I think Lennons Fiance jab at McCartney was both an act of bashing and of love, cos even tho they werent getting along they were still mates in those good ol' days
I was lucky enough to be at this show. Sat in the first row of the blue seats right above the stage. This song, not I Wanna Hold Your Hand, is what got me hooked on the Beatles in '63. To hear John sing this song LIVE is still the greatest concert experience I've ever had. Miss you John!
@MiamiS1lvio You're very lucky! As far as I'm concerned,I saw Paul McCartney two months ago in Paris and he paid a tribute to his former friend by playing Give Peace A Chance among others.
Amazing that John has been dead almost 31 years and the Beatles are still so successful. Hard to think of anyone, in the secular world, who has been as successful as these guys, with such a lasting influence. No one can touch 'em.
@Brumerlover Second hottest selling artist of this decade (2000-2010) were The Beatles. Isn't that amazing? It's been so many years since they ever made a new song and yet.
Great moment. No matter the state of their personal relationship over the years, John and Paul always respected each other's songs, and this little nod from John made a nice olive branch.
@THeMaskedBlogCritic You bet I do! I also remember, as time went by, that I got a little scratch on the other side, and it was right at the end of "Philadelphia Freedom"...so it went like this: "....(scratch)-delphia Freedom, don't ya know that I lo-o-o-ove you, yes I do (scratch) -delphia Freedom, don't ya know that I lo-o-o-ove you, yes I do (scratch) -delphia Freedom...." and on and on and on lol
I was at this concert with an 8mm camera...I do not have a clue what is on that spool that is sitting in my closet. I never watched it!! I guess if I have anything with Lennon on it, I might be rich?? I also brought my cassette recorder to this concert and have the entire concert on probably 4 different cassettes, but it actually sounds pretty good..especially the song Grimsby and the long version of Rocket Man
@jeannie777 This song became the b -side of the PHILADELPHIA FREEDOM 45, then another uk had 2 songs on the 45 rpm (i think), then the full soundboard show is avaliable as a free downloadable bootleg, various books have pictures from this show (with Bernie), and a cd re issue of Here and There has the show. Others have taken there tapes, digitized them and posted them online for others to download. yours may be interesting to hear from the audience point of view. there is more...
A scorcher! Rusty as he was live, Lennon still belts this out. The reason for his appearance was that Elton bet him that Whatever Gets You Through The Night would be a number one in the US. Lennon didn't think it would be, and this was the forfeit - to appear live on stage with Elton. Well done Elton, you ought to have had a few more bets with Lennon ..... a fantastic night, shame there were only three numbers - I bet the crowd wished they would have gone on for another two hours .....
OK Beatle/John Fans: This song was the B-side to what A-side 45 rpm record? And when? Lots of comments, but EJ I believe was doing this song as a tribute during that tour, and it was a relatively easy rocker to work out with Lennon as a guest performer. It's loose, as intended. I tend to like the Beatles version better too.
@DonARen1950 Are you talking about the single released in 1963 with I Wanna Hold Your Hand on the A-side? Or an actual full album? Gotta admit, I know a ton about The Beatles and even more about John. Your quizzing question is a interesting one. :) I like it!
@jaidemm Hah! This was flipside of "Philadelphia Freedom". I spent years in the 70's/early 80's "servicing" about 100 jukeboxes. I ordered hot 45's for each location. I became familiar with Billboard, along with record distributors out of Miami. "Philadelphia" went in "Pop" locations & motels. When I went to count the money though, I played "Saw". I liked the "Meet The Beatles" version best with its hard-driving bass & heavy beat. Early Cavern version good, but rough--Best on drums?
John said "We did one of mine (Whatever Gets You Thru The Night) and one of Elton's (Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds, Elton's version had just been released as a single) so we needed a neutral one to finish the set. Elton wanted to do an old Beatles tune, and we both liked I Saw Her Standing There, so I thought 'why not?".
I was at this concert. Great night. Seeing Lennon live on stage ( at what turned out to be his last stage appearance ever ) was really special. RIP John. As long as music is played, you will be remembered and loved.
In a sense, we could say that if words have a meaning this means he really loved Paul a s a true friend as well as Paul loved John as he has been showing all these years...moreover around 74-75 they were close to be again together in studio...the point is that they weren't far from their breakup and John was always used to joke to protect his inner feelings...if he was still alive, who knows?
Lennon sings this far better than McCartney. The former had an edgier, more rock'n'roll voice than McCartney. For the same reason I would have loved to hear John sing Oh darlin'.
@MrJMD37: He performed live the following year (1975)...Concert for Lew Grade...it's on YouTube. He does "Slippin' and Slidin' ", plus "Imagine" (on guitar).
@pianorman 'Slippin' and slidin' was an absolute screamer - even after all those years, Lennon nails his colours to the mast as an out-an-out solid gold rocker.
Hi. I'd like to thank Elton and the boys for having me on tonight. We tried to think of a number to finish off with, so's I could get out of here and be sick. And we thought we'd do a number of an old estranged finacé of mine called Paul. This is one I never sang. It's an old Beatle number and we just about know it....
@RonnieFriend John and Paul always had a complicated relationship to say the least, esp post-Beatles break-up in the early 70's where it reached it's zenith. This was because of a variety of reasons, most of them (arguably) bc of things Paul did, like releasing his first solo record before Let It Be was released against the agreement the Beatles had with each other, the lawsuits the other three Beatles had against Paul over financial and managerial matters, and John not liking Paul's solo work
@aggremo - In all fairness to Paul, John Lennon performed live without the Beatles a few months before the announcement of the break-up. Read up on the history of the last days of The Beatles....John was not very cooperative at all. I love both John and Paul, neither one of them are without faults.
@deadcorpse12 John and Paul were actually on quite friendly terms at this point in time (1974), all of their legal disputes had been settles and Paul and Linda even came over to visit John and Yoko at the Dakota sometimes. John's wit just compelled him to refer to Paul as his "fiance" as a friendly jab at those who constantly asked him when the Beatles were going to get back together. His joke fits in the same vein as Yoko often jokingly referring to the other Beatles as the "In-Laws".
I was at this concert. Me and 2 friends bribed a ticket taker with $3 ($1 each) and he let us in. It probably looked like a lot more than 3 singles to him. This was Thanksgiving night. This was also the time when Kiki Dee had that hit song with Elton John. They did that song together earlier in the show, but when John Lennon came on, we went crazy! Since we didn't have our own seats, we kept moving around, but it was a blast!
@cathysoho I was also at this show. The Kiki Dee Band indeed opened for Elton, but I believe her hit song at that time was "I've Got the Music In Me."
4 tracks (Elton John & Band) were released as side 2 of the original vinyl version of Elton's album "Here and There" (side 1 was a concert in London). released in 1976. This track with John Lennon had actually been released first, as a B-Side to Elton' single in 1975 "Philadelphia Freedom." I bought it new then - and I still have that 7" vinyl 45! I used to play side two much more than side 1!
It seems that John Lennon was a person with many complexes or traumatized. It must have accustomed the public, on stage. He locked himself in a capsule, in his world, Yoko, and that was his undoing in the end. He had an enormous talent, I do not know if better than Paul McCartney, but certainly there would have been the Beatles or Paul McCartney of the Beatles without John Lennon
I don't think so. I've never seen any, even in all the offical documentaries of Elton John & John Lennon. Because this was actually John Lennon's LAST live performance, I'm sure if there were a video of it, we would have seen it by now! Too bad, huh?
