Ok, here is a german video about the public transportation system in Medellin :) This may solve a lot of your doubts (and ignorance for some of you...)
I think that this is one of the grandest things I've ever seen a government do for it's people!! How wonderful not to have to hike up and down that hill!!! I'm very happy for the people that get to use it! I'm sure there are many more good people in this country than the bad.
Lol people, I'm Colombian and I'm proud of this project. Let me clarify you some facts: this was made by Medellin's goverment, just like the metro, the BTR and the aerial tram (and not by the Medellin's drug cartel, that stop existing like 20 years ago...) Also, this is just "tiny" project for Medellin... there are a lot of other social projects being done, like in every other city in the world. Cities are always going to be under constrution.
The Government of Medellin is providing "quality of life" to people that can't have access to "commodities". its a nice bet for transportation regarding an extreme topography. lost of elderly and handicapped people can have a decent life with this project. it's not finished yet, since all escalators have roofs. I invite you to visit Colombia. no, we are not all about drugs, no, we don't live on trees or die of starvation. Get educated, we are a country rich on natural resources and ingenuity.
Does anyone else think that this is probably paid for by drug lords from the area? You know... Medellin, home of the Medellín Cartel, and Pablo Escobar?
@yourtreat2 . I invite you to visit Colombia. no, we are not all about drugs, no, we don't live on trees or die of starvation. Get educated, we are a country rich on natural resources and ingenuity.
All you ignorant spoiled brats don't know how hard it is to walk up those barrios everyday without a leg, this escalator may be stupid but it is helping the community in a way. And medellín is a great city to live in, We are developed hardworking people overshadowed by our violent past
I've been in Colombia and I found all the cool things, the people are magnificent ! Colombia is nothing like the others say ,, I think Colombia very cool (((( the real risk of going to Colombia is going to stay ))))
@avaroses I invite you to visit Colombia. no, we are not all about drugs, no, we don't live on trees or die of starvation. Get educated, we are a country rich on natural resources and ingenuity.
We will be revisiting this issue in the near future as the Olympics get closer. I believe you will see some major changes to the areas surrounding the escalator and the attitudes of the people concerning this issue.
How wonderful, especially for women with several little ones, or somebody with a lot of stuff to carry, or old or weaker people, or people who hurt when they exert too much. This is magnificent. It will really improve lives.
at least Colombia actually makes a bold effort to ameliorate the conditions in hostile areas, not only in transportation but in education, economic re-organization, and political legitimacy as well. I've been all over the slums of the U.S., from the housing projects of new york city to the ghettos of California, and to put it plainly, all I have seen throughout the years in terms of Government involvement is the same old sh*t in a new package. Cut them some slack and stop being ignorant.
@Mikeecco You've been to the ghettos and walked out alive? Congratulations. If you've seen the people you would realize the situation is unfixable, they simply refuse to help themselves and would rather continue living off of the taxpayers than working their way out of poverty and a life of crime. The best we can do is to keep them segregated from the rest of us.
Fuck u all ignorant people who think Medellin is like it was in 90's. Just stop judging all the people as killers, drug dealers or illiterate. I bet I live better than many of you, I've received a good education till now and i've lived in Medellin my entire life. Maybe people of this district are poor in goods or money, but believe me, you're poor in mind. Shame on you!
@mauroe1991 I seriously doubt your standard of living in that third world country is better than most people here on YouTube, unless you are in fact a drug dealer. Now please, those coffee beans aren't going to get to me on their own.
@545Kalashnikov Do you know what I really doubt? I doubt you can identify the location of a country in a map a very good sign of a common ignorant that just talk without knowing anything about people in those countries of third world. I laugh at your ignorance, you always think we don't have a car here or a beautiful house. Perhaps all the cocaine you consume is damaging your brain and that prevent you to see Money or good standards of living are not just in developed countries. What a pity!
@mauroe1991 Well, that pretty much is the definition of a developed country, and you just implied that yours is not. You just indirectly validated my comment and invalidated yours.
@545Kalashnikov Bla, bla... I know what a developed country is, what I can't still understand is your ignorance when you talk about emerging nations. I didn't validate any comment, I just wanted to make you understand you were not right when you wrongly doubted about good living conditions in these countries. But let's say yeah, you people who live in developed country are the ones that live very well and have all the money in the world ;)
@mauroe1991 Again basic definition. And no, I don't consider you to be "emerging," as I have yet to see any headway in that direction. For a country that has gained its independence over 200 years ago, you sure haven't accomplished much.
@545Kalashnikov You should look for more information about emerging countries, dude! What a fatuous! you're right when you say we haven't accomplished much as a country but that doesn't mean colombian general society can't have a great quality of life. I don't wanna persuade you, I know people like you ususally think you are the only fortunate and still think we live in a jungle, lol. Just saying i live perfectly here with my family and don't need anyone's approval.
@545Kalashnikov LOL! Are you just trolling? Columbia is far from being a 3rd world country. Have you been there in the last 30 years? Also they put a wrap on the drug trade almost 30 years ago as well. You need to educate yourself before showing off how stupid you are.
@zoics1 A wrap on the drug trade? Care to explain the increasing reports of drug smuggling submarines and other complex methods of getting drugs across boarders? I suggest YOU educate yourself before going out of your way to insult others.
@545Kalashnikov Increasing reports? Care to share any "statistics" you have of increasing trends? Tourism is increasing, drug exports are decreasing, violence is decreasing, and terrorism is decreasing. Colombia is winning the good fight, while you are still sitting on your lazy ass, trolling and downplaying countries without even good statistics. I suggest you jump out of your site and educate yourself with FACTS before downplaying other countries.
@Mikeecco Thought you were a savage drug lord down in Columbia for some reason. Why would I care what lesser nations think of us? They have their own ignorant stereotypes as well and I couldn't care less.
@545Kalashnikov First of all, how can you even criticize a country without even spelling the name right. Its Colombia, and your the real ignorant one.
@545Kalashnikov Yahhh... you got it all wrong..... First of all, I am a Swedish-American history professor from living in Texas. Second, its spelled "Colombia" (No, you do not change the spelling when you translate it to English) you illiterate bonehead. Lastly, the reason they have ignorant stereotypes about us is because of individuals like you.
@545Kalashnikov Hah you think history is the only thing I've studied. I practiced medicine all over the world for 30 years. However, I also have a History degree and I love to teach. So, I guess my answer is that it feels great...
You bunch of trolls, Medellin Government invest in education and urban upgrades to this sites, this is just part of their efforts to make urban living better for this people. Research a little.
so your buildings are made out of mud, the kids and half of the adults are illiterate, and you're a high drug rate city.... yep a huge ass escalator sounds like a perfect fit
wow seriously? what if it breaks down? I live in the metro area of LA and those thing are always breaking down and needing repair. and can even be dangerous, you ever slip on one when it rains? no fun. what a waste of money, and people wonder why people who come to america become so fat? stairs sure, but this this hella nuts they could have used that money on medicine or education, and it seems like it would take the same amount of time or more than walking.
I just dont understand, its like how stupid can this species get, impoverished area+ lack of food, shelter, water, education, etc= A FUCKING ESCALATOR!? No correct me if im wrong but that just doesnt add up, A fucking. Escalator. Thats what these morons have to give... Like can we please just kill the mother fuckers who have such ideas as these, cause its about time we have another genocide but one that makes fucking logical sense. Fuck killing minorities, we need to kill off all the morons!
Medellin is surrounded by hills and many of those areas are really steep. The lack of government organization and lack of city planning, plus poverty has allowed many of those areas to become shanty towns. They used to be very insecure and some might still be, but now the government is trying to improve the living standards in those areas by creating tramways and apparently now this escalators. Unfortunately those people need more employment and education.
It wont last long, its in fucking Colombia. Bet anything that in a month it will be out of service. Its outdoors too just wait till it starts raining it will break for sure.
@tito1894 No kidding. Just make it easier to get up the hill, maybe add some stairs at the most. But this is an overkill. I'm sure there are countless things they needed more than a giant escalator...
@tito1894 It's like "Your children may become very illiterate over the next few months or so, but at least we still have one giant fucking escalator!"
sure that's the popular thing to say with most 3rd world countries, but how do you know it's the government? hell, haven't you seen ESPN's 30 for 30 "the two escobars"? it could be drug money to one of the cartel kingpins old neighborhoods
@tito1894 the poor people had to walk up the stairs for 40 minutes with their sacks of food and thanks to this it takes them now 8 minutes to go up man. this may not sseem much, but it makes life easier
@tito1894 Actually it was aimed at the poor specifically. The Escalator will shorten what used to be a 30 minute walk to about 5 minutes. This HELPS A LOT. This is just one of the things the Colombian government has done to improve the nation.
@tito1894 You are right. However, by installing this escalator on a poor area and not on some fancy shopping centre, is not a bad idea after all. People living there won't feel left alone, as it always the case. Let's just hope the local government won't stop at that, and that when the escalator gets broken, won't be left as such.
@derekjlight its sad that your comment received so many likes. It just goes to show how many ignorant Americans there are out there sitting on their a**es not knowing how hard it is for a little old lady's to climb hundreds of steps to get to a church in order to pray that she had the life most Americans have. So until you pull your head out your uninformed a** stop posting such asinine comments.
@Mikeecco Little old ladies in Medellin are healthier than a 16 year old in America. The old lady has been active all of her life, that is why she is old. The 16 year old eats at the public school and then fast food. Processsed foods and lack of exercise are making Americans die in their 40's.
What the old lady needs is family members to help her!
Just what these people DON'T need: an escalator to reduce their health and Americanize them.
@Mikeecco Yes, the mountain is very steep, but the civilizatiuon has negotiated it for centuries. Time will tell the tale. Hope they don't end up like those in the US who are dependent on the government to exist.
@TheYoungTurdz your right, except for the fact that those mountain sides are extremely steep and winding. Its purpose is not so much for the use of citizens in Medellin, its much more useful for transporting cargo an supplies up and down the mountain side. The escalator takes a city that has been technologically held back for so many years and moves it into a modern age.
what's with the dislike people? it's a great idea

@TheYoungTurdz haha what country doesn't?

@Mikeecco The majority of Americans in the United States.

@TheYoungTurdz don't think for a second that this government can't make it seem like you never existed...

@Mikeecco Only YOU can do that.
And so, my fellow citizens of the world: ask not what your country can do for you - ask what you can do for your country.
