  • sooo... at that time everybody knows how to dance this eh?? if i were to exist at that time the dance floor will be total chaos... miss my step n step into other people feets..

  • I like how @4;42 they saw Mr and Mrs Elton coming and all of them took off and the Eltons just stand there awkwardly!!!

  • anybody else notice emma and knightley's dance is to the same music (and is the same dance) as elizabeth's and darcy's in the 1995 bbc version?

  • @Enjene yes! i was just thinking that! i've seen that scene too many times not to recognise the music it seems! ahaha

  • toni collette is so miscast in this. how can anyone be expected to believe she is 17!

  • @neibi78 where does it say she's 17? everyone keeps saying it but i cant find the part anywhere?!!!

  • @Supablonde1 In the book it states that Harriet Smith is 17.

  • @Supablonde1 Well they didnt pick the right actress then to play a 17yr old!!! Toni Collette looks way too old!!!

  • I hate this version. Not very well cast at all. And I hate to say that bc I want to like it. It is very cheerful and colorful. The woman playing JAne does not seem as a timid girl at all. she seems too wordly. It bothers me.

  • great danse

  • They've got the characters of Emma and Jane just right. This is exactly how I imagined them in the book, especially Jane. I always liked and pitied Jane the most, and I think they captured that well in this version.

  • mrs elton is oh so rude, talking with her mouth full. how unlady like. ;) 1:55

  • aww its so cute how he chases after her when shes eluding his questions about the eltons...

  • Mr. Knightley goes beyond Gorgeous!

  • 6:56...the wife wont stop hounding me until I learn this dance...lol..agreed?

  • the emma and knightly dance looks similar to the darcy and lizzy dance

  • @fkhang9223 That's 'cause it is the same dance - listen to the music. I do not profess to be an expert on all Jane Austen movies (though others have said I have extensive knowledge), but it seems like Darcy and Lizzy's dance would be closer to the real version than this one..

  • @ewimpee I quite agree with you. this one seems to be much more of a farce. This whole version. Is this the way it was meant?

  • The dancing scene is SO beautiful!

  • He is still single because he was always meant for Emma.

  • HOW IS MR. KNIGHTLEY STILL SINGLE??? <3

  • 2:15 - 2:22 It's Holly Holiday!!!

  • The scene with Mrs. E telling jane she is fragile, then telling Mr. Knightly to tell her, is hard to watch. Mr. Knightly is not the person who would react so submissively; he is gentle and kind, but has a bit more of a commanding presence. Also, Mrs Elton would not call him "Knightly" in his presence. (That's my opinion, I just read the book and some details are still fresh)

  • "Jane, you're a very very fragile creature!" *Slaps Jane's hand repeatedly*

  • Knightly sounds so sexy when he says 'indeed we are not'. One of my favourite films ever - I love it! x thank you for posting!

  • "I just want to stay here where it's cosy" HUGE house in the background.. xD

  • Im sure she knows what she can endure, mrs Elton...of course, do take care of yourself.

  • Comment removed

  • Mrs. Elton is a PIG. It's bad manners to talk while eating, lol

  • ~I love this part... "Do you know, Franks' just told me a bit of news. He's heard of Mrs. Elton and yet he still wants to meet her!" Love It!!!

  • Anyone else notice that the same song that is playing (at 9:40) is in the BBC version of Pride and Prejudice?

  • @ImSoooSorryforU yes! anyone know the name of that song?

  • @westerneyes It's called Mr. Beveridge's Maggot.

  • "Jane! You're a very very fragile creature!" (says this while hitting her hand) LOL

  • he has a bit of that Paul Rudd look, knightly.

  • @andriusz they chose paul rudd as the sort of same character in Clueless.

  • the way Mr. Knightley says "indeed we are not" sends goosebumps down my spine! what a voice...

  • "haha, brother and sister?...indeed we are not" :D indeed you aren't...once you know they end up together and you watch the movie again, it's sooooooooo obvious!

  • Miss. bates..has ADHD I am sure of it.

  • Yes, do take care of yourself, Miss Fairfax.

    (Most agreeable.)

  • I <3 Mr. Knightley!!

  • the dance Harriet dances after she is snubbed is Auretti's Dutch skipper and the dance going on in the background before Emma and Mr Knightly dance is Jacob's Hall jig.

  • mrs elton plays keira knightley's mom in bend it like beckham and keira will play elizabeth bennet and keira's last name is knightley like mr knightley in the movie that mrs elton is in.....

  • @AnnaBxox24 he also plays the film maker in spice world. theres a flash back for you

  • i love how mr knightley just looks like he's going to laugh at absolutely everything that happens.. he's awesome!!

  • I really like Knightley in this scene he was so kind and such a gentleman.

  • i hate the way tht way tht new lady breaths while she talks and eats blah and she took emma's dad's chair!

  • I love their reaction at 4:40 "Hmm that was odd."

  • I hope I'll have husband as gentleman as Mr. Knightley :)

  • mrs Elton is Emma vulgarized & exagerated & deprived of her charm & genteelness. Jane is extremely discreet & unescrutable, Mr Knightley as his name indicates

  • mrs Elton is Emma vulgarized & exagerated & deprived of her charm. Jane is extremely discreet & unescrutable

  • Love "Mr Beveridges Maggot"- The dance where Emma and Knightley are together after he asks who she is going to dance with. Its the same music Lizzy and Darcy dance to in the BBC version of Pride and Predjudice

  • @TheGlassbooks i thought they were the same too but the one in pp is actually rondeau abdelazer by purcell

  • Love "Mr Beveridges Maggot"- The dance where Emma and Knightley are together. Its the same dance Lizzy and Darcy dance to in the BBC version of Pride and Predjudice

  • indeed we are not <3

  • the last dance looks like the soultrain

  • Ah Mr Knightley, the gentleman as always (:

  • I can't help but LOL at 00:29 - 00:33, since Jane is played by the same actress who was Attia in Rome. Jane and Attia of the Julii - now THAT'S comparing apples and oranges!!!

  • All Knightley comments aside, I find Miss Bates absolutely adorable...I know people just like her.

  • Jane, you're a very, very fragile creature! *slap*slap*slap*

  • Ooh at 6.22 I would so like to kick Mr Elton right up his tail-coat... What a rotten smug little prig he is... I love this version, :0)x

  • Ah, I recognize that song where Mr. Knightley and Emma are dancing. That's when Darcy and Elizabeth dance for the first time. :)

  • @Maria6237 .. Yes the music is the same, it's called 'Mr Beveridges Maggot'... It was danced more precisely in P*&P but I like this version too.. It's a shame they cut it short... :0)x

  • Did anyone else notice but at about 02:00 Mrs Elton breathes pretty loudly between each chew and between the dialogue

LOL, she annoys me so much

  • @HELENDOVAN Lol i was just wondering about that too. xD

    Perhaps she ahs asthma?

  • @HELENDOVAN ugh yes, she's disgusting!!!

  • @irosette i thought i was the only one who's bothered with her breathing!! i had expected some peas or carrots would come out from her nostrils while she did that.

  • @chemimayo ... Your comments made me laugh out loud.. Peas and carrots indeed... I would have like to see that, maybe Mrs 'E' would pass it on as a new fashion she is 'simply quoting other people'... I wonder who the other people are AND are they all glad she has gone to Highbury... :0)x

  • perfect casting for mr Knightley! i thought of hugh jackman as mr knightly when i read the book, but i really like jeremy northam as mr knightley here!!

he's cooler than those poodle haired guys on the back!

  • oh dear, Mrs Elton sounds a bit like a horse when she speaks.

  • Last dance is a song from Pride and Prejudice ;))) Actually, same dance too! God only knows how many time i've seen this movie... lol

  • Last dance is a song from Pride and Prejudice ;)))

  • @nenaviju2 Yes it is;) It's a duple minor longways dance first published by John Playford's son, Henry Playford, in his 1695 Dancing Master.

    Beautiful piece <3

  • "What is the point of me being nearly 22 if there is still so much for me to learn?"

    Innocence for the ages!

  • Mr Knightley sounds like he has a cold when he's talking to Emma out on the balcony.

  • Wow. Their dances were so boring. But I guess that was the custom then.

  • @rayna181 I don't think so! I think they were beautiful, not so much focused on sexiness like today, but grace!

  • @icesk8ergal1123 Trust me, I hate the type of "sexy" dancing people do today. I merely meant that theirs was boring. Like have you ever seen "Gone with the Wind"? Thats the kind of dancing i like. It was fun and exciting.

  • The music used at the end was also in Pride and Prejudice when Darcy and Elizabeth danced.

  • i like the elderly lady miss bates she is sort of lovable . . .

  • just dawned on me....is Mr Churchill the same actor in Moulon Rouge oppisite Nicole Kidman? her love ?...wow he looks so different.

  • @bronteteri yes he is^^

  • Girls if you want to see a really spine tingling dance scene watch the new Emma dance at the crown in. The expressions on that knightley's face are just amazing as he realises hes falling for her & is trying his best not to show how he feels. Its just fab!!! Music is beautiful too1

  • which version?

  • @chocopoli The BBC 2009 version. Its on Utube at the moment and if you have the time you should tune in! I wasn't sure after the first episode but then I got hooked well and truly by episode two/three! More time to develop story & characters. Enjoy!

  • That is my favorite dance scene from all of the Jane Austen dramas. While the dancing itself is not key (though they are doing fun ones), the chemistry between Emma and Knightley is palpable.

  • @marshsundeen Its amazing isn't it? JLM was superb as Knightley - really gave him a charming vulnerability without even saying a word and great humour at the same time. Def my fav version and JN Knightley comes next. Not fond of Mark Strong version.

  • Love this scene! But what's with the big lady in the red dress? She kinda looks out of place...

  • i love it when he says indeed we are not :)

  • @allsmilesful I know, it's fantastic! the intonation just makes my spine tingle

  • I find it extremely ironic that they used the exact song and dance that Pride and Prejudice used only a year earlier. Were they trying to recreate the intensity from that scene because if so there's no possible way :) Please don't think I'm bashing this movie, I actually like this movie, but I didn't like that they pretty much took the scene from Pride and put it in here, it seemed weird.

  • @AlieandAce LOL maybe the music was popular in this time also...musice does travel...

  • i hate mrs elton

  • She talks to Jane Fairfax as if she is a dog

  • Frank needs some Frizz-Ease!! LOL

  • amen to that!

  • @transnet87 I'd say he looked like the mad hatter before he went mad with that hair.

  • It's just weird that Ewan Mcgregor played in Trainspotting and now the Emma 2009 PBS Mr. Knightly also played in Trainspotting (sickboy).

  • Love, love, love the scene at 9:09.

  • 9:32 makes me blush every time I watch it. Thats so rauchy for Jane....probably not her words....

  • but very nearly! =) He says: "Brother and sister! no, indeed!"

  • "I can think of nothing less appealing than an evening of watching other people dance."

"Then you shall have to dance yourself."

"I have no taste for it. I'd rather fetch that stick."

"I'll try to remember to bring it to the ball."

  • The whole scene from 2:38 is brilliant

  • Ewan McGregor is so good looking in real life, but not so much in this movie.

  • @rachelthemoviefreak I agree this movie does not do him justice at all. He is a most agreeable man in real life.

  • Mr. Knightley is such a gentleman! He is my second favourite Austenian man after Colonel Brandon.

  • Colonel Brandon is a dude! love him!

  • I love this movie but the cast left a lot to be desired, knightly was fine however, the directing was all over the place.

  • how was the directing all over the place? anything in particular?

  • Mrs.Elton breathes in the most annoying way when she's talking..

  • Knightly is so hot in this section of the movie. Love him.

  • @littleshoeshopper Yeah.... and he's got a lovely soft voice. Oh why aren't there gentlemen like him anymore? I should have been around in those times.....

  • Sigh............if only they had waited to make "Interview With A Vampire" for just a couple more years, Ewan McGregor would have made the perfect Lestat. His look in this just reminds me of that. Tom Cruise....yech.........not nearly half the actor McGregor is.

  • I prefer the Kate Beckinsale version.

  • Whats the name of the song that is playing at 9:34?

  • What time period is this?

  • "Whom are you going to dance with?"......

"Brother and sister..... Indeed we are not" Oh my, he gives me chills! Mr. Knightly and Emma forever! He was perfect for this role! Oh and I love the " I just want to stay here where its cosy" That was a brilliant shot!

  • Nah, Mark Strong in the perfect Knightley. He actually has a personality.

  • i didn't realized that it's McGregor! because of the hair may be..

  • mr. knightly is actually quite graceful. does that sound weird?

  • wow...the neck proportion of a Barbie

  • thank you so so much

  • "Brother and sister?? Indeed we are not"

    sigh.....

  • Please! Do not put Churchill too close to Jane. That was just the whole thing. And taking a house in Highbury??? Firstly he could not get away from his aunt and secondly he did not want to raise any suspicion.

  • Emma is 22 and Mr.Knightly was 16 when she was born so he is 38!

  • do people see a storytelling in that last dance? of love?

  • that's the dance Mt. Darcy and Lizzy danced to in Pride and Prejudice 1995

  • humm are you sure, I think it is diffent, which one, the one at the ball, in Mr. Bingles house? I don't it is!!!

  • It is!!

  • It most certainly is the same song and same dance as at the Netherfield Ball

  • Wow, it sounds diffent at the Netherfield ball, but thank you, and what is the song called?

  • No No I mean when Knightly and miss smith were dancing, at 5:10 what is the name of the song! not the one were him and Emma were dancing,

  • It is!!! In every Jane Austen movie the same song.. ;-)

  • :) hmmm

  • I acatually laughed with joy at 9:33 when knightlyl says,'Indeed we are not"...i think this is the first time ever he actually gives a direct sign that he likes her....<3

  • The last dance reminds me of the dance elizabeth and mr. darcy do in pride and prejudice. its my favorite scene in that movie and this one!

  • What is that name that they are all dancing too, were Harrett and Emma and Mr, chuchhill and Mr. Knightly are dancing too? that starts at 5:00

  • What is the song that Emma and Knightly dance to???

  • It's called Mr. Beveridge's Maggot.

  • this scene is sooooo charming

  • Oooooh...

"We are not brother and sister!"

    "...Indeed we are not."

  • the dance looked so lovely

mr. knightley looks a lot thinner than i imagined.

  • The handsomest Austen hero.

  • "I'd rather fetch that stick."

"I'll havve to remember to bring it to the ball."

    XDD That was priceless

  • wow, love her hair!!

  • I like this song better in Pride and Prejudice. To me, it seems a little too fast here...

  • I want to dance with Mr. Knightley too! And to that song! ;) It's so beautiful and the way Emma smiles when he dances with Harriet just makes this whole scene so happy :)

  • Mr.Knightly is very handsome

  • okay, ewan mcgreggor as obiwan, hawt...

ewan mcgreggor as frank 'poodle' churchill, yikes...just wrong..

and it irritates me how mrs. elton calls "knightley!"

  • I love how Mr Elton walks into the room so proud with Mrs Elton on his arm. Surely he knows that everyone dislikes her.

  • the comment about them being siblings threw Knightley, did it not? ;)

Imagine what it would be like if your crush were ever to say something like this in such a flippant way ...can't be nice

  • Haha - but at the start, he himself said he was practically a brother to her, and at this point both of their feelings have so much changed that she acknowledges first that they are hardly brother and sister!

  • Since you replaced the rivet in her spectacles, not only have they been as good as new, they have been better"....!@@ luv it..

notice how everyone walks away as soon as Mrs. Elton arrives...i cant stop laughing...

  • Emma is sooo truly happy when Mr. Knightley dances with Harriet...!!! her smile is the best here

  • aww...i love how knightley almost takes emma's hands at 8:22 :) haha

  • Was it mentioned earlier that Emma and Mr. Knightly are 20 something years apart?

  • i'm pretty sure in the novel it says that he is 16 years older..

    basically 20.

  • When Emma and Mr. Knightly shake hands after their first disagreement concerning Miss Smith's rejection of the farmer's proposal Mr. Knightly mentions that he was 16 when Emma was born.

  • omg Mrs. Elton is so cras.

  • Yes the tune that plays while Emma and Mr. Knightley are dancing is "Mr Beveridge's Maggot." Maggot in this case means "favorite" or "fancy" or "to like" and nothing to do with fly larvae. lol

  • mr elton is so flippin arrogant!!!

  • what a beautiful minuet and beautiful dance!

  • how can we find the music used in this movie? ^^ love it!

  • just what I thought! especially the last piece.
