Most of the Russian and Romanian losses were suffered (incurred) during the abortive charges in the summer of 1877, while most of the Turks were killed at the end of the siege in December of 1877, or died shortly after their capture by the Russians. In other words, only a handful of Turks (about 3000) - including Osman Pasha - survived their defeat.

But Russians and Romenians had lost 15.500 soldiers,3 General and 350 Officer..Turks lost 4.000 soldiers at this attack..After Russians controled Sofia..Osman Pasha had left without support from Capital and had to abandon city and Russians captured Plevna after Osman Pasha left the town..That's the real history and we're prouding with Osman Pasha and his soldiers..If there is a hero in this battle ,he's Osman Pasha!! Russian King had given a medal to Osman Pasha for his breave..
Osman pasha was captured in the town and surrendered his sword to general Totleben, which he gave back to him from respect. I'm from Pleven, if i dont know the history of this town nobody does.

It's only sad, that the Russian imperialists, tsarist, communist and "democratic" confuse the Russians by claiming that they "liberate" when they occupy. In 1877 they "thanked" Romania by occupying a 90% Romanian ethnic region called Basarabia. Today, they have occupation armies in Moldova, Georgia etc. Neither Mo. or Ga. are planning to attack Russia. Enough occupation.

Actually, in the Russo-Turkish War of 1877-8, there was a contingent of 7,444 Bulgarian fighters in the "Opulchenie" - a special Bulgarian military unit organized in Russia. Besides, there were about 12,000 Bulgarian volunteer fighters, who collaborated with the Russian Army and 4,000 Russian Inperial Army officers and men who were members of the Bulgarian minority in Russia. A total of 24,000 fighters of Bulgarian origin fought in the said war. The Romanians were 40,000.

The Russians deployed 202,000 troops in the Balkans, aided by 40,000 Romanians, and 8,000 Bulgarians (under Russian command), plus about 20,000 Bulgarian guerrillas and volunteers. The grand total deployment by the Turks in Bulgaria was about 285,000. Let us not forget the Caucasus Front, where the Russians had 95,000 troops, aided by 10,000 Armenian volunteers, and the Turks had 100,000.

You are right up to a point. The Romanians participated actively in the siege of Pleven - not from the very beginning, however. Indeed, the exploits of the Russians and Bulgarians are perhaps somewhat overemphasized, but there is hardly any HISTORICAL movie that is totally unbiased. The multiethnic RUSSIAN IMPERIAL ARMY was the cardinal factor in the defeat of Ottoman Turkey. The Romanian, Serbian, and Bulgarian forces contribubted, too, but in a more modest fashion.

Total losses in dead at Pleven were: 24,000 Russians and 4,000 Romanians on the side of the victors and 42,000 Turks. Most of the Russian and Romanian losses were suffered (incurred) during the abortive charges in the summer of 1877, while most of the Turks were killed at the end of the siege in December of 1877, or died shortly after their capture by the Russians. In other words, only a handful of Turks (about 3000) - including Osman Pasha - survived their defeat.

Very well made movie clip! You can see the passions or hatreds of soldiers from both camps-Greek orthodox Christian Russian soldiers vs. Muslim Ottoman soldiers. When bullets and cannon balls ran out, you had to resort to stones and rocks to beat each other to death.

Using your comrades' corpses as projectiles against the advancing Ottomans was a little bit too extreme to me, if that was the case. In today's wars, fallen soldiers from all sides are treated with more respect.
Anyway, all new recruits learn basic hand-to-hand combat. In intense fighting, soldiers use their bayonet and their empty rifle as weapons for stabbing and as a swinging club when the ammunition runs out.

During the climax of the pivotal battle of Shipka Pass in Bulgaria in August of 1877, the situation was so desperate that the surviving Russian and Bulgarian defenders - out of ammunition, food, water, and desperate - resorted to using the bodies of their dead comrades as weapons against the Turkish attackers who heavily outnumbered and outgunned them. It is difficult to blame them, if we were to put ourselves in their shoes.

Yes, it was always a desperate situation in every battle. Many people began to lose their minds during and, even, after a battle.
However, many Slavic nationalists fighting the Turks would prefer to die rather than live under Ottoman rule. In the early scenes of the film, when captured rebels were marched off to be executed by the Ottomans, some of them jumped over the cliff to their death rather than to be beheaded by a Turkish executioner.

The final count of dead fighters during the Russo-Turkish War of 1877-78 was 45,000 Russians, Romanians, and Bulgarians plus 122,000 Turks on the Balkan Front (Bulgaria); and 11,000 Russians and Armenians plus 27,000 Turks on the Armenian Front. A number of the Turks died as prisoners of war - due to exposure, typically en route to POW camps. As for the few Russian prisoners captured by the Turks - mostly wounded men - they were TORTURED TO DEATH by the Turks.

In one of the attacks against the Turkish positions around Pleven (Plevna) in July of 1877, the Russo-Romanian forces lost close to 16,000 men. However, the final number of dead in the battle for the Bulgarian city of Pleven, was about 24,000 for the victorious Russo-Romanian besiegers and over 30,000 for the losing Turkish defenders. Many of the Turks died at the end - during an abortive attempt to get out of Pleven.

But Russians and Romenians had lost 15.500 soldiers,3 General and 350 Officer..Turks lost 4.000 soldiers at this attack..After Russians controled Sofia..Osman Pasha had left without support from Capital and had to abandon city and Russians captured Plevna after Osman Pasha left the town..That's the real history and we're prouding with Osman Pasha and his soldiers..If there is a hero in this battle ,he's Osman Pasha!! Russian King had given a medal to Osman Pasha for his breave..

@TurkishStar28 Uh, Turkish casualties add up to about 60,000 for the series of battles in the Shipka pass, and that's without casualty figures for the first battle. I don't know what the Russian casualties were, but according to F.V Greene, it was "under 20,000" (p. 367)
