murve says - spent 18 months on this wonderful tropic island, white fine sand beaches, climate is one of the best in the world , infrastructure just so first world, locals are just so friendly, great party atmosphere..sorry, must have been thinking about Barbados.
This place is like a corrupt shit hole with a bunch of ex- Soviet twats frightening the hell out of the local peasants.

i dont live there anymore but visit it often. its good man. populations grows, more stuff available, more foreigners :) You can get anything you want as long as you got money. Forget those days when stuff they had in Moscow was unavailable to sakhalin ppl. Yuzhno Sakhalinsk is a real modern city. They even have Hooters and full size malls. And what about government? We, russians, love it just how it is and dont want foreigners talk crap about it, its not their business

Aproximate population of only SOUTHERN sakhalin is 4 million people. just because you saw little village in the video doesnt mean entire island is like that. And gas isnt the only way to make money, you can find lots of well paid jobs as long as you have education.

This documentary is true. The problem is that Moscow takes away a very large part of finances coming from this project. The remaining crumbs are being misappropriated by the local corrupted authorities.

never heard of the situation that theyre restricted to use water. it was meaningful that russia government bought the anti earthquake measures from the japan company. this fact implies that russia will refuse any japan request for selling energy from sakhalin. plus the residents used "steal energy" in this video. im so shocked.

Ndrakey please correct me if I am wrong, but Moscow forgot Sakhalin existed, the wood paper mills built by the Japanese are closed, Western Russia does not eat Sakhalin fish products, & part of Sakhalin is completely polluted by nerve agents sprayed by the Soviet Army. So the western oil companies are the bad guys?

o yes, you are verry wrong. moscow eats lots and lots of sakhalin fish and other sea products. most gas comes from sakhalin too. Sakahlin is very important for russia. before americans came, russian gaz companys was working there. Now americans are drilling oil and taking gas for their companies. The biggest problem is that all gas workers were fired.

On Sakhalin I have seen ships, a bus, cars, & the entire contents of someones bathroom, all dumped on the beaches. I have seen everything from plastic bottles to tanks & locomotives dumped. The fish factories take the red caviar from the salmon & dump the fish in the forests. They collect the salmon from the fishing villages in open army trucks & they loose $100s of fish because they fall out the trucks. But the oil companies are the polluters! Are the makers of this film blind or stupid?

The Western Construction Company I worked for lost $20m. We had to donate a 6 figure some to the Sakhalin fund. Where did it go? Why do most Sakhaliners live in poverty when a minority live on the outskirts of Yuzhno in luxury houses some even with indoor heated swimming pools. In the UK we do not put gas supplies into wooden buildings and blocks made from precast concrete panel construction. Look up the Rowan Point Disaster & you will see why. So why even suggest Korsakov needs gas when for 50 years they have survived with electricity?

We paid our workers & gave them language classes. The foreigners bought jobs. The wood pulp factories are closed & falling down. There is no bridge to the mainland. The Russians in the west eat imported fish because it takes too long for Sakhalin fish to get to western Russia. Not all of us hung out in the Mishka pub. Some of us explored. Some of love it & miss Sakahlin every day of our lives

It is Russians who are stealing from the mouths of ordinary people in Sakhalin. TSS construction did not pay their workers for 3 months when they did they got 30% of their pay. My mates & I gave $100 to a pregnant Russian girl who was leaving to have a baby & the TSS bastards refused to pay her. Her Russian husband had left her. TSS named their price & we had to pay. Other contractors were too scared to come on our site. Boris Egorenkov even hit me Twice.

I lived in Sakhalin for 2years. The Russian Government & the local people in power have pocketed all the money. Why blame the foreigners? They were screwed. They paid for removal of bombs, dumped chemical weapons, & 2 dump nuclear reactors, cleaned up the Rogatka River in Yuzhno (we took 3 cars out of that, plus 3 oil cans I personally removed), & funded the British Council educational facilities. They even donated $6m to rebuild the roads of Yuzhno & the local government tried to pocket it
