i came upon this susprising video clip, I like the video, i agree with the izumilien, funeral practice is very similar, make the story short : we are one root.
peb tav txiv neej yawg taag lawm, yuav tsum xyum sau ntawv kuas thwj thwj, luas txhaj tsi thuam peb. the drum is call "nruag"...not "ntsuag". when you said 'qeej ntsuag', people would think that you mean "orphan qeej"...
Ah.. Hmong funerals now a days are so short that you don't even get to go through any of this any more. Pretty soon it'll be something of the past and forgotten all together. How sad huh.
Hmmm where are you from? Around here in the US Midwest, our funerals are still about 3 days, not including the week leading up the funeral with food, meetings, and preparations.
If you really want to go into traditional, It's 7 days. There's a story why 7 days. I made this video for all of us who'd not known. _www.youtube.com/watch?v=wSyOxmRHAyg
My grandfather was known as a legend in playing the Qeej instrument. He knows how to play over 100 hmong traditional stories. He was also known for his dance with the Qeej. Challengers from mountains afar came to battle him but no one could defeat him in Qeej battle dance to retain his title. He was also a famous shaman. When my grandfather past away in Thailand my father had a dream that the heaven's came and took him to play for the heaven's and earth.
can anyone explain what they are doing in 2:50-2:57 that part... as i haven't seen it here in the USA or in Loas? what are they doing?? did we lose that as part of our culture?? just curious... please explain... i'm very interest and would to know...
I ask my older brother and he says we just don't have time for it here no more cause back in laos when there was no war yet funeral lasted a week depended on who and what age they are. he said that my gramps lasted a week! everyting you see in here we do it back then too. I forgot what the holdings are for but he did told me..
oh yeah maybe now and days in the US...u know u gotta pay the funeral house so maybe they dont last a week cause maybe too much payments on it...??? i think..
Well, from what I can remember, all of the funerals I've attended fully, (My grandma-1998, grandpa-2005, grand-uncle-2000, and my MOTHER's-1999) were all about 5 days long. I'm sure that's considered close enough to be a week. I'm not sure I've heard of Hmong funerals lasting shorter than this...
True. I practice Qeej, and all the funerals i've gone to (more than 20+) have lasted at least 4 days (ex. Friday-start, Monday-buried). If the family was poor, It would have lasted at least 2 days.
That's a lawsuit waiting to happen if your boss refuses you from attending a funeral of a deceased loved one or relative. It's also discrimination of religion. So work is not, should not really be an excuse.
nothing has chang just that in america we don't have the time for it but in loas and thai its still practice with lots more people holding, thats the only differ in US cause we don't have the time because of work and ect!...
I see that the tradtion and rituals are still there and we are still practicing it until this very day. There may have been minor changes but everything still looks the same.

Qeej Ntsuag is written in Green. What the title says in White is "Qeej Nruag." You can even here it in the song.

True, but "Hmoob Qeej Ntsuag" is how the translator translated 苗家笙鼓. I want to honor that.
