Wall Street is really amazing film, true classic of the 80's. Michael Douglas and Charlie Sheen were brilliant but I didn't like Daryl Hannah. They should have put Kim Basinger, Michelle Pfeiffer or Kathleen Turner instead of her - 3 most successful actresses of the 80's.
When I was in school about 4 years ago (and even today) I would hear guys talk about how much they liked this movie and say things like, "Gordon Gekko is the shit! One day I'm gonna be just like him." And I would tell them, "I think you missed the point of the movie. That's not supposed to be a good thing."
The day wasn''t even half over and Gekko was already sending b-day cards to the shredder. Bud Fox saw this and then instantly dropped Bluestar on Gekko a few seconds later. People idolize characters like Gordon Gekko because they have power
People miss the point, Scarface is another example of people who look up to a main character who is nothing more than a greedy and selfish rejected corrupt sociopath
Oliver Stone begins filming Wall Street 2 this Summer 2009 with Michael Douglas confirmed
That's true, "Scarface" is another example! I can't understand why all these rappers idolize Tony Montana, he wasn't the most admirable movie character and I seriously doubt anybody wants to end up like that.
@C64b aint nothin wrong with being selfish or greedy long as you do it in moderation, niggas could give a fuck less about you, so if you got the power, u play by ya own rules, thats the way it is.
You should at Britain at the moment where press trash mogul Rupert Murdoch is finally taken to task + the professional slandering bitch tabloid "News Of The World" was FINALLY shut down.
Such immensely silly old bastards +would-be mashers like Murdoch or Berlusconi spoil whole societies, but hardly anyone in Europe is afraid to call them mafia-like criminals.
We Germans may have a dark past 70 years ago, but we do not envy the British because of their absurd + corrupt tabloid press.
@krogdog@krogdog You make a very good point. This movie is actually a jaded morality play. Like King Lear who must suffer to extremes in order to gain his humanity the 'rookie' must face similar if not more contemporary success and failure in order to realize his humanity. He goes to jail. He bends the rules in what appears to be a good cause, to save a company worth saving. Does the end justify the means?
@krogdog:You can draw a parallel between Gekko-like maniacs + the absurd (+ hopefully final) end of Rupert Murdoch in Britain who had to shut down his slandering bitch tabloid "News Of The World" because of illegal (telephone) spying by its journalists" united with corrupt police officers on British prominents+politicians of all parties - the difference between Murdoch + Berlusconi is, that Murdoch really seems to be a silly old heterosexual bastard while Berlusconi (still) knows what he does.
