalk and cheese". In other words, comparing two things that are completely different...like chalk and cheese, or Roxy Music and The Associates !
billy mackenzie will always be one of the greatest!!!!! flamingOmo is just misguided is all. to put associates in with roxy music is tantamount to EATING chalk and cheese!!!!
