I don't know about anyone else, but I was taught in AFF that if you are not in control of your main parachute by your pre-determined decision altitude, get rid of it and deploy the reserve, and don't give it an inch longer. "Hoping" it would clear after that is too often a fatal mistake, a key fact that is clearly reiterated on every Safety Day I've ever been to. Awesome job!
Errr why did u cut away?? I'm pretty sure if you waited a few seconds longer (since u had some altitude) you could have recovered. Ud be amazed if you get on ur back risers what you could do :)
bummer it cleared right before the cutaway, insult to avoid injury, thats a new one! LOL, funny i had never seen a lineover that pinched clear itself so easily... bum luck
we can all say that the parachute was ok 1 sec before he released and deployed the reserve one but up there with high speed, bad canopy and secs to react he did what thought to be right. judging from the result which is he is alive it was the right call. maybe a more experienced skydiver would have sticked a bit longer to the main but good you are alive mate.
I agree! This looks like a classic "steering line lineover" and it was fixed right before the cutaway! But hey, each jump you walk away by your own food was a goog jump. So you now that your reserve works! ;-)
Hmmm was his canopy Square, Stable and Steerable? No, No, and NO! Looks to me that he did the right thing and lived. Basic AFF fundimentals here dude. See you in the obituaries dick.
I didn't see any control checks, no brake pumping... it looks to me like pumping the right toggle would have cleared it, but I could very well be wrong. Just seems like a cutaway that could have been easily avoided.
it was a lineover with a line twist...looks like it cleared after (i.e. because) he cutaway...the lines lost their tension after he cutaway, probably allowing the lineover to clear itself
Hey, that's my DZ!

looked like the line over and twist cleared right as you cut away.. right choice nonetheless

NIce! I had to chop a lineover on a tandem this past safety day. Maybe we should rename it USPA's annual Lineover Day.

"waiting to see if a lineover will clear" is a good way to get broke.
