..this album was my first contact with Jethro tull..1969....the followed Aqualung..and thick as a brick...all milesones in music...still great music after all this years...lLOVE and RESPECT...
Surprised that nobody has mentioned that the song is about being in prison (although maybe only a metaphor....). When I was living in Britain, my English friends pointed it out to me. Being "on the inside" is British slang for being in jail. Seemed to be pretty well known to them that Ian had that in mind. Makes the lyrics even more interesting in my opinion, just another layer of nuance, and why Tull is still my favorite band.
I've just watched the 'history of' DVD. Excellent, but a bit sad to see how they splintered around this era. They had such a great mix of jazz, blues - and the rest at that time. I switched off them a bit around and after Aqualung. The new direction seemed too commercial and basic - musically.
I heard this in a noisy Student Union bar in 1970. I could tell it was Jethro Tull but could not hear any words so I could not identify the title. The tune has buzzed round my head on and off for 40 years and with the help of YouTube I was finally able to identify the song.
You could say that this tune has been the sound track of my life.
@jhelmsuploads As members came and went they evolved. Personally, I don't think any one Jethro Tull album is leaps and bounds better than the rest - they are all just different flavors evolved from the same great core essence.
though personally i feel that the core essense ie benefit/standup was better than what it evolved into later, but thats just me, you did make a good point though and im sure that most people would agree with you,
Very deep and profound lyrics indeed. Jethro Tull was my favorite group when I was growing up. As the the years went by and the albums kept coming I just seemed to connect and relate to so much of what he wrote. I've seen them many times over the years, as recently as last year and I just always felt that Ian Anderson, indeed the whole band was so underrated. Anyway, thanks for posting this song and thanks for the memories.
very deep and profound lyrics, written ob a tour in 1970, when Andeson wanted to have a break from all the pressure , and start digging into his soul - enjoying more of his inside than the outer experiences
Kids nowadays -[ seed burns? wtf?] Hey, I remember trying to get the scratch out of my record, put the damn thing in a microscope, take a sewing needle, switch to decaf, scrape ding out of groove. Viola
The entire album was awesome but this song has always been one of my very favorites. The lyrics are somewhat simple but absolutely beautiful, they spoke to my heart the 1st time I heard it.
can,y you just pictuer these guy,s sitting around some pub.i love this album!!!!took a road trip to savannah ga. we wore this out........love ...............
Inside All the places I've been make it hard to begin to enjoy life again on the inside, but I mean to. Take a walk around the block and be glad that I've got me some time to be in from the outside, and inside with you. I'm sitting on the corner feeling glad. Got no money coming in but I can't be sad. That was the best cup of coffee I ever had. And I won't worry about a thing because we've got it made, here on the inside, outside so far away. And we'll laugh and we'll sing
Ian Anderson disowned this song when discussing it some years later. As I recall he said he had no idea what his motivation was, what the song was about, who it was for, or where his head was when he wrote it. Now I am fat, old bald with four teenage kids But Benefit is still just about my favourite Tull album even 35 years later , because when I hear it I'm young wild and carefree again.
@Ingramdumpkiss i heard this album in India while trekking up in the himalayan mountains, smoking dope and hippie style hair. I think this was in early 70's. Benefit is mu favorite album too. Yes, I have enjoyed Acqualung, thiick as a brick but benefit beats them all. I listen to benefit album while trekking in the rainforests of costa rica, rolling a fat one and listen to the howl of the howler monkeys.
Ah yes, the nectar of all Jethro Tull tracks. Hands down, my favourite song of them, ever. Thanks for uploading it, it's stupid to put A CD on just for one song :)
Ohh!! How I've managed to live without a CD copy of 'Benefit' for so many years I don't know. Takes me right back to my longhaired adolescence! But apart from mere nostalgia, a great 'choon off a fine album. Each band member contributes greatly to the whole effort. A song with lots of texture and rhythmic 'holes' to make it even more interesting. And to think Tull got pigeonholed as a heavy metal band some years later!?! Methinks not.
Remeber this as a much looked forward- to single. Didn't do much in the charts. Apparently, he had a a cold when he did the vocals [interview NME 71].

....para mí "BENEFIT", junto a "AQUALUNG" y "THICK AS A...", constituye una trilogía
insuperable de este grupo, por la calidad armónica, melódica y poética, que me contagió
en la dorada década de los '70.
