No, it's because Disney were going to sue WWE for gimmick infringement. He looked too much like Captain Jack Sparrow
ECW is a epic failure and so is CM Punk. Burchill had a great gimmic and i miss him on TV because he was one of my favorite wrestlers and still is on OVW.
He could have been brawling with Kennedy and Orton but nooooooooooo, they turned him into a frikkin cartoon. They should have just made him a badass in the Stone Cold vein and put him on ECW. Imagine him and CM Punk feuding over the #1 contender spot and potential Triple Threat matches with Morrison. So much wasted time and potential cuz they want to try to get rub from a Johnny Depp movie. Thus...epic fail.
See, that's the thing. The pirate was over as hell. And The pirate movies are long gone, and if they brought it back, it would STILL be over as hell. We don't need another "bad ass" Stone Cold-like character. He did it as well as it's going to be done. He could still have amazing matches and be the problem. The only problem is he doesn't have the charisma on the mic to propel the character as far as it could go.
Finlay isn't a great talker but he gets over because of what he's capable of in the ring. Same with Benoit. Some people don't need to be great talkers to get over, that's what managers are for. Imagine if they put him with AAE or Ric Flair. Stone Cold was a dead fish until he got rid of The Ringmaster gimmick. Let fish swim, birds fly and you'd be surprised what happens when you let nature take it's place.
You're right about people with no mic skills getting over. I mean... Lesnar... Goldberg... Eesh. But for the pirate, you have to have a ton of charisma on the mic to make a very gimmicky character like that work. He had great in-ring charisma, and he moved the crowd well. If they gave him a mouthpiece or a partner who just hammed it up (Carlito, being from the Caribbean himself and currently buried), I think the pirate thing could be WAY more over than Ripper
