Hmm... Johnny didn't write this song. Roy Clark performed it before him but I think someone else wrote it. Guess that explains the "Oklahoma" reference.
He sang at my grandparents wedding (two poor sharecroppers) when he was a nobody. Always wondered about that story my grandma told me growing up, that when Cash's family went out to pick cotton, Johnny was playing the guitar... said his family would get upset with him but he told them "I'm not going to die pickin' cotton"...something like that. They thought he was throwing his life away. He wanted to marry a local girl and her daddy told her no, that "Johnny Cash would never amount to anything."
My step-dad got me into this song. When he picked me up for my week visit he would ALWAYS play this song in the car and I LOVE it. One of the greatest classics. :D Keep rockin' on Johnny!
We actually have large reserves of coal, even having a Coal county whose county seat is Coalgate, but it's dirty-burning, for the most part and therefore not as viable an energy source as our natural gas and oil.
not as good as the roy clark version but i like the strong guitar as a replacement to the harmonica

@ChurchOfTheWay I guess this song kind of confirms all of Grandma's stories. They all came from the same area of Arkansas.

Even though, he's talkin' about Oklahoma in this song.

@ChurchOfTheWay I don't think they ever hung Johnny either... but I could be wrong.
Okay... I'm done.
