Lucky our talking budgie!

I wonder why people don't teach them to say things like, "Hello, everybody" or "Hello (names of people)." It's always "pretty bird! Who's a pretty boy!" which doesn't make sense when THEY say it. If I ever get a budgie I want to teach it to say "Hi, Caitlin. . . Hi, Ryan. . . Hi, Erica. . . Hi, Lauren. . . " etc. and make my grandkids jump.

@PitlanePhotos Is your budgie a male or female? I haven' heard of the female budgies talking at all. My mother has a female, she was raised as a baby from our 2 budgies, and she doesn't talk. We talk to him every day, and repeat the same words and phrases over and over to him, he loves hearing familar words. Lately he's been saying: Are you mom's baby bird? It's cute..:) Good luck, and if it's a male, keep trying, ours was about 5-6 months before he talked.

Thanks for all the great comments!! Lucky says over 100 words and phrases now... we think he's getting smarter every day... this video was taken when he first started talking. The other video that we have on here has some of his newer words but it's not as clear as I'd like. Hopefully I'll get an updated video on soon.

can someone please help me,

i have a budgie, a yellow male, i cant even get him on my hand, when ever i put my hand in his cage he starts flying like crazy around the cage, i really just wanna have him on my hand at least or just pet him, even when i try petting him, he flys in his cage

The same happens to mine. I've read up, and apparantly you are not supposed to stick your hand in his cage because that is his territory. Instead-and I have yet to do this- maybe you should open the cage and play one of these birds here on Youtube singing and chirping. It might take a while, so maybe read a book while he decides. He might come out to investigate and indulge in the foreign noise. ;)

Yes this bird is English Canadian. He started talking before we put the female in. After he didn't talk as much, the female died last year and he doesn't stop taling now. He says way more things than this video shows. I need an update.. He says I taught I taw a puddy tat(Bugs Bunny..lol..Merry Christmas..Happy New Year..You're not susposed to bite..wa ya doin? Lucky wanna come out, lucky want some pepsi..lots more besides.. We are from Newfoundland, Canada so our words are more slang..lol

I'm not sure if it's easier or if they are smarter. I've never heard of female budgies talking..and the males will never talk with a mate in the cage. They also say don't place mirrors in the cage if you want them to talk.

Um, my budgie has a mirror in his cage, and he can say 50 different words... He actually speaks to his mirror a lot, so I think it has helped him. He also has a mate, so.. Sorry, but I think you're wrong...

And also, a female I had could speak. She only said 3 words, but still, she spoke.

I'm just speaking from experience. When the female was in the cage with him..he stopped talking. The female never talked at all. She laid eggs..my mom has took the baby which turned out to be female, and she doesn't talk. I've found the mirror to be a distraction for mine..but that's just me.maybe if they could talk before the mirror was placed in the cage it would be different. That is great that you have a female that talks also...I don't think that's very common. I'm no expert..lol

Hehe, ok. Well, my budgie (Fluff) has always had a mirror in his cage, right from the start. I think it actually depends on the individual (the bird) if they are to talk. Naturally, intelligent birds finds it easier to learn, and to talk. ^^ Not all budgies can learn how to... Which is a shame.

both male and female budgies are capable of learning to talk, but for some reason, it's A LOT easier to teach a male to talk than a female oh well...
