I have had 2 gateway computers and 1 e-machine and I will never buy them again the first one was in the shop 5 times in one year.

I would recommend Asus,HP,Apple, Sony,Samsung,Toshiba and Alienware in no order but Apple and Alienware are my favorites.

the back light cable has developed a bad connection some were in the cable just do like waydeewaydee described but check the cable between the mother board and the inverter i bet you will if the problem there I was lucky with mine b/c I could move the cable while it was on without takeing much apart but I fixed mine and saved 1000 b/c compact won't sell just the cable that i needed

Backlight inverter cable is loose, pop open the casing just above the keyboard (its a seperate piece and inspect the connection to the motherboard below.) If the connection is fine then pop open the display casing and locate the inverter (generally directly behind the acer logo) and replace the unit - not very expensive.

Also if its less than a year old it'll still be under original warranty, if you don't feel like doing the work yourself then just get Acer to?

They are cheap for the provided capabilities but mostly they work only around 1.5 years, and then for sure some parts or semiconductors there get broken, and not because of misuse but just because of low quality. That happens a lot with that Acer model. Its the backlight controller. When I first got my acer laptop the backlight never came on. I got a replacement and no problems since. It's actually a great laptop. Later though thunderbugs got in the cavity of the lcd and whiteboard. So now there are blacks dots here and there. hahaha. Easily fixed but im too lazy.
