@theleftysband The Univox hi-flier and this Eastwood Hi-flier is a copy of the mosrite guitar lol. But this guitar is really epic looking when its upside down cuz it look like it is the right way when it is upside down only the pickguard gives it away. I would do it if i was to flip a guitar. Remember to flip the pickups upside down too!
Brian Greenway is one of the best guitarist I have ever known. Love these demonstration vids. Makes me want all of these guitars, though I wouldn't be able to play them like that! lol
I bought this guitar about 2 years ago as I had a Mosrite Ventures model in the late 60's. Not bad for the money- nice looking, but not enough quality for actual gigs.
@dubk311 They must have halted production on them because I wanted to order one directly from their site and I was told they don't make left handed models. I managed to get a Classic 6 and a Sidejack though.
At first: This isn't a Univox copy. I bought one (Phase 3) and there are many differences!
Neck: The Eastwood neck is fat. The Univox neck is thin like paper and plays like butter.
Sound: Eastwoods P'90 have a nice clean sound, but effects are not useful =Feedback. Univoxs Matsumoku Humbucker are clean and distorted nice, but they are also a lil bit feedback friendly. watch Cobain videos
My suggestion: get a univox, not this cheap "China" crap.
I played one of those in a guitar shop in New Haven CT. All I know is I loved it . The P-90s behave more like humbuckers . I did like the hardtail over the deluxe though.
I bought one of these and I really like it, it doesnt sound anything like this demo but it still sounds really good. the neck is fat but still playable and thing is really nice to look at. I recommend it
not any more thats true, a couple years ago i bought a use '69 japanese reissue blue competition Mustang from a local guitar shop in my area for $689 i think, thats was steal compared to the prices youd get for it in other places like ebay or a big franchise guitar retail store.
i ordered of these hiflyers from Eastwood over the phone for $399 and its just about as quality an instrument as the mustang.
its a reissue by Eastwood of the Univox Kurt played but with updated materials. It's a good guitar i have one and im very satisfied with it. its is solid as fuck, very hard to break. nice rich earthy tone because of the basswood body and the pickups are surprisingly good as well (although the pickup cover on the bridge pickups keeps falling off on mine, if this happens to you and you don't care how it looks, then its nothing nothing some glue or tape cant fix...)
Yeah, I played one and it was OK. Compared to a Squier Semi-Hollow Tele (Which, In my mind has a comparable sound to a Mosrite and is inexpensive) It didn't hold out too well, Sound wise. The body seemed fine though, I can't comment about the neck or frets as of May Fourth, 2009.
i can get it for €325,- it think the pickups suck with distortion but i think that's not wat these pickups are made for. P90's have the best tone on the planet and that's what i'm thinking about to put in this guitar! cheers
Get a Univox Hi-Flier instead of this crap, this is modern Chinese factory garbage. The Univox's are amazing, and the basses are the best production short-scales I've found.
Iv got a Marshall mg100 dfx, wouldnt say its bad, i was just tryna stop people like myself making the mistake of thinking this guitar is as good as it sounds on here. but buy one, let me know what u think
Don't buy this guitar, i did and i really regret it. Even tho this video makes it look good, its really not. Action its bad, neck is fat and every time you put distrotion through this thing its screams with feedback, in a bad way! Even during palm muting. I fell for this video but remember this is an Eastwood people (As in the guitar make) there hardly gunna say the guitar is crap. Look elsewhere, i wish i did. The p90's r crap, poor effort from eastwood in my opinion
I want a Mosrite because my favorite guitarist Ricky Wilson used them. However Mosrites are very expensive for me so I am thinking of buying an Eastwood. I need to know more about them before I decide though.
I went to high school with Ricky and played music with him prior the the formation of the B-52's. Ricky is way underappreciated as a guitarist- it's good to know that players out there are looking to follow his brilliant example. All the best, Owen (Dr. M)
I have a vintage Univox Hi-Flier (Phase Four) and I love it. Both the tone and action make it a pleasure to play. The only problem is that the body is so thin that neck joint is not very stable. That's why these Eastwood re-issues are an exciting proposition--the set neck joint looks to be a lot more sturdy. Ought to help sustain and playability.
I am looking for a good single-coil guitar that isn't a strat like everyone else has. So far I think either this or a Gibson Dual Pickup Melody Maker. They are the same price, and I know the gibson is a safe bet, but I like that staggered pickup setup and retro look on this model here. feel free to comment
yep, nice save! Here are some differences with the GIBSON - 1) it has a non-adjustable bridge so you cannot setup the intonation. That's a big issue. 2) it has Strat style single coil pickups, MUCH lower output than our P-90's. 3) in my opinion, a ho-hum body shape. So if you are looking to be a little different, go with the Hi-Flyer. If you want to blend in with the crowd (with poor intonation and low power) buy the Gibson!
Hear the feedback at 00:59 you hear that feedback a lot when you play this guitar at high gain. The pickups are not 'tried and true P-90's' they are very cheap single coils in a P-90 style case.
Went to my local high end guitar shop and played about twenty guitars yesterday. There was one G&L semi hollow body tele that sounded great and the other guitar that stood out regardless of price range was the Hi Flyer. Incredibly hot single coil pick ups that sound great no matter which position the switch is in. Bought this exact Hi Flyer because the G&L was $300 more and didn't look or sound any better.
The guy is only partially correct when he says that "it's a retro of a Ventures-style Mosrite." It's actually a copy of a Univox Hi-Flier, which itself was a copy of a Mosrite Ventures Model Mark I. So it'd be more accurate to say that it's a copy of a copy of a Mosrite.
I bought this Guitar and all I can say is, that it's quite phenomenal! If you are looking for a Blues or Rock Guitar, you can't get better in this Price Category!
When are you guys going to review the new phase 4? It looks exactly like a Univox Hi Flier Phase 4 from 1977. When you get one in black im buying it!

Kurt Cobain: Buy A 7ender!!!!
I have this in blueburst, its very overprice!
I payed 400€ !!! At first I thought this is made in Canada, but on the guitar is a little f@@ing sticker 'Made in China'.
The neck is fat and the whole guitar is heavier than my fender jaguar. P'90 have a good clean sound, but effectpedals sound shitty -.-
I like feedback but this is an ugly noise.
I think this gutiar is more an cheap Mosrite copy as an Univox Hi-Flyer.
