For me, this performance is OK, not earth-shattering. I think the simple truth of the matter is that this piece is just naturally performed BETTER by a competent Mezzo, such as C. Bartoli.
I do not agree with you... FOR ME, this representation seems more for celebration and she seems beeing lazy with her force and voice... i guess for you Bartoli's grotesque rendition comes from the fact of her face mimic, but i believe that you can not sing this piece without force...
A good version for sure...but like someone else said, it's not being sung in the style it was intended. This a baroque piece, and as wonderful as her voice is, this version is simply bland. Bartoli's is much better in opinion. Definitely understand why some prefer this version though. I recently saw a Griselda that was bland like this. Beautiful but TOTALLY not as intended.

I don't like Cecilia Bartoli singing this or many other pieces, she pretends to sings at speed which is at the very least close to the human limit, but as a results she sounds like nothing else but barking all aria long, with dramatic fluctuations in the intonation that sometimes make you want to turn the music off. On the other end, this rendition is somewhat "Romantic polished", nice if it was Mozart, but Vivaldi? Naaa... little credible. Wonderful voice though!
Bartoli se la lleva de calle. Y a Kirkby también. It's useless to dethrone Her Majesty Bartoli... All the renditions of this aria are completely blunt in comparison with the feast of fireworks and gymnastic-like vocal ability of our cara Roman goddess.
This soprano is wonderful in an Albioni aria I listened to, but here she is sometimes out of tune and a bit amateurish. The piece is beyond her, and I feel bad about making the criticism.
La Bartoli is an interesting phenomenon (sorry, all her fans !) She IS a great singer, no doubt, but... Now she is absolutely breathtaking... and now she seems to be - well, just totally lacking the sense of style or something.
Ha, this aria is actually much more beautiful than I could actually hear in previous recorded performances. I think she, Maria Keohane, deserves a lot of credit for making it sound so clear and musically richer... Thanks for posting!
No doubt her rendition of this piece is vocally technically superior to Cecilia's, I still feel there's little musicality and drama compared to Cecilia's version which I feel is neccessary in a piece like this.
Even metaphorical winds can be violent! The song should still reflect the soul's internal agitation, since the metaphor was chosen for a reason. While this is nicely sung, I much prefer the passionate and expressive way that Bartoli sings it, and I don't think there is anything grotesque about it.
This is a very clear rendition and doesn't digress from the score that much. Bartoli's rendition is brutal. Until I heard this I thought Veronica Cangemi's version stood out.
Yes, I suppose Kirkby is the most famous of the HIP singers who have recorded this... but who can say what is truly "Vivaldian" three centuries on? ;)
@TheCrazyCello Yes I think a bit like Emma Kirkby, but perhaps a hybrid between Kirby and Veronica Cangemi...which is intend a formitable thing (I think Maria used Cangemi's version as basis for this...and what a good basis)....Really Nice....thanks another good voice...now how does it compare to Anna Bonitatibus's??? Her jump up at 5:30 is interesting ...Thanks CrazyCello for this.

I find this too slow and... boring. Don't mind about it, it's just what I think.
I prefer Genaux and Bartoli.

So wonderfully free, like it was no big deal at all - technically, that is.

Style is so Emma Kirkby's - bland and expressionless.
