the trains are capable of 60 MPH they install the govenor on all the trains so the train can only go 45MPH at max speed with Govenor on. the monorail Train at Disneland California only goes 35 MPH.
in 1970s at Disneyland California they had the same incident whare the high school Graduate got killed by the Monorail when he was usuing the track to sneek into Disneyland,

I have ridden with Monorail pilot Austin Wuennenberg. He was obviously very proud of being a monorail pilot. Since we were going to the Contemporary and we were the last passengers of the night Austin told us we would do a very rare no-stop fly-by of the Magic kingdom platform. This was a highlight of our trip. Austin Wuennenberg was kind, friendly, outgoing and professional. All my sympathy to his family. Austin, we will miss you.
Im glad you guys left when told but this shows that while the World is a messed up place, people do care about other people. RIP driver, that was a sad day in WDW.

@newsfanatic1000 The two monorails involved in the accident were Pink and Purple. Coral is still there, it was just turned into the "Tronorail" for 2010. It is currently being turned back in to Monorail Coral and should return sometime around the end of August/beginning of September. The working parts of Monorail Pink and Purple were combined into Monorail Teal. There was supposed to be another replacement monorail but two years later it was never made.

Please have respect for Austin and his family. This was a horrible accident. I was there over the 4th of July weekend when it happened. Disney has a very good safety record, and accidents can happen at any work place that employs as many people as they do.

To say it was the drivers fault is stupid. Those trains run on a ATC which is a computer driving the train the computer is controlled by someone in a controll room it was that persons fault why the train crash no the driver. The control on both vehicles you mentioned is in the hands of a human being...a human being on the same machine as all its passengers.
The people who operate these cars go through plenty of training on what and what not to do. Someone here, in control of the cars, made a retarded mistake and got either themselves, or someone else, killed.

The video shot by the person has been viewed over 181,891 times. That alone tells you that many people want to see this. I believe that AlfromNL was within his rights to video it and distribute it. Disney not only allows photos and videos but encourages it. How many places can you buy film or SD cards in the parks? It actually shows what steps WDW was taking and could lead to new ideas for safety. What if there was a large pry bar handy? Could the driver have been given medical treatment?
The Monorail is still one ot the safest modes of transportation. Disney's Monorails make hundreds of trips a day and can hold up to 300 people on one trip. It is a horrable accident and it sent shockwaves through the Disney company. He will be missed.
I went to Disney last year and we asked if I could drive the monorail and the guy said no my step dad asked why he said there was a crash and he cried because it was his best freind

@AlfromNL actually what happened is the pink train was on the epcot rail and it was supposed to go onto the magic kingdom line but the track didn't switch so it went the other way on the epcot line instead of on the magic kingdom line and another one was on the epcot line and they both came at each other and crashed

All monorails have a system on board that stops the monorail if it gets too close to another one. However, this system is shut down at night so the monorails can be stored. The man who was driving the monorail had fallen asleep while driving the monorail, which did not have the emergency stop system on. And that was why.
@stopfidgetting It was not the Monorail operator's fault, it was the person in the control room, he did not switch the tracks properly, causing this accident.
thats so sad, RIP austin. it still freaks me out that i took a picture of the front of monorail purple 2days before this happened. i think its great the guests stayed there to try and help out.
Thanks for the upload. The driver was not texting by the way. When they found the driver he saw the other train coming and tried to put the Monorail in reverse but it was too late by then. He was switching tracks, and accidently went the wrong way around the track. A mistake any new comer could have made. This was not a result of texting or talking on the phone. Now no one can sit in the front seat of the monorail :( such an unfortunate event with an even more unfortunate outcome.

The control on both vehicles you mentioned is in the hands of a human being...a human being on the same machine as all its passengers.
The people who operate these cars go through plenty of training on what and what not to do. Someone here, in control of the cars, made a retarded mistake and got either themselves, or someone else, killed.
As for those "out of control" Toyotas: look, I don't like those cars, but did any of you morons think of SHIFTING INTO NEUTRAL?

The video shot by the person has been viewed over 181,891 times. That alone tells you that many people want to see this. I believe that AlfromNL was within his rights to video it and distribute it. Disney not only allows photos and videos but encourages it. How many places can you buy film or SD cards in the parks? It actually shows what steps WDW was taking and could lead to new ideas for safety. What if there was a large pry bar handy? Could the driver have been given medical treatment?

The Monorail is still one ot the safest modes of transportation. Disney's Monorails make hundreds of trips a day and can hold up to 300 people on one trip. It is a horrable accident and it sent shockwaves through the Disney company. He will be missed.

I went to Disney last year and we asked if I could drive the monorail and the guy said no my step dad asked why he said there was a crash and he cried because it was his best freind

for the person that posted this i truly think you should remove it. and for the people commenting saying it was the drivers fault cause he was texting your way wrong. the driver wasn't texting the person who cause this was the person in the control room of the tracks that person was left in charge of switching the tracks and wasnt properly trained to do so.
the driver's name was austin he was a college program participant show some respect.

@AlfromNL Erm.. to be right you need your facts right austin was the driver that died becuase the pink train missed the animal kingdom rail and went back on the epcot rail tthe it went beck words and crashed into the blue train :P only austin died others was hurt or sent to the hospital.

@AlfromNL actually what happened is the pink train was on the epcot rail and it was supposed to go onto the magic kingdom line but the track didn't switch so it went the other way on the epcot line instead of on the magic kingdom line and another one was on the epcot line and they both came at each other and crashed

@AlfromNL The blue train WAS involved. The blue and pink trains crashed. If you watched the video, you would see that. Also, there is no Animal Kingdom Track. Austin died and he was just released from CP. ( This was aimed at legogirl)

@TheFlipVlogs That is actually not why the monorails crashed.
All monorails have a system on board that stops the monorail if it gets too close to another one. However, this system is shut down at night so the monorails can be stored. The man who was driving the monorail had fallen asleep while driving the monorail, which did not have the emergency stop system on. And that was why.

@stopfidgetting It was not the Monorail operator's fault, it was the person in the control room, he did not switch the tracks properly, causing this accident.

thats so sad, RIP austin. it still freaks me out that i took a picture of the front of monorail purple 2days before this happened. i think its great the guests stayed there to try and help out.

Thanks for the upload. The driver was not texting by the way. When they found the driver he saw the other train coming and tried to put the Monorail in reverse but it was too late by then. He was switching tracks, and accidently went the wrong way around the track. A mistake any new comer could have made. This was not a result of texting or talking on the phone. Now no one can sit in the front seat of the monorail :( such an unfortunate event with an even more unfortunate outcome.

Not paying attention, texting, talking on phone, playing ds, overdosing, drinking, waving to the vehicle you are about to crash into and giving puppet shows are bad ideas!
Just focus on the road/trad and be aware of other traffic!
