10 minutes of my time? Are you nuts? Yesterday I got home from the supermarket, and was barely able to walk through the door before I shoved the can of vegetarian refried beans into my mouth. When I get hungry, I've got NO time for cooking. I just eat the raw ingredients.
Yes - you vegan bakin bits look delicious. But, I turn on my stove about once a year. I live by the microwave.
@graceadeline1990 Why are you taking so much offense? Because of my line "Are you nuts?" I'm joking around about myself (i.e. what I said is true, but I recognize the humor in it). There's no practical way to convey humor through little 500-character textboxes.
shitake mushrooms baked with olive oil have a distinctly bacon-like taste, try that sometime. delicious and pretty good for you to, depending on the amount of oil
stop saying stuff is full of "chemicals" every substance in the universe is made of a chemical or several chemicals...hydroginated fats sure UNHEALTHY chemicals...sure....normal everyday chemicals? stop it.
@treinspore There's nothing healthy about bacon.I've cut back on it coz of the fat and cholesterol.I suggest others do too.Paula Deen is thin if you ask me.
@Meliasaurus I doubt that using a little oil in a fry pan is going to add hydrogen to anything. Where is the extra hydrogen coming from? Or what's being lost to increase the hydrogen content? Do you have data from a real scientist to back up your claim? Someone who actually attended a proper course of study in chemistry? I'd like to see that report or dissertation. Do you have a link? Thanks for your help.
@SinnermansGuide I'm just a beginning dietetics student and we learned in food science that this is what happens. There was no report or dissertation, it was just in our class notes.
Maybe it's even a negligible amount. It was ironic that we'd be going out of our way to be making bacon bits with out hydrogenated oil but the method of cooking causes hydrogentation.
@Meliasaurus Actually you are only partly right. In order to hydrogenate an oil, you must bring it to near smoking point then add water to the bottom which is then near-instantaneously converted to steam which brings up water-soluable compounds (this process is known as sparging). Following this, a catalyst (usually a nickel-like powder) along with pressure & that heat, causes a reaction resulting in the hydrogenated oil.
In short, hydrogenated oil isn't made as easily as heating up oil.
But she mentioned that she sometimes uses the microwave.. Microwave ovens are small radiation boxes, the radiation destroys the cells in the food, killing the nutrition. And making the food radiated in the end.
I made this and added fennel seeds and a dash of stevia and garlic powder to the 'bits'- it tasted like sausage! GREAT RECIPE- and I really like Joni's personality- GREAT VIDEO! THANKS!
byebye...liquid smoke is literally smoke that is condensed back into a liquid. it adds a VERY smoky flavor to whatever you add it to. use it sparingly, though, a little goes a long way. you can find it at most grocery stores, along with the marinades.
@ByeByeBelly Its in the grocery stores honey. Its in the area where you find bbq sauce and Worchestershire sauce. Its a brown liquid that you add to sauces or soups. You add just a dash of it.
i love bakin tits! i mean bits....

cooking oil at high heats in metal (frying) causes them to hydrogenate. how is this better?

1st, why do u assume it's metal. lt could be cast iron.
2ndly, l'm interested in more info re. ur statement on high heat from oils.

If you want proper bacon
bacon strips
put in a pan
put a metal weight on top to hold it down
put in a hot pre heated oven
- perfect - flat - restaurant quality bacon
not that shriveled up crap
- slice if you want bacon bits.
