@FanFromEurope: Yes, Buckethead can play, he's got technique and skills, he's probably a worthy fill-in for any major big name rock artist, but he appeals to only a crowd into "wierd." The truth is, Gary can whip-out technique and (melodic) speed with ANYONE, he proved that especially in his younger years. He had nothing to prove in his later career. The thing with Gary, that Buckethead will never have, is an ability to connect with the common listener on a more basic and personal level.
I once got the privilege of meeting Gary after a gig in Newcastle (NE England). Even though I could tell he was really exhausted, he still signed my Still got the blues album. I also got the chance to tell him he was my hero, and thanked him for his music, inspiration and time for me. It was brief, but I didn't blame him, after he'd spent 2 hours meting my face off with licks. He really did give it everything on stage. Taken well before his time. See ya soon Gary.
Know what ? Hows that for a bit of improv ! Loads of classic Gary in there with a nod to his influences , Hendrix , Albert King , Peter Green , Santana , Buddy Guy , Albert Collins and many more i'm sure . Left some great stuff fo us to enjoy
Lost count the amount of times I've seen Gary play over the last 31 years, but it strays into double figures somewhat!. Actually, this may the best and the most interesting playing I've heard him deliver.
He really keeps from playing too fast, for a long time, and plays more subdued and dynamic than I have ever heard him do.
It seems he finally got the point, which Albert King tried to put across to him 20 years ealier.
And when he turns up the heat in the end, then it works that much better.
Thanks Gary....
