Absolutely magnificent tune! A fantastic rocker with great vocal harmony! One of my favorites. Thanks for posting! The Magnificents were another one of those awesome groups that never got the recognition that they truly deserved.
This cut was a couple of years before Doo-Wop...If you consider that "Still of the Night" by the 5 Satins is credited with being the first real Doo-Wop number.
Did the base part on this with a few different groups around S. Jersey and Philly --starting at age 14. Haven't heard it in years. LOVELOVELOVE it! T h a n k s for posting!
I also heard this when I was 14 years old--Alan Freed played it. I thought it was an astonishing song--very creative. At the end of the song, Freed jibed in, "Ain't got no bread?" as if he didn't know what "bread" meant.
By the way, this was NOT called "doo-wop" back then. This song was WHAT WE MEANT WHEN WE SAID ROCK 'N' ROLL.
I remember hearing this on Don K. Reed's 'Doo-Wop Shop' program on New York's oldies station WCBS-FM 101.1.How time flies!Still, thanks for having this on your channel!
Great post! I just bought the 78 on E-bay and just wanted to hear it cuz it's been awhile... so I found the song right here and it sounds excellent by the way!!! really! So glad you had it here so I could here it. Thanks, you rock~!
I think it's done on like a case by case basis... they haven't censored one of mine in a while now, the last one they cut of mine was All I have to do is dream by the Everly brothers. But this is a song that everyone knows already so I was like.."who cares?"
I was at Johnny Key's book signing "Du-Wop" (ISBN 0-9629061-0-7), back in 1991 and was struck by the fact that he said he had .13 cents in his pocket when a TV pitchman was selling his compilation album for $9.95 a shot. But he was broke and didn't get a dime from it. What he did is in the book. Very interesting.
One of my favorite songs of all time. I'm amazed someone has posted it. Sounds as if all they used was a piano and drum for the background music. I'm #902 who has looked at this. All the others don't know what they're missing! I was just 14 when it came out.
0:20..."we'll make a place behind...for you and me"
Any ideas what that lyric might be?

Thanks Chris...as you know WMG is making it more difficult to postoldies these days cos it seems they've bought a lot of the old labels.

IIRC, the flip side was called "Hiccup." Both sides featured a female lead singer. Thanks for all your efforts, my friend.

I was 15 when this came out, and I still have the original 45. It's a classic! Thank you so much for posting it. (Have you also got "Caddy Bo?")
