  • The sad thing is that Americans don't even know who their presidents are... :\

  • @Myneighbortotoro21 says you. im sorry your school system fails.

  • WTF do you think american, specialy US Amerikans, know who the 64th Tenno was or where berlin is? No way...know alot of US amerikans and whene they ask me where i am from and i say germany-berlin. they ask: oh europa right?

Do not act like japanese do not know anything about other cultures or countrys. They know much more then wester people!

  • Research the origin of the word "foreign" and you will soon find out it means "on the outside"....hmmmm...I can't stand people who babble uneducated rubbish.

  • @sooper2dooper3 But the meaning of the words have changed. If you call someone a "foreigner" It means that they are from somewhere else, but if you called someone and "outsider" it does mean that they don't fit or belong. "You are an outsider" sound very harsh compared to "You are a foreigner". She is just saying that Japanese still call other people "Outsiders"

  • "proudful????" ...no wonder the Japanese are so bad at English.

  • @sooper2dooper3 I think you misheard her, It sounded a lot to me like she said prideful.

  • cute!!

  • I liked this vid. You're good at explaining things. One thing though; you mentioned that the Japanese don't know "most of the American presidents" or where Quebec is... and I just thought I should point out that, as a Swedish student, I didn't learn much about the American presidents in school and very little about Canada - and I'd bet you don't know very much about Sweden. Just thought I should mention that "American presidents" don't fall under every country's idea of general knowledge :)

  • well then i need to head over to japan wait til they get a gander at this latin spice ;) lolz

  • Ho would they treat a hijabi? As in someone who wears a head scarf? :D

  • I'm Chinese :( no foreign "respect" XD

  • You just don't want to be considered a "Henna Gaijin!"

  • The very fact you seemed it obsurd for the japanese to not know about US presidents.... i mean... why would they? Why would any country other than america need to know the history of US presidents?

  • @mwhite1994 its called world history....

  • Just FYI no other country apart from America cares about the history of American presidents enough to teach it. The same way you don't learn about Korean leaders.

  • @mwhite1994 I've lived in Germany, and they learned about US History. Your argument is invalid.

  • @mwhite1994 many countries learn a lot about the US because their governments make it obligatory.

  • @mwhite1994 knowing about everyones different cultures and languages could bring us all world piece one day.

  • @heats1 but first we must conquer spelling and homophones. Peace*

What I'm saying is that it's very arrogant to assume others are naive or uneducated for not knowing the specifics of another, foreign country's politics, when that countries people, similarly, are not taught about countries other than themself.

  • @mwhite1994 yea sorry i meant peace. My "smart" phone likes to auto correct.

  • Do you speak Japanese?

  • @Nnovata Its not that bad I went to japan myself for my senior year with my japanese class that I had been in for 3 years + studying on the side + my aunt works as a english teacher in a japanese high school that also allowed me to get into the foreign exchange program a whole lot easier..... Bullying is not like how u see in manga's etc those situations are VERY rare most of the time those bullying situations happen are just there to add drama and a story to anime/manga/visual novel games.....

  • quebec !! im from quebec i live here i wanna go to japan really badlyy !!

  • What about for other races? Many white people go and are treated well, but I haven't heard of others' experiences.

  • Some Japanese are so moraly juvenile, they don't understand what racism is. This is not an excuse. It actually makes it worse.

Japan is still an insular conservative right wing country. People here say foreigners need to adjust to Japan. But Japan wants to be part of the rest of the world, don't they. That means Japan has to adapt to the rest of the world. Human rights are universal. If Japanese cultire difers then Japanese culture is wrong and has to change.

  • @Prometheus4096 lol japan does its own thing they can careless about merging with the outside world there culture is much better than amerca's in almost every way.... and so you want to say ALL culture should be the same? lol so you want everyone to act like a gray blob... boy your very unique of a person just one of those people who listen to main-stream music because the commercials tell you to? *note im using this as an example of your seemingly lets all be the same gray blobs theory...*

  • @killyourselfpleasety

I can't even tell if I can't understand your comment because of limited English on your part or if it is just incomprehensible by itself.

All humans are 'the same' so all culture has to be 'the same'. Don't put words in my mouth beyond that obvious point. Don't straw man it.

  • how is the bullying there between boys, girls and both?

  • i wanna go to japan soooo bad! can u b my tour guide!? lol i shall pay u n fast food! :p

  • OK I guess I should go pack my EU ass ....

  • I want to go soooo bad but I have blonde hAir blue eyes...I would stand out so much lol

  • Well said, great video K! Thumbs up to your video. I think most "Gaijin's" forget the realization that Japan is less diversified then Westernized countries. Japan's an honorable, very reserved, and nearly crime less culture that avoid's confrontation. Let's face it, we're quite the opposite! Put yourself in their shoes. Is it racism? No. I'm Japanese-American and believe me, I sense indifference as well. Sometimes worse/disgraceful as it is frowned upon for some who do not know the language.

  • Just a difference in culture. Many "Gaijin's" move abroad with the expectations of "a better life", "school/work", "a partner/sex", or "anime/cosplay" without any regards to the culture. Remember, "your" the foreigner! Japan doesn't accommodate "you" ("you" accommodate to live in Japan). Realistically, it's the foreigner's responsibility "to know better", not Japan. Learning and understanding the culture will give a better insight of what our ignorance calls "racism".

  • yeah gonna go get me some japanese babes!

  • ur realy good at explaning, if u know what i mean. i realy want to visit japan, sinse im a bit japanese, i realy want to know more, and i was really worried about being a gajing. so thanks ))

  • I really love watching your vlogs, you're such an interesting person and just the way you explain things is really entertaining and informative..You're very positive as well...~ ^^

  • Nice video. Thanks for sharing your opinion with us.

  • Quebec? French Canadian province.

  • @kelphyr yes

  • your haircut looked great here you look smart too

  • I REALLY think it's great that you tell how you experienced Japan and the people!!!

  • Not everyone has black eyes and hair!!! Most of my friends have brown-ish hair and some os them have brown eyes !!!! ( I WAS BORN IN JAPAN, I'VE LIVED IN JAPAN MY WHOLE LIFE I THINK I KNOW MORE THAN YOU ON THIS!!)

    P.S.

the 4 main japanese islands : hokkaidou , honshu , shikoku , kyushyu

the current prime minister : Mr. Naoto Kan

  • lol if thats the case then I would be a celebrity in japan haha!

  • I'm still a bit worried about how people would react to a fat person in Japan since I've seen how openly they make sitcoms about "デブs" .. I lived in japan for a WHILE and I didnt at least experience anything like that (well I'm not really really obese, just chubby) but since I'm applying there for exchange next year I've been going to gym everyday ^^'' so should I be really worried...? (' ^ ')

ps your videos are great ^o^

  • if youreally bite let tell you I taste yummy! xD

  • you look really cute!

  • hey kat thanks for the video. its helping me prepare for when i move to japan. im starting a vlog of my own and i leave next month :D

  • im english and i know nothing about american history or anything

    i live in japan

and believe me they are not scared of foreign people

  • im english and i know nothing about american history or anything

  • That little bit about Quebec was funny. That's where I live and I get Americans asking me all the time where that is. It's like....durr Canada.

  • what would happen if they knew i was born in Mexico, that I came to live here making my self Mexican-American when i was 10 and that i have french heritage?

  • 3:10 - 3:20 :D

  • @belita101

    a. I'm not spreading lies, I'm spreading my opinion based off of many observations that I've made.

    b. I was in Japan for an entire year, going to school, living with a Japanese family, and you're trying to tell me that you know more about the Japanese than I do by being on an online language course?

    c. There are definitely some Japanese that are very well informed about foreign cultures. However, as my Japanese Host-Father said, the majority unfortunately isn't.

  • @katrandom Got- em

  • @belita101 Perhaps, before you go on an accusatory rant, riddled with belittling phrases (ie "little girl,") you should brush up on your punctuation. Also, it surprises me that you're enrolled in a Japanese online language course -- and yet you haven't seemed to have mastered English yet. I believe, little girl, that you're putting the cart before the horse.

Also -- just because your Sensei (if what you say is true) knows about the Revolution - doesn't mean all do.

  • oh and lol at the racial heircharcy suggested in this video. because we all know whites are superior to all.

  • "People here don't learn about foreign cultures or their history."

That, right there is something the U.S. and Japan have in common. I am one of the only Americans I know with knowledge in more than one language, and have any familiarity with foreign cultures.

I'd love to study in Japan, only thing I am worried about is, my Russian heritage. You are Austrian-American, Kat, I am Russian-American with some Lithuanian thrown in. And I have heard Japan doesn't look too kindly on Russia.

  • I'm a future japan foreign exchange student and this video made my day xD

  • Comment removed

  • I have a question probably a bit late. What if I have black hair and black eyes. (Ok i'm asian.) How will I be treated? Will I still be on the level of a foreign looser? xD

  • @i8thefood

Try having long brown hair with big ol' grey eyes.

  • your haircut was super here and you looked very smart

  • "haha i bite. " any way iamm going tio japan on with my friend who is gonig on some sort of work student extainge thing idk she but she wont have a host family, can you recomend some easy ways to learn the cultures and launanges? oh boy i think iam screwed becuse i cant even spell words in english.

  • I explained to her I'm from the Netherlands. She asked is that in Germany so I told her no it's next to it. She didn't understand and it was hard to do so. (while in the back of my mind a little voice said: Holanda so I thought heck no that's Spanish or so she'd never understand that while the Japanese word is Oranda or so... myeah should have listened to my mind).

Later when I had some Jap intrnet frnds. One of them even explained to me that the Netherlands & Japan have a long history together.

  • I noticed Japanese people don't know much about the rest of the world okay not so super much.

When I was 13 years old we went to Germany like every year kind of... (I'm half German) and the city we visited had a lot of tourists my mom already told me they where Japanese. Back than my curiousity for that land kind of started so while sitting at a place to play I helped this little Japanese girl and started talking to her mother she told me she was indeed from Japan. So she asked about me and ...

  • lol what would happen if they saw a foreign cool guy? XD

  • Im a loser from where i come from (Northern Ireland) so to know that i get bumped up on the scale of loser to cool makes me even more excited for my holiday in japan next year!

  • Japan is the only country on earth that still uses signs that says no foreigners, but its no big deal.

  • Racism is something that every country deals with in their own manner. I call Japan the "Curious Country" meaning there curious about foreigners to a degree.

  • Hey. I'm a foreign loser but I wasn't treated like a king when I was in Tokyo. I was ignored like everyone else. You are perpetrating the biggest stereotypes about Charisma Man there. By the way how did you realize those guys were losers just by looking at them?

  • I like this video. So how about a very cool guy from the West? Will he be the epitome of cool in Japan? :P

  • foreigner losers must be happy

  • lolol I'm planning on going to japan 2011-2012 I laugh cause I'm like the opposite of the japenese brown hair blue eyes 6' 2" 13 shoes lolol

  • lol well Japanese people respect others a lot. plus nodding heads is a greeting ^^; usually when they nod their head and put one hand up, that means im sorry or i'll make it up

  • Wait a minute... I'm a loser whose going to Japan. Yahoo! I can't wait to be smothered by girls! Which is the likeliest of scenarios. Right?

  • @kidhadoken harem :D

  • how did u get treated at school since your a girl n all lol

  • u said they dont know anything about american culture, but dont a lot of japanese high schools usually teach english as a core subject?

  • This is very informative (: You know your stuff!

  • To be fair, most people in America couldn't name a city in Japan besides Tokyo

  • @DerReisendeGaijin

LOL! Your people can't even identify their own cities in the States such as Los Angeles, Miami, Houston, New York, Chicago, Kansas City (MO or KA), Dallas, Seattle, Portland (OR, ME), etc. etc....

Oh yeah some people can't identity Afghanistan or Iraq!

  • @novajoke

Am I supposed to be impressed with your mini-list of major US cities?

  • @DerReisendeGaijin

Gee why don't you ask the same question to your fellow Americans who can't even identify their own cities??

  • Because you're a troll =/

  • @DerReisendeGaijin

You crack me up bro!! Aren't you the one who said "To be fair, most people in America couldn't name a city in Japan besides Tokyo"

I've just expanded your comments by your people (of course not all of them) can't identify major American cities. What .......I'm not telling the truth? Why don't you go to inner city schools and ask them American cities I've mentioned previously.... Of course my people are stupid too when it comes to geography.

  • @novajoke

Yeah, but who cares? My point was that there are tons of people the world over that don't know things like that, and that it isn't unique to Japan(or America for that matter). Most people just don't get introduced to it, or they just don't want to learn it, and it's their loss. Making fun of them for it is a waste of time.

  • @DerReisendeGaijin

Trolls are useless Gaijins coming to my country and spreading crap about my country on Youtube thinking they are this and that when in fact they were rejects in their native country so they came all the way to my country thinking they are some kind of "God".

  • i want to live in Japan now... I can be as cool as Japanese cool guys!! (16 year old american boy)

  • Well Europeans and Americans don't know about Asia's history and the customs and cultures. To be fair, when I lived in the States, every Redneck thinks Asians are Chinese.

  • @novajoke

lol you are basically being like them. They know, it's just some people like to be assholes and be ignorant on purpose. They do teach Asian cultures and customs here in the States. shoot they would teach it in elementary, middle school, and high school, but i guess it also depends on where you live, but a majority of the schools do.

  • @MsInferno

LOL since America is such a big country so yes it all depends on WHERE YOU LIVED in the States. I'm just telling the truth about my experience since where I lived, thousands of thousands of focus lost their jobs due to competition from Far East so yeah they were hostile towards my people.

Just because they teach this and that, you think what they teach in the States are balanced and without bias?

  • Lol, thanks for that great explanation, so maybe my loser life may have a chance in japan lol. Seriously now, Japan is a great country and I believe that any country with such a great, long and rich culture has to have some pride about it, which is not bad, just like said, sometimes they are a little confined.

  • we don't learn other countries histories either

  • Britain, Australia, NZ and many other countries are islands but they don't hang signs that say No Japanese Allowed. Excuse race discrimination all you want but there is absolutely no justification for it.

I for one will never buy products from Japan again after all the blogs here pointing out how bad it is. Don t like my skin cant have my cash.

  • I have question about ur lessons they're in japanese right?

Do you understand most of it? And question nr 2; Do you have to repeat a high school year?

  • As long as they dont have anything against the british, im happy =]

  • your hair is still cute as ever ^^

  • @kiyutakazumiihs Western Culture is not composed of just America, The united states have a population of about 350 million, Canada 33 million and Europe 600 million. So you just made a generalisation based on only a fraction of 33% of the Western World.

  • what if i'm a foreign cool girl? xD

  • @Nightberrii guys are shy lol

    good luck?

  • Then don't you dare set foot on Japanese soil. They will kidnap you.

  • @Nightberrii I doubt most of the girls would like you! lol

  • OUTSTANDING

  • Just a side note, I'm sure most Americans don't know where Quebec is either. :)

  • @acatisfinetoowut Africa? :D Or O think egypt Or iraq. Somewhere around there lol Yup you are sure correct. Unless I were a super nerd I would Know but im just a nerd lol.

  • If you bomb a country do not expect the generation effected and the generation raised to be kind to you usa.

  • they puirposely isolated themselves and hated foreigners until a little before World War I. And then they put their minds to it and caught up, and even surpassed certain countries.

This is why my sister says, that while the Japanese aren't the most creative people in the world, or the people that come up with things that are known on a global basis, they are very good at improving things that were already invented.

of course, somethings are an exception. i.e. manga

  • american presidents? even i don't care about that!

  • you are so kawaii thats why they like you hahaha

  • Ah, well I guess being hispanic wouldn't make me popular with the girls since I have black hair and brown eyes, eh?

I always had the impression natural colored hair and eyes make them go "Ooooo~~"

  • my dad was telling me when he and my mom went to japan like 20 years ago people were really nice. they got lost and this old man helped them find the train station :) (like he literally walked them to the station)

  • hmmm.. du generalisierst schon ziemlich, oder?

  • @ribiselaffe na ja, ueber jede einzelne Person reden waere ein bisschen schwierig...

  • kyuushu, honshu and hokkaido, i dont know the other one

  • is their any cute japanese guys? lol

  • @disgurllikewtf sweetie, they're all cute <3 ^_^

  • The bit about being smothered by girls cause youre a foreign dude is completely false. Youll just be looked at from afar with curiosity-just like this chick said her host sister did. Japanese chicks arent aggressive and rarely make first moves. Not only girls-everyone in fact, is more likely to actually AVOID you in Japan,on assumption you cant speak Japanese, and the fear of showing their "poor" English.

  • Felicia Day and Alyssa Milano are your celebrity look alikes. Lol!

Don't tell the losers that they are cool in japan though! That bad! More of them will go over there. Lol!! Just kidding.

    Great video.

  • no wonder weaboos wanna go to japan cuz losers are cool. Whats happens if your a cool foreigner? Do u become like super cool?Anyways u seem to fit in very well in japan.

  • I dont get it why Japanese peeps aren't taught english in school ( i mean GOOD english , unlike the latino peeps)

Japanese isnt a world language, English is.

So how the hell are they gonna understand??

Also they aren't taught any other languages, like European schools , and American schools.

Japan has a good culture integrity, but they can't go on like that, like the world is slowly but surely uniting.

  • japanese schools doesn't have to copy the teaching styles of european and american schools do they? just because european and american schools teach language classes doesn't mean every other school in the world has to. They spend much time on everything else that they can't just enter another subject in schools out of nowhere. Also consider the fact that they have to learn kanji their whole life!! so learning kanji and another language would be really hard,,,

  • there is a difference between fully learning a language, and learning a second language.

It has be proven that bilingual people tend to be more intelligent, but thats beside the point.

Thing is, you can abbreviate your horizons by knowing more languages.

Look at me, i know english, spanish, french, dutch, papiamentu, a bit japanese.

And there's always someone who cant speak a nation's language, like tourists, and it tends to be more familiar.

  • I was starting last year with OTC - Japanese in the netherlands, and i really had a hard time getting taught by the japanese teachers, because they spoke very little english and it was hard for them to explain things like a simple pencil.

And most students in my class always got the wrong impression. What does it hurt, to know a lil bit english?

  • also i disagree with your last statement saying that japan can't go on without learning english well...majority of the japanese people doesn't fully know english but look at this: their economy is booming, their country is one of the best in the world, and they can compete with every other country in the world..they truly are "going on" even if they don't know english well..a lot of other countries know english well but their country is not in d same top level as japan ....

  • You do have a point there. But to establish human unity around the world, there shud be certain boundaries. They, together with china and korea, will always be a hard obstacle with communication.

And if they are so much interested in other countries (ive seen japanese foreign exchange students around here) why dont they learn the language then?

  • i think they do try to learn the language..but they learn english in junior high and high school, which if you think about it is a bit late so it would be hard to comprehend. it's like me learning japanese in high school right now. it's very hard actually. east asian countries is an obstacle in communication but i think it got a lot easier nowadays compared before. my korean friend who came in the US 2 years ago actually has an amazing english though!!!

  • ~Everyone's a little bit racist~ hahah so cute, i will make that my ringtone :P

  • I think a lot of your viewers are at least interested enough in Japan to know the 4 main island and current leaders. You should have asked who's the president of Kazakhstan, if you wanted to show how normal it would be that Japanese doesn't know a lot about other countries. Personally, i can only name with certainty about 6 African country. But a classmate could name and locate all countries on a map.

  • Question: How will japanese people react at foreign guys with orange/red like hair? :p

  • Hi! Just thought I'd drop you a quick note to let you know that I really enjoy your vblogs tremendously. Keep up the good work.

Just a quick technical note: the audio level on your videos seem to be a little on the low side. Is there any way you could boost the volume up a bit. No biggie, just an observation.

  • My friend's american host family were also shocked to find that she spoke English well. They had assumed her English skills would be minimal considering she was from India. I guess they like many americans are still not aware that India has the largest English speaking population on earth. Most urban indian kids grow up speaking English at home.

  • Yeah, but even if the Indians are the largest speaking population on Earth, they still don't speak English very fluently.

But it's amazing because they are all bilingual...or more than that.

  • i think every ethnicity around the world has its fair share of ppl who have little idea about a different culture let alone that culture's history. For e.g. you said you met someone who had no clue where Quebec or what it was. My indian friend who went on an exchange program to the US was asked by an american classmate if "Indian" was the only language she spoke. LOL.

  • "Everyone's alittle bit rascist tuut tuu".. haha

    thank you, Very informative vid.

how do you say loser in japanese?

  • ive been in jp going on 7 years now and

wow! very insightful, pretty much exactly what i think on all of your points, the loser thing was funny. some people never get it and they re twice your age but you did! how old are you?.

  • Thanks for the glimpse into your life in Japan. Looks like you are really enjoying it.

I was in Japan for a couple of years, but being in the service didn't lend itself to the full immersion you are experiencing.

What has been the most surprising thing you've learned so far? What are some striking differences between school there and school at home?

  • Good stuff :)

  • at your end comment..hmmn i wouldn't really say "fear"...more like uhmmm being respectable..asians are known for being hospitable and respectful especially towards foreigners...it's like when i was still living in the philippines were most filipinos try to be as hospitable to a guest especially when that guest is a foreigner...

  • Dude you look like a dude...go to Shibuya

  • @Z3roVirus lol? that doesn't make you cool they beat you up :(

  • i wonder about japanese people reaction towards latino/hispanic people, i mean, is easy to spot a caucasian tourist, but what about outside the blonde world?

  • great vid, I was expecting you to say many negative things :P But your perspective is right on.

Gaijin is commonly mispronounced, I used to do it to. It's "jean" like the pants not "guy" "gin" like the alcohol ^_^

  • i mean "guy-jean" not "guy-gin"

  • Hey I'm from Quebec! Funny someone asked you that. When I was in Tokyo every time I mentioned that I lived in Montreal, Quebec for a long time most of them only knew because of Celine Dion hahaha. XD

  • I need to go to Japan and meet these girls..erm...people.

  • what about the girls? lol I've heard all about the guys being "cool".

  • :D It's awesome hearing this stuff from someone directly exposed to Japanese culture.. very very interesting. Thank you for sharing ^___^

  • MAKE THEM MORE OFTEN

  • MAKE MORE VIDS

  • With that headband you remind me of Molly Ringwald from breakfast club...cute :D

  • hey you're right... that's actually really cool

  • Tnx for shareing this with us ^.^

  • klasse ;D immer wieder nett deine erfahrungen vom anderen punkt der erde zu hören :)

  • Nice video 5 stars, but there are racist people every were, just to put it out there

  • @Cebrail1991 so true! im japanese and like there are racist people in Japan and also right now im in USA and there are racist people here too lol so its just how people are taught and what their opinions are lol

  • thanks kat, i always wanted to know that.

  • Love the video, love the hair.... love what you say at 1:28 min

  • hahaha that was funny...so i have hope in japan "huraaaaaaaaaah" =]

lol thanks for info...keeping on makeing vids!!

  • Nice vid, thank you Kat!

Lol I loved that loser part, is it the same with foreign girls?

  • @katrandom haha i guess its just a girl thing to go crazy for boys... I mean even foreign exchange students in american get more attention... a bunch of french kids came to my school in Chicago and they all hooked up with more than one girl, it was a little funny haha
