We were trained by a Scout Ranger Tech Sgt. from the 4th IB during our COTC for CAT(Citizen's Army Training) back in the 80s(Marcos Era) & he told us you can always tell the newbies from the vets by their appearance. Rookies were well scrubbed, wore crisp clean uniform and sport short hair, while the vets wore unkempt uniform, grew mullets & beards, smelled from weeks of not bathing and sported a lot of anting-anting(amulets) all over their body ; P

Sometimes, "Lasyah" is thicker than water, so even if one is not afilliated with the ASG but has some relatives within the group, this one joins the battle. That is very true in these areas, am I right? The thin line between combatants and non-combatants gets blurred. Even when politicos fight among themselves, families get involved.
But those views were warrantless and prejudiced. What did our Muslim soldiers know about 9/11? Were they part of the terror cells that attacked New York? No! They were devout Muslims, too but they did not succumb to the Jihad these terrorists were calling. To tell you, as a unit, we faced not just the armed communists but also the ASG. We did not discriminate, as long as there is a threat to national security. We were Christians, Muslims and some Lumads lumped together.

We were trained by a Scout Ranger Tech Sgt. from the 4th IB during our COTC for CAT(Citizen's Army Training) back in the 80s(Marcos Era) & he told us you can always tell the newbies from the vets by their appearance. Rookies were well scrubbed, wore crisp clean uniform and sport short hair, while the vets wore unkempt uniform, grew mullets & beards, smelled from weeks of not bathing and sported a lot of anting-anting(amulets) all over their body ; P
Don't know if it's still true today though.

PHILIPPINE LAW MAKERS - Amend the NATIONAL DEFENSE ACT 1935. Abolish the 3 years term of Enlistment which was designed before the World War 2. Today about 90% of of the Rank and file soldiers of the AFP are college graduate, they need a term until their retirement age. They need to be appointed just like other government workers.

Sometimes, "Lasyah" is thicker than water, so even if one is not afilliated with the ASG but has some relatives within the group, this one joins the battle. That is very true in these areas, am I right? The thin line between combatants and non-combatants gets blurred. Even when politicos fight among themselves, families get involved.

@dietcoke1996 Last hari-raya in Jolo, i was there.I could not imagine how the Philippine soldiers destroyed the significant day of our Muslim brothers and sisters there. They were being disrespectful and rude, they were bombing the mosque in some part of the place. Many innocents died esp the children ones.

@22zick Well, I could not justify that one as much as you could justify the killing of civilians and burning of villages in Lanao del Norte by the MILF in August, 2008. It's just the same as soldiers being harassed in their patrol bases during New Year's Day, 2009.

@22zick If you're a Tausg who care about Jolo, reach out to the people, the stakeholders in town in your small way: the academe at Notre Dame; the imams and priests (clerics), the students, teachers. Make a culture of peace in your neighborhood. In time, the Tausugs, Bisayahs, Lan-nangs, Samals and Badjaos will not be needing us anymore to keep peace and order in Jolo. You can govern your place peacefully. It's all a matter of trust, understanding and common objective of achieving peace in Jolo.

@yasinsalaheldin!. marunong ka nmn gumalang sa mga military. hindi lng gera ang hinaharap nila kundi ang pgtulong dn sa kapwa! tulad ng my mga bgyo saan sila? diba tumutulong din? kaya hindi lng gera ang alam nila. kung wla sila baka ikw at ang pamilya mo ay wla na sa mundo. kaya kahit papano gumalang ka nmn.. hindi mu mn cguro maikompara ang training nila sa ibang bansa pero ginagwa nila ang best para sa bansa natin at sa mga tao. cguro my lahi kang rebelde kaya ka ng critisize

@yasinsalaheldin tanga!!! kinompare ba naman ang PSG tska SWAT sa NAVY SEAL! bobo! iba ang liga nila! alam ko magaling ang Navy SEAL pero ang Philippine Scout Ranger nirerespeto din sa buong mundo ang kakayahan nila. kung Navy SEAL padala mo sa Mindanao, malamang durog yang mga yan at mauulit ngyari sa Vietnam. nakakatawa pinagsasabi mo, nagmamarunong ka subalit mali naman ang sinasabi mo. mamaya niyan sabihin mo na talo ng Navy SEAL ang MOSSAD.
