You know what the media does? it twists things and distorts it, although learning has been around since the begining of time, it hasn't always been in the form of school, in fact school only became compulsory in the late 1800's early 1900's...
Long ago, everyone used to learn this way and it has finally began to crawl it's way back to the top...
Algebra, hmmm... how many of you use it today...we should ask ABC does knowing who George Washington help you with your job today or are you using Algebra in your job today. You know she isn't! To be honest who cares about Shakespear unless you want to learn the theatre etc...and even then, does that help actors today? I am not a radical unschooler, but I am not hardcore on textbooks, reports. zif my children aren't intrested it is just a waste of time
@chocoloverxx100 I know alot of people who WENT to school and don't benefit society or support themselves. In fact what happens to people when they do go to college, have a job, then lose their job and end up delivering pizza. (Larry Crown movie is a good example) Study history if you are going to be a historian, science if you are going to be scienctist, I do make sure my kids know their math, decimals, fractions, + an x' this you use in your life everyday, reading writing, arithmetic
@Pooua In some cases, yes. I do. Homeschool (of all varieties)/private tutoring/private schools are all options. This news clip has an evident bias, and it shows only sections of the many hours I assume were shot in order to support that bias. Many of our history's most famous well-educated people were not schooled formally, or had a very short time in the classroom. Washington, Carnegie, Edison, etc. They learned how to read, and then they learned what interested them. That method still works.
My realization is: you can't project your expectations onto your kids. Even the woman in this video is doing this, the exact opp. of what she's trying to represent. A good example of 'following the child' -ok, you want to add peanut butter to noodles? Let's look up some recipes for that (knowing, but not saying, that it's a well-known Asian staple). Don't just let them do what they want. Take time, slow it down and make it relate. Unschooling or not, as a parent you are their guide to the world.
As a mom who is blessed to be able to educate my children at home, this "unschooling" should NEVER be under the umbrella of homeschooling! It is an excuse to not parent and refusing to put forth time and effort to make sure that their kids are equipped to be able to function in any capacity in life!
And yes, my kids know what they desire to be when they grow up. Whether or not they actually accomplish those things, it is wonderful to see them have a drive, dreams and passions for something!
Speaking as a education professional--just showing up to school doesn't ensure learning. I have taught many 9th graders who stumbled over basic multiplication facts.
The knowledge that Dana Martin so easily dismisses is what constitutes our culture. W/o that knowledge, her children cannot be informed citizens. They won't know where we came from as a people and they will have less comprehension of issues facing us as a society. They would be unfit voters and mere savages. We see too much of this amongst people who are schooled, who learn only enough to get thru required classes; the no schoolers are that much farther behind. Likely, she is raising moochers.
@Pooua My family is Albanian. I went to American public schools. So Albanian culture was not taught. I know more about Albanian culture than American culture. Not to mention American culture and history is taught with bias in schools. Your accusations are unfounded and reflect poorly on the education you received.
@UnschoolingEagle Do you know who Edison was and what he did? How about Henry Ford, George Washington or Thomas Jefferson? Do you know where the Suez Canal is? How about Pompeii? Do you know how Iraq, Iran or Israel were created? These are all part of Western Culture, things you aren't likely to learn by chasing rabbits around the back yard.
@Pooua If you think a kid needs to go to school to learn any of that then you aren't thinking normally. That is what school does, it makes people stupid.
@Pooua That is how this was edited. The media is being biased as always. There was another news story about unschooling. The host said, "We asked the boy a simple math question and this is how he responded." It then showed the boy stuttering and confused. Do you want to know that the question was? It was 47x8. Who can answer that on cue? Let alone a 12 year old boy. Ask any 12 year old, whether schooled or not and most couldn't.
@UnschoolingEagle You talk about the media being biased, but you are also biased. You even named yourself as an advocate. At least the media are trained professionals in reporting news.
Years ago, I met a family of Irish Gypsies (long story). I expressed surprise that the children we out "earning" money (read, hustling strangers). They told me their children are home schooled. OK, I know home schooling, & this isn't it. What these people are doing is pandering to laziness.
@Pooua Just like a politician you didn't confront any of my arguments and just resorted to talking about something irrelevant. We are done here. Good day.
@UnschoolingEagle I agree with you, when my children in fact anyone who is put on the spot especially tv my mind wouldn't be on cue either. In fact I think I will ask a 15 year that lives next door who is public schooled and see how quickly she answers it.
@great8thday I couldn't answer it right and I am in college! Even the host of the show apologized to the family because the editing and report was biased as hell.
@Pooua That's what wee need. Challenges to the status quo! How necessary is it to know some random president in history. (who is actually shown with bias in American Schools).
@thegivingtreeabc Yes, but this video is not about home schooling; it is about non-schooling, as it plainly states in the video. The children choose what they are going to do that day. Now, for me, that might have worked, because I had my nose in science and tech books all the time, but even I would not have chosen a well-rounded curriculum on my own, at least until I was much older.
I love how the reporter is criticizing her work. But the lady just keeps making an excuse that leads to No common sense. This actually motivates me to stay in school.
That last comment was a rather pathetic retort as an attempt to discredit the unschooling philosophy. The attacks and criticisms, the shock and horror, are all based on irrational fears and false premises. If we truly believe in unschooling, we should make no attempts to defend it or convince others of its merits; instead, perhaps we should allow others to grapple with their strong negative emotional responses and come to their own understanding in their own time in their own way & they will.
im sorry if i offend anyone, but i think this is bullshit, kids need to have some amount of formal education, basic things at least need to be taught, geez what are you going to do if you can't multiply 2 by 2
if you cant even solve a simple algebra than what kind of logic do you have? I might have skipped a few algebra levels but its only because the math was so easy that I grasped higher algebra very quickly. Child that cant solve math will have trouble solving problems. Language is logic, logic is math which means language is math. We use math everyday, stupid people think other wise...sucks to be stupid I guess
although I agree that this report is unfairly biased, I'm not sure how well this method of life style will raise children. Though, I think there is a certain element of not thinking that the mainstream system is good for your kids that we should respect here.
Unschooling should be illegal. I mean, they're just children, it's not their fault that they're not gonna ever have a decent education and will never have a good career or have a secure future. When I was 6, of course I would have rather played and stayed up late and just do what I want... but I went to school and was taught to do well, and now I have a university education. If I never was taught to read, do math, learn history, have opportunities, I would NOT be where I am today.
@LexieDeaves Most teachers don't even know that what they have learned themselves is not the truth. So don't be too hard on them. It's difficult for anyone to accept that people have lied to you your whole life. We are all in this together. But some have open their eyes already. The rest will open theirs if they will be ready. And it's up to us, those who are awaken or are awakening, to present them some info. They'll be needing time to digest that info. That's what I think.
@ExperiencedGhost I agree 100% and I am not too hard on them but I just dont want my future kids to know false information. this keeps them from thier future. theere not goona get a job at all. peopel are gonna look down to them all the time because if someone comes up to them sayin " hey can u calculate sommething for me" they dont know nothing
Ummm....Id hate to grow up without being able to keep up with the "real world". But at the same time its not that bad. Its just that in the future, id be tough on them if they never had the "certain" education. Or not being able to reach dreams because their parents never let them go to school :/
rubbish they should go to school, this is teaching the kids they can do anything they want with no RESPECT. These kids are not learning much at all. All they are learning is that they can do what they want with no rules, and what planet are the parents on. they need to come back down to earth.
@s2rainbow Totally agree. This little blurb was totally biased - as are a few of the posters here that obviously could use a little more education themselves. We're seriously thinking of pulling our 8 yr old out of the school system, because like most home-schoolers or un-schoolers, he has fallen through the cracks of the current (100 yr old) education system. I urge all readers here to view this video...

One problem with this is that kids need discipline. Simple fact. There are going to be times in life when you can't always do or have what you want and you have to to control yourself. This is something most kids learn through school and parental discipline. I understand homeschooling, though I think it's healthier for kids to be socialized. But you can't just let your kids be uneducated. Skills like simple multiplication are things you WILL need to know in life.
Ok...I agree that keeping your kids happy is important but honestly do you really have to keep them from school? School isnt just for learning, its for a kid to grow and be social. Its to make friends and to be able to get into the college you want. If you dont go to school, then then you have no job and end up on the streets. Not being educated is not healthy for a kid. Im 11 and I feel this way.
@MrsPinkElephant123 i agree with you, the majority of home school kids end off being socially akward because they dont know how to act with their peers
ok so i can agree with respecting children as people and not making them fear your supreme rule but be your best friends instead. so long as the information is always easily available to them when they want to learn something, instead of being forced,i think it's cool.i would however expose them to wonderfull things along the way so thier interest could be sparked to learn something.knowledge is good.forced knowledge is usualy forgotten in spit.
My daughter is unschooled and I can see how much she learns everyday. She is nearly 1 and a half years old now. I don't expect her to mysteriously stop learning at 5 years old! Have a look at 'Learn Free' (an unschooling documentary) for a quick look at the other side of the issue. And live your life the way you choose.
This interview was done with quite a bias it seems. Unschooled kids become very innovative, intelligent, and creative adults. These are the kids who will make things happen. And unlike many of us, they are happy and not mindless drones following orders. I've been researching this for quite some time now and am convinced it is truly the way we are meant to learn and learn best!
I was just thinking that. I agree (for the most part) with "free range" children, but "unschooling" is the stupidest thing I've ever heard of. This is why I am convinced that all those who home school should be required to have a degree in Early Childhood Education. -.-
Early childhood education degrees, in terms of education, covers pre-kindergarten through third or fifth grade depending on the school giving you the degree. And obviously, not everybody can "handle" the first five years, when most child abuse/child murders happen to kids under the age of 4, and it requires a license and training to open your own daycare center.
i feel bad for the kids because when there mum dies they wont b able to get a job and take care of them selves i agree with the fun but fun is better if you know how hard you worked for it..... they dont :P
What a concept... "Doesn't a child need to know who George Washington, and FDR and JFK were?" Wow. How American of this news reporter. Cause THAT'S the main concern here, geez.

I was just thinking that. I agree (for the most part) with "free range" children, but "unschooling" is the stupidest thing I've ever heard of. This is why I am convinced that all those who home school should be required to have a degree in Early Childhood Education. -.-

@monny287 What on Earth does ECE have to do with the other years of life from six to eighteen? Anybody can handle the first five years!

@bettyjeanmarino

What a concept... "Doesn't a child need to know who George Washington, and FDR and JFK were?" Wow. How American of this news reporter. Cause THAT'S the main concern here, geez.

College?? Without proper education, it would be almost impossible to succeed in any sort of institution
MusicLover366 5 months ago
Yes, because school does such a wonderful job of preparing children for college - that's why the majority of high school graduates drop out, lol.
