Are you sure about that? The 1973 oil crisis is what made mpg matter after a barrel of oil skyrocketed to almost $120(adjusted for inflation) barrel. Because of the crisis Japans Honda and Toyota gained foothold with their cheap and fuel efficient cars in the US car market which remains and is growing today.

Design flaws:

1 distributes some part of trailer load on the roof of the car and you can actually bend the roof by sitting on it, so the column supporting are neither strong enough.

2 the distance between the hinge and lower front end of trailer; so it can go along with only smaller wheelbase cars.

3 The height of the roof is important, otherwise the trailer may tilt in front or rear direction about the pitch axis.

I fix your flaws:

1. the hitch is attached to the roof at the edges like all roof racks not in the middle of the roof.

2. a better hitch on the trailer could extend out for longer cars

3. a raised hitch on the car can adjust for lower roofs.

Trailers (all kinds) can be extremely dangerous. There were probably a lot of safety concerns, especially for a trailer designed to fit on such a lightweight vehicle.
