For all of Shawn Ray's bitchin' he should have realized he didn't have very good taste in posing music, judging by his creative decision here. If he wanted to go "classy" and get away with it, he should have re-watched how Bob Paris went about it.

I used to think Dorian was the clear winner, but after watching more videos from the 1994 Olympia and specially this one, I have to say that Shawn should have won. Either him or Levrone, but Dorian just didn't have a good physique in my eyes. Dorian best met the criteria of the judges, but in doesn't mean the criteria was correct.

sorry but as great as he is....Levrone was NOT the champ in 02 and nor should he be. If his leg mass were up to snuff he might have taken it. But he just didnt bring his total package to that show. YES he looked incredible and the best in years but he just wasnt the winner. Levrone for some reason always missed big in the olympia. And the year Gunter finished 5th was BRUTAL. oh plz how many times an ex mr olympia came in a horible shape and they gave him the title cuz he was "loved" by most fans allot of which have no idea what to look for in a physique. Its the hardest contest to judge and have proof of it, its not a race where who finishes first wins its what the judges think or who payed them more money.
Shawn Ray is one of a few profi bodybuilders that doesn´t build his muscles as massive as possible contrary of for example Dorian Yates or Ronnie Coleman where, I think, only size matters...That´s why he doesn´t have so many victories.

What I can't stand are the camera angles. Why take a shot from the side of the stage missing all important obvious shots and evidence to why he should of won?

He was great, but better than Flex, he wasn`t.
Due to his narrow structure, he often lost in direct comparisons although he was more complete than most. Nevertheless a fantastic package and always a great routine to display it.
No, Flex wasn`t wide, and I am not at all saying Shawn was `too narrow`. Flex was slightly taller and a few inches can really affect your overall appearance.
Shawn was fantastic, no doubt, but Flex was, in my eyes, somewhat better with his incredibly small joints and full muscle bellies.

Flex`s rear lat spread was weak compared to some other poses. You are right, Shawn had no real weaknesses. I think Flex had a body that made you say `wow!!` Shawn, although extremely complete, lacked this awe- striking appearance.
Most men couldn´t compare to Shawn when he was on, which was most of the time, give him a few inches more, a tad bit more width and you have an unbeatable package.
My thoughts exactly. Flex was awesome, but he definitely had his flaws whereas Shawn didn't have a single flaw and was much more consistent than Flex.
The only problem is...the olympia, even though a physique contest, is not only judged on physique, and never has been. Shawn and flex both had horrible attitudes when they competed, so judges aren't going to give them the title, because they don't want someone reppin the sport that is gonna put it in a bad light, but how levrone never won it is a real mystery...
Well i've heard quite a bit from people that met both ray, and wheeler while they were competing that they were pretty rude and liked to cut people down but all the claims i've heard about flex are from people i know that have been in the business for a longer than i've been alive on the other hand shawn rays attitude has been mentioned by pro's as well, here's a link where quincy taylor says shawn wasn't always a nice guy..

If you have ever seen Shawn Ray in person, you will notice that his calves are much better than they appear to be in magazines.
I saw him training at Gold's in Venice and I was amazed at the size and shape of his calves. He was wearing tights and his calves were out of this world!
you can tell shawn is one of those bodybuilders that used drugs very moderately,and didn't abuse them. you can tell by his physique. In my opinion, he is what a mr. olympia should like like.

You obviously don't know the real story.
Shawn was a massive shit talker behind the scenes and did not respect authority. That's why he never won. He has a perfect, flawless physique but his mouth always kept him from the crown. Flex Wheeler had the same problem.
He needed another inch on his calves and a little more shoulder width. Then I would rate him the best sinnce Sergio Oliva. True point though. The weiders didn't like you unless you were willing to be their yes man. If it came down to physique alone. The Wheeler and Ray should have won.
ill agree with you on the proportions but i still think shawn was better than oliva. Oliva wasn't half the poser shawn was, Oliva squeezed way to hard in all his poses and he just didnt flow. Granted those were the early years and bodybuilding wasnt very established, knowing how to pose could have been tough.
Personally, I prefer the no-nonsense and Herculean posing style of Dorian Yates. But Ray certainly brought a tremendously creative approach and developed a terrific posing routine to complement his aesthetic look.
I have always been a fan of Shawn Ray. His back looks good except his downfall was he was never that wide especially against the other guys. His symmetry was incredible and its a shame that he didn't win in 96 or 97 against Dorian with a torn bicep and tricep. Shawn Ray was robbed at least one of those shows for sure

Shawn Ray has always been in my top 5 list. The others are Frank Zane, Bob Paris, Lee Labrada, and Mohammad Mackawy. These guys had classic physique. I still workout, but I don't follow professional bodybuilding as I used to when I was younger. It has become a freak show. Gorilla type bodybuilders should never outclass michelangelo's creations. We have the "judges" to blame. If judges used common sense as to what bodybuilding should be, 28 inch biceps & zero percent fat won't dictate who wins.

Bodybuilding died in the 90's IMO...it's now turned into a freak show where mass and sheer size are rewarded over the artistic aspect. I don't think many have come close to him in the way of the package he bought to the Bodybuilding staged.

Shawn Ray had a beautiful physique, superb really. But people's opinions differ. For me, size coupled with conditioning is more impressive, and thats what dorian had, thats why he won.
Shawn Ray has always been the most complete body builder I have ever seen. nothing overwhelms anything else on his body, its all in proportion and its all perfectly tied into the other muscles. For me the sport died when shawn lost because it was no longer about having a perfect body, it was about being the biggest guy on stage.

I have watched a few vids, as much of a Shawn fan I am, Yates physique was so massive, like a fucken rock. He deserved it, and if you ever hear the two in interviews Yates is a much better person then Shawn, so I must retract my statements I made earlier

@chinaman432 Levrone was not as complete as Ray. Levrone's back definition never equaled that of his front. People always remember Levrone for his massive Tris and traps. Ray was always known to not have any lagging bodyparts. He was very well balanced and had no bodypart that overshadowed the others.

He was great, but better than Flex, he wasn`t.
Due to his narrow structure, he often lost in direct comparisons although he was more complete than most. Nevertheless a fantastic package and always a great routine to display it.

No, Flex wasn`t wide, and I am not at all saying Shawn was `too narrow`. Flex was slightly taller and a few inches can really affect your overall appearance.
Shawn was fantastic, no doubt, but Flex was, in my eyes, somewhat better with his incredibly small joints and full muscle bellies.

no worries bro, just some friendly discussion. i agree that flex had ridiculous small joints and full muscle bellies, but i think shawn ray was always the more complete bodybuilder. i felt the rear lat spread was always a weak pose for flex whereas shawn ray did not have any weak poses. shawn ray was also much more consistent.

Flex`s rear lat spread was weak compared to some other poses. You are right, Shawn had no real weaknesses. I think Flex had a body that made you say `wow!!` Shawn, although extremely complete, lacked this awe- striking appearance.
Most men couldn´t compare to Shawn when he was on, which was most of the time, give him a few inches more, a tad bit more width and you have an unbeatable package.

My thoughts exactly. Flex was awesome, but he definitely had his flaws whereas Shawn didn't have a single flaw and was much more consistent than Flex.

The only problem is...the olympia, even though a physique contest, is not only judged on physique, and never has been. Shawn and flex both had horrible attitudes when they competed, so judges aren't going to give them the title, because they don't want someone reppin the sport that is gonna put it in a bad light, but how levrone never won it is a real mystery...

Well i've heard quite a bit from people that met both ray, and wheeler while they were competing that they were pretty rude and liked to cut people down but all the claims i've heard about flex are from people i know that have been in the business for a longer than i've been alive on the other hand shawn rays attitude has been mentioned by pro's as well, here's a link where quincy taylor says shawn wasn't always a nice guy..

If you have ever seen Shawn Ray in person, you will notice that his calves are much better than they appear to be in magazines.
I saw him training at Gold's in Venice and I was amazed at the size and shape of his calves. He was wearing tights and his calves were out of this world!

you can tell shawn is one of those bodybuilders that used drugs very moderately,and didn't abuse them. you can tell by his physique. In my opinion, he is what a mr. olympia should like like.

dorian yates was a freak not a body builder shaun ray he always come in at the same weighteach year 206 or 208 and very sharp.He was caught with steroids once and i guest ever since he was on their back burner from winning. He talks a lot and i think he is a good representative for the sport he never holds back.He is one of the few olympians who only train for the mr O yes starchildbt he was at his best in those years More power to you shaun

Doryan is one of the best bodybuilders of the history, but his body was too great. Shawn had great beautiful body, i think the best of all time. I think the biggest couldn´t be always the best, but now it is trend in this great sport, unfortunately

You obviously don't know the real story.
Shawn was a massive shit talker behind the scenes and did not respect authority. That's why he never won. He has a perfect, flawless physique but his mouth always kept him from the crown. Flex Wheeler had the same problem.

He needed another inch on his calves and a little more shoulder width. Then I would rate him the best sinnce Sergio Oliva. True point though. The weiders didn't like you unless you were willing to be their yes man. If it came down to physique alone. The Wheeler and Ray should have won.

ill agree with you on the proportions but i still think shawn was better than oliva. Oliva wasn't half the poser shawn was, Oliva squeezed way to hard in all his poses and he just didnt flow. Granted those were the early years and bodybuilding wasnt very established, knowing how to pose could have been tough.

Personally, I prefer the no-nonsense and Herculean posing style of Dorian Yates. But Ray certainly brought a tremendously creative approach and developed a terrific posing routine to complement his aesthetic look.

I have always been a fan of Shawn Ray. His back looks good except his downfall was he was never that wide especially against the other guys. His symmetry was incredible and its a shame that he didn't win in 96 or 97 against Dorian with a torn bicep and tricep. Shawn Ray was robbed at least one of those shows for sure

Shawn Ray has always been in my top 5 list. The others are Frank Zane, Bob Paris, Lee Labrada, and Mohammad Mackawy. These guys had classic physique. I still workout, but I don't follow professional bodybuilding as I used to when I was younger. It has become a freak show. Gorilla type bodybuilders should never outclass michelangelo's creations. We have the "judges" to blame. If judges used common sense as to what bodybuilding should be, 28 inch biceps & zero percent fat won't dictate who wins.

Bodybuilding died in the 90's IMO...it's now turned into a freak show where mass and sheer size are rewarded over the artistic aspect. I don't think many have come close to him in the way of the package he bought to the Bodybuilding staged.

Shawn Ray had a beautiful physique, superb really. But people's opinions differ. For me, size coupled with conditioning is more impressive, and thats what dorian had, thats why he won.

Shawn Ray has always been the most complete body builder I have ever seen. nothing overwhelms anything else on his body, its all in proportion and its all perfectly tied into the other muscles. For me the sport died when shawn lost because it was no longer about having a perfect body, it was about being the biggest guy on stage.
To me half a bicep and a blown up stomach does not represent a perfect body

I have watched a few vids, as much of a Shawn fan I am, Yates physique was so massive, like a fucken rock. He deserved it, and if you ever hear the two in interviews Yates is a much better person then Shawn, so I must retract my statements I made earlier
