They could have had Rita get captured and tortured like Lumen was and then want revenge. That way she would understand why Dexter does what he does. Instead they killed her off. Maybe Julie Benz wanted to go???

I don't think he cut her leg. I believe he slit her throat. That's what it looked like and I think that's what Lithgow said he did in a recent interview.

I agree with you! It's not just because I will miss Rita but I expected something big and suprising not shockingly sad! I was hoping maybe Rita killed Elliot and Dexter walks in on it or something. Anything but that ending- the worse part was what they left to the imaginations. Way creepy.
