i prefer tall ballerinas for the swan lake, because they need to look like a swan. i wouldn't watch swan lake if they cast cojocaru whose height is just 5'2. for me, odette/odile must be at least 5'6. so i think gillot has a height perfect for this.
0:31 Can't you do only one attitude turn? After that you can do what you want (...) Try like this. Pirouette and a very quick derriere (...) Like this. It's difficult. (Pirouette) with the strenght of the leg.
02:11 It's good. And then the diagonale? How do you do it? (...) We can do it like that, or we can also do it a little different (...) Chaines... no! A small pause.
03:48 It's good. But in the 4th arabesque you must show your back. Arabesques have to be done differently. (1st, 2nd, 3th, 4th) You must see your scapula in the mirror. It would be even better if you did this...This is the fourth arabesque.
05:00 Then pas de bourree en pointe. It's the 5th. (...) You run diagonally. Pas de bourree. 2 turns... two more turns. Only twice... two turns. And from here other two.
I can't help thinking how frustrating (or at least challenging) it must be for someone like Maya, for whom expression, phrasing and artistry meant everything, to watch a technically good but boring, unmusical dancer trying to be Odile, a role Maya danced more and better than anyone else.
@theamazingsoter Obviously, we all have our preferences in terms of dancers, and I've only seen her in videos. I think she's very stiff in her upper body and even gawky although she's got great extension. She looks as if she might dance Balanchine very well but I dislike her Kitri and the Raymonda Grand Pas Classique. She doesn't get the style at all. There are a lot of dancers like her... great technique, athletic but no magic and not very expressive. Maya had the magic and more.
@kabardinka1 I also prefer musical dancers over the long legs/big extension type, but I think she has both qualities and her acting is also good. You can't just judge after watching a pair of Youtube videos. Her Kitri is not my favourite either, but she is an amazing Odile (and much better than the stiff Letestu IMO).
Technically this is usually considered the most difficult variation in all the classical repertoire, and she's performing an exceptionally difficult version at that!
@bolshoiboy8 AGREE... GPC is the most difficult female solo, technically, in style and interpretation Odette and Aurora first act...those two are heavy and strong!!
Maya doesn't age, this lady knows some very powerful secrets about how to achieve eternal youth. Good for her, because I do love her with all my heart. What a dancer! What an artist! A woman that suffered so much under a totalitarian communist regime, her father was killed by Stalin and her mother put in a concentration camp for years. Her memoirs is a must reading to know about this beautiful legend of the dance. God Bless You Maya Mikhailovna Plisetskaya!

OMG!!! Maya IS SHOWING her how to pose the Arabesques???? I thought this is something a Ballerina MUST know from the age of 6-7.....what a shame for Gillot...
Excuse you arabesques are different depending on the training you have.....a russin position could be different from what they teach in Paris so shame on you..
Just because Maya is going through the various arabesques with Gillot doesn't mean that she didn't know them to begin with; your comment is exceedingly silly.

Oh come on, the poor guy who has to lift the long legged heffer, Don't you feel sorry for him? Smaller petite dancers are much better!!!Anyway, who wants to see a giraffe on point dancing ballet?
Dancers look much more beautiful with long legs, long arms, and long necks. The lines are so much nicer to look at. Besides didn't Balanchine prefer taller ballerinas?
Marie-Agnes is stunning. I have a preference for tall dancers because they look ethereal and goddess-like on stage BECAUSE OF THEIR HEIGHT. She has beautiful LONG limbs and therefore can create longer lines. She is not a heffer. I am a very short dancer - and I ENVY tall dancers because TALL dancers look and create a sense of godliness to their dancing. She could dance circles around you any day - so if you have nothing pleasant to say don't say anything at all!
Hey Brewskyxxx why did you erase all those things you wrote about yourself? You know,.. about your big ugly nose,.. the fact that you look like a man,... all that stuff that made me laugh, about how you suffer from being kinda retarded,.. how terrible it must be!!, to be a women who looks like a man, and on top of that, has a WORLD of mental issues!
i AGREE JUMASHUMBA. EVEN THOUGH SHE HAS OK TECHNIQUE I DON'T SEE WHAT MAYA SAW IN HER. SHE IS KIND OF STIFF WITH NO PERSONALITY. AND SHE IS TOO BIG TO DANCE ON POINTE.
I like how she teaches, though i dont understand a thing, I wish all teachers (not just in dance) were like this, some just dont give a shit

Maya Plisetskaya est une immense danseuse, et tellement musicienne. Marie-Agnès, comme elle, possède une distinction souveraine.

Height doesn't matter. The trainor is probably short, so it makes the ballerina look taller.
