  • oh cool animation of second life for Ohio University..

  • The SL idea is fascinating to say the least and has a ton very beneficial outcomes for distance learners, people who are unable to make it to the campus, and also students that do attend class on campus. It concerns me that it is another bit of technology that removes face to face interaction however. Also it really creates a need for Student Affairs practitioners to see how SA services will translate to the virtual campus. Is there something that will be lost in translation?

  • thumbs up

  • @melego:

Are you serious?!That is just nasty!

    @ladcoy:

    It's outrage not outreach!

plus in SL college you don't get kicked out or whateves.

  • Go to planned parenthood racism, eugenics, exposed on youtube.

  • wow :O

  • yes content of second life is owned and created by its member so for a designer might have been paid to build that campus. and that campus might make money buy renting out its exhibition space.

  • Basic sl membership is free and sufficient

    .

  • That is awesome! I love Second Life!

  • I like Second Life. I could be a virtual slut without getting any actual STDs.:)lol.

  • ooer. so if they use this as a tool do they pay their students' subscriptions or...? i mean, all we have is Carmen, so...

  • I personally believe that second life is really bad invention that seems good. Im not saying it's not bad entirely but it will keep people stuck in their homes. Just like instant messaging. It will kill the art of conversation. It has been stabbed by instint messaging. Now, it will die!

  • Second Life is a refuge for those of us who live with physical challenges of all sorts from those who either have to us signs to talk to those who use typed words or written to communicate. With voice now part of Second Life it opens a world of communication to all of us that have difficulties operating in a normal world but it also gives me oportunity to meet people from everywhere i might not meet otherwise.

  • @finnsia your an idiotjust cause you play secon life doesnt mean you are gonna just sit there and play all day...you play 4 a while...

what if you cant walk...what if you have a speech inpediment.... what if you have no physical problem or mental and you just what to get away from this horrible world.... think about that moron...

  • I will come

  • Nice. I'm going to try and talk my University into doing this.

  • Can you please tell me the benifits of doing this?

  • For people who can't make it to a real campus because of: traffic, long commute, busy schedule, needing to take care of kids, or the subject of interest is not taught in nearby schools. There's a number of reasons. Also, teaching in Second Life can take on the role of a simulation.

  • The best way to learn is not simply by simulating a classroom, but say, you want to teach about ancient Rome or Greece, you create architecture and furniture from those eras, and even dress that way. You remember more when you combine visual, auditory AND text. Many people don't learn as well from just reading or lectures. I've attended a real campus long enough to be a Senior, and

  • The full benefit of SL is what can be made their to augment teaching, those of us who have been frustrated by crowds, people, politics can find the way that helps us to learn best about the world at large. With voice and visual it gives people advantages to learning that just going to a classroom some place loses. It doesnt matter what anyone wants to teach it can be actually built in second life. What is lost is physical contact, but what is gained is a safe way to meet people not just learning

  • my school just recently started to promote SL all of my teachers office hours are held through SL on a sim thats a replica of our classes you have to get an group invite from your professor to enter the sim the office hours are held through mic

  • That is phenomenal! Which school do you attend?

  • what are the coordenants?

  • The real Ohio University I attended IS in fact a great place to learn and explore the world. It is multi-dimensional, fully textured, unpredictable and REAL. Its where I unexpectedly learned about modern dance and, unrelatedly, learned how to dance on a saloon table singing "Jeramiah was a bull frog ..." and then discuss international politics with a prof in a side booth. Too cool. I'm a Bobcat made of flesh, blood and adrenelin.

  • In the future there won't be any need for REAL social interaction, we'll all just be blobs behind our computers living a virtual life where pimply nerds act like gangsters...

    Well, maybe not.

OSU is better than OU though. Go bucks!

  • Universities are becoming increasingly more technological, which I think is great. By the way, this video reminds me of my recurring flying dream.

  • Isn't it so maddening when you wake up from a flying dream? I have them too and hate it when they end :-)

  • @crkeesey Ever had a lucid flying dream?

  • i had second life for a while, but had so much trouble getting into the campus. class of 2011 (hopefully, maybe add 3 or 4 more years to it, lol)

  • Ohio University is the best kept secret in the country. Never have I had more fun or been to such a beautiful place and met the most amazing people.

Not to mention a top notch education. Everyone who goes there should consider themselves extremely lucky and embrace every second of it. God I miss it.

  • Very Cool! Glad to see my alma mater on the cutting edge of technology. OHIO 1804. Ohio's first and finest institution of higher education!

  • Wow, this is so cool. HOWEVER, nothing can replace that beatiful campus and it's people. I'm a proud Bobcat and that place gave me so much more than a degree, don't screw yourself - go to school and live on main campus, you'll never regret it...best years of my life.

  • or map

    please tell me

  • what sl is this

  • WOW, as an OU grad and a new media expert/author -- I must say this is AMAZING...we're talking video series here-- hmm whoever did this -- contact me and I'll option the rights for online episodes and take you HOLLYWOOD....we have lots of OU alums right here in tinseltown. Joyce Schwarz, joycecom@aol.com

  • please, were can i download this video? crkeesey can u help me. thanks

  • u can use RealPlayer to download and play vids from YouTube. It works pretty well (one of the few good points about RealPlayer).

  • great stroy! just awsome!

  • does this resemble the real ohio campus, or has it been redesigned for 2nd life... someone tell me!

  • As an OU grad, this definitely resembles the OU campus! Cool to see it in SL.

  • wow that is pretty cool

  • Great stuff, I am proud to be affiliated with OU. Talk about taking education to the next level. Here to be whatever you want to be and this technology makes it possible as no other. Is there a place for F2F, sure...each one has its own special niche.

  • What is interesting to me is that while most of the worlds population will never set foot on the Ohio University real-life campus, hundreds well, uh, millions could potentially attend and learn virtually in Second Life. Now that's what I call Outreach!

  • well second life is supposed to invole the real world alot from big companies holding board meetings. I hear second life is good and i have not played it yet but i will very soon

  • this is like sims . I hate sims.

    Anyway go ohio university.

  • It is not like the sims.. You just look similar, anyways no one probably like you so piss off. My sister is in OU.

  • this is messed up, if i want to go to a UNI, then i want to be on campus, not on my computer. unsettling....

  • It's a marketing medium, not replacing the classroom. It's an innovative way to put yourself out there for potential students around the nation to see in an interactive world.

  • that is so awesome! we're doing the same thing at UGA - see you in world

  • surely this is a joke

  • people need to get a life and discover the real world they live in

  • There are indeed SL users who are very much in-tune with their real lives, matt. But most of what you see in here are the extreme cases. I love a real beach and spend more time on it than at the beaches in Second Life, but I also love being inworld for what it is. Life is all about balance.

  • yep

  • yes, I agree.

  • with mckeownmatt

  • okay you guys made my school look so great. i wanna just go back to Ohio University right now!!! Go Bobcats

  • screw the elevater ill just climb threw the window! lol

  • nice video!!

  • wonderful

  • Were those two female students pawing each other?

  • No they were chatting. When someone is speaking to you in SL, they appear to be typing on an invisible keyboard. You can also buy chat keyboards in SL so they appear as you are typing as well.

  • Hmm...interesting. I'll just type it up on my invisible typewriter. *types in mid air while humming*

  • AAAAA I WANT THIS THING!!!!!!!! :)

  • great stroy! impressive university!

  • awsome!

  • I showed this to my wife, who's an English/Danish teacher. She's in love with SL now hah..

  • What happend to Mem Aud on the Green? Looks like there is another new building there now.

  • Great video. I think this is a wonderful demonstration about how education can move into the 3Dweb and still retain our high educational values. Great job!

  • Great job on this! I think you captured the difference between real world and virtual world education very well. Keep it up...
