Some things like these I feel proud of myself because I get, because I do physics and all... but at the same time, besides that the joke is rea.ly not that funny... maybe slightly amusing is the word for it.
It's tricky to see something that's moving away from you at c or higher. The red-shift due to the doppler effect becomes infinite. Though I guess it's possible that you may see some of the contour because of the light that hits him from the side and happens to scatter in the right direction.
@antiHUMANDesigns Damn, I just realized my mistake. He is still blocking the light that would otherwise have passed there, so he would appear as a black silhuette.
I'm also guessing there would be some form of optical effect around him, because of his increased mass? But I really don't know.
I love quantum mechanics, and I love Futurama. This is my favorite moment from the whole show. like andreww1212 said, it's brilliant and hilarious. They never cease to disappoint.
I heard about that cat theory, I just have a hard time understanding what it's about, only something that has to do with a paradox. Does anyone know another way of explaining it?
@Katana991 The cat is put in a box with a device that has a 50% chance of killing it. Once the box is closed the device is activated, but until the box opened you will not know whether the cat is alive of dead.
At this point the cat is said to be in a super position (both alive and dead), because neither outcome can be known. Once the box is opened you will know what happened collapsing these 2 possibilities into 1 definitive outcome.
@simonjeste No, no, you're confusing this with that other experiment, "If a tree falls on Gwyneth Paltrow in the woods and no one is around to hear it, does she make a noise?"
@ravekid23 Would it not be true to say that anything you cannot observe is in a super position, because you cannot know if a critical quantum event has occured to it, which might have changed its state?
In the event that you think I'm messing with you, let me tell you beforehand that I'm not. I really want an answer.
This is an invitation to see an artist theory on the physics of light and time!
This theory is based on two postulates
1. Is that the quantum wave particle function Ψ represents the forward passage of time ∆E ∆t ≥ h/2π itself
2. Is that Heisenberg’s Uncertainty Principle ∆×∆p×≥h/4π that is formed by the w- function is the same uncertainty we have with any future event that we can interact with turning the possible into the actual!
Except that Schrödinger didn't believe that a cat would be in a superposition of dead and alive. He invented this thought experiment in an attempt to ridicule quantum physics.
@SixtyNineWoodstock According to the laws of physics, it happened in both two minutes AND one minute fifty seven seconds; two minutes for Schrodinger, who was moving slightly faster than the speed of light, and one minute fifty seven seconds for Fry and the robot, who were going slower than the speed of light.
...Of course, I might have it a bit mixed up. I'm not a physicist. XD

@ravekid23 That sounds kind of cruel...

@ravekid23 I thought opening the box it was a 50% chance of finding a dead cat, and a 50% chance of finding Gwyneth Paltrow's severed head.

For all intents and purposes, the cat is simultaneously alive and dead within the box. Although, he was using this to justify killing cats.
