The "Mery christmas" spirit won in those days... Salute to the soldiers on both sides, They had the power, the spirit, to refuse all of the violence of their authorities at the Mary Christmas Eve 1914.
Thank you so much for posting this. I was on here, looking for Silent Night videos to share with my Family. My 3x Great Grandfather was Franz Gruber. We still have the (very) old Family Bible to read, but to hear the song in this context is amazing. Thank You.
inpired by the christmas spirit I'd like to show this video to my beloved friends with portuguese subtitles, but I'm not able to do that all by myself, because I cant understand the speech word by word.
My wife and I, with several friends, saw this performance at the Conferencs Center in Salt Lake City, Utah. Walter Cronkite said afterwards that the Choir and the setting at the Conference Center was something he'll always remember, as will all of us the night of this program. Wonderful.
I was in a choir last year in which the men performed this arrangement. Every single time we rehearsed this song, it was all I could do to maintain my composure; I have never had as difficult a time singing as I did then. This song is so incredible, the chords and harmonies so fragile and moving; it does much to recreate in the mind of the listerner the sweet and tender atmosphere that surely attended that night over 2,000 years ago in a stable in Bethlehem, when our Savior was born.
Oh wow!! So moving! Especially when the bass section comes in. So powerful! Stunning, amazing! I sound like a montage of critics in a movie trailer! Haha
all i can say is amzing that only 38,000 people have watched what can teach us so much about not just religion but war and our selfs.this shoulde be requiered in every school maybe we woulde end the madness.
Not gonna lie, I shed both tears of joy and sorrow at this. Joy for the transforming power of Christ's love, and sorrow that more people do not know about it.
This is such a beautiful story and told so lovingly - always brings tears to my eyes. If only the world could always find the peace and harmony of that night.
all i wish is that we woulde lern from all of our mistakes.some day i hope but after 2010 years i am optomistic at best. This is so touching i woulde think it wouldetouch the wourld. But it only finds enough to keep us at war.some day will come i belive it will.
He was a guest for the Christmas program. The Mormon Tabernacle Choir has a large Christmas program annually and always invites a special guest to take part (e.g., The King Singers, Angela Lansbury, Walter Cronkite, etc.). Most of these people are not LDS (Mormon).
hi, robconductor! it's almost christmas once again... and the story about this song is really very touching...thanks for this...could you (kindly) add a part 2 for this video? thanks...
I had family on both sides of the conflict. German and English. The only thing I found wrong with this presentation was that they showed American soldiers, they were not there until 1917, three years after the 1914 Christmas truce.
Boy, this video really gives one many reasons to cry. First of all, the quiet, contemplative atmosphere in which the performance takes place. Secondly, the songs themselves. I'm German and when the other singer "replied" to the first singer with the German lyrics of "Silent Night", I lost it. And last but not least: The soothing, kind voice of Walter Cronkite. Now we're heading into the first Christmas season in which this is a voice of the past. I'm extremely sad that he isn't among us anymore.
I agree! That was an extremely touching moment for me too. Brought tears to my eyes the first time I saw it. You should have seen the first part- there was another song they sang in German and I think partly in English too. It was BEAUTIFUL!! Nothing but male voices. Just gorgeous! I wish someone would post part 1 :(
I can't listen to this version of silent night without crying.....especially since they show the pictures of all those brave souls who fell during the war. The violinist is a tear jerker too.
When I was little my Mom used to sing "Silent Night" to me, before I would fall asleep( now I'm in my 40s ). This brings peace to my soul. THANK YOU!!
1 The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. 2 He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters. 3 He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his names sake.
4 Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me. 5 Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over. 6 Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the Lord for ever.
I think there is a movie about this incident. I wana watch it again. but i don't even remember it's name.

I also have family on both sides and I have heard my father talk about just such a truce in the trenches of the eastern front in WWII
I too lost it when the second 'soldier' sang Stille Nacht.
