  • wtf??

I hear (also with closed eyes) and see /gɑ:/ !!

  • if you watch the video with the song, you will percept "Da Da'' ,now close your eyes.

your normaly hear "Ba Ba'' ,then turn off the sound and try to read on his lips. you see the sound "Ga" !

  • When people are explaining the Mcgurk effect, why do they all pretend to be sheep?

  • i heard "boobs"

  • ba ba both times.

  • wtf?... it works O__o ))))

  • Lady Gaga, Lady Baba or Lady Dada?

  • ba ba with eyes closed

ga ga with eyes open while watching the video

  • I hear da da with my eyes closed?

  • Holy shiiiiit I always thought I was immune to that shit ... Wow impressive.

  • та та та : DD

  • I heard GA-GA-GA-GA-GA

  • ba da ba da ba da

  • stupid tbh -.-

  • my Psychology teacher got super pissed when I called it the McDerp Effect :S

  • With your eyes OPEN if you concentrate and think BA BA you'll hear BABA. Brain 0 Me 1

  • when I'm looking at him, it's like he's just saying a a, but my mind feels like it's really trying to make it hear a sound before the a

  • what the..

  • WTF!? i heard BABA closed and GAGA open WTF!??

  • I heard BABA and I thought I was supposed to hear DADA, I replayed that motherf*cker 8 times.

  • i heard ba ba, ba ba, ba ba with my eyes shut then i heard la la la la la la with them open...

  • it says baba but his mouth moves like gaga

  • my peripheral vision seems to allow me to look to about the edge of the black on the sides before it's like my eyes are closed.

  • DERP DERP

  • hes saying baba baba baba close your eyes and you'll hear it.

Its a really cool that mcgurk effect

  • " GAGA , GAGA , GAGA " :DDDDDDDDDDDDD

  • With my eyes closed I hear babababababa, with my eyes open I hear baba gaga dada

  • i heard "who gives a shit"

  • Saw this on PBS episode "how does tge brain work" I was shocked

  • It may be the audio synching or the fact that I'm waiting for it but it sounds off. He sounds like a def person saying dah dah. But considering the senses involved it might make sense :P.

  • yestarday i could hear da-da and ba-ba, but now!!! he says only ba-ba, what's up?!

  • This is the best demo yet. My senses were really confused in isolation.

  • I hear whatever i think of, like when i think baba he says baba and when i think gaga he says gaga? :-S

  • I find the McGurk Effect does happen, but you can turn your mind against it if you try, and still hear the ba ba. Very interesting though, shows that our minds can trick us. Makes you wonder what other things aren't really happening the way we think they are. I think our whole reality is an illusion.

  • I guess some people must look more than they listen. All of the McGurk effect example has failed on me..!

  • I hear Rah rah ah-ah-ah!

    Ro mah ro-mah-mah

    Gaga Ooh-la-la!

    Want your bad romance

    ^^

  • Cool! Unlike some others on youtube, this demonstration of the McGurk effect is good enough that I can actually hear the "da da".

  • I only hear ba ba....

  • @UpForDanceroid maybe your brain is extraordinary. Or maybe you are just a wanker LoL

  • i open on the first closed and hte second and opened again on the third. i kept switching and it kept switching with me. really trippy!!!

  • ga ga ba ba da da.. this is some nooby shiet

  • eu entendi "da da da da da da "! :)

  • He's saying Ga ga visually the sound playing is Ba Ba and it should trick you into thinking it's Da Da.

  • oh my it is really different! Did anyone 'hear' something like a duck when listening with eyes open..?

  • @astroegg This thing's been up on YT for like 4 years, and no one has heard the duck! It really gets interesting when you play it backwards...

  • @hmcnally okay ha, I 'heard' : Ga gup.. ga.ga gA' gup

  • @hmcnally I didn't close my eyes at first because the video loads before I read the captions; anyway I really 'heard' that rhythm no matter how many times I replay it now!!

  • @hmcnally I guess its kind of annoying because I sort of 'internalise' that rhythm after a few playbacks that I can't even hear 'ba' without considerable effort even with my eyes closed...

  • @astroegg it makes sense, if the consonant is b (in the sound) and produced at the front of the mouth, and he is most likely articulating a g (ga ga) in the video which is produced in the back of the mouth, your brain compensates by finding a middle ground, namely da da, produced in the middleish of the mouth - hence duck...

  • wow man thats so tripped

  • il explain ... if you look with your eyes open , you see that his mouth is open all the time..so it's not posibble that he can say BABA , your brain knows that and makes GAGA or DADA from it .. but when u close ur eyes.. you hear the real sound ;)

  • Yup. Ba Da. But only if you close your eyes ;)

  • If you blink your eyes, you can hear 'ba da'

  • I hear "ba ba" both times...

  • @Rokusi666 yeah I too only hear baba

  • just watched BBC's "is seeing beleiving?"

the mcgurk effect does not work on me, i always can distinguish between

the spoken and what i see

this is not an effect at all, this is bullshit

  • @polyhydrant

Never assume that you are the norm.

  • @LantherZero But I am a Norm. Pleased to meet you.

  • @LantherZero define "the norm"...

  • :)))

  • When I watch it I hear ga ga

  • i hear ba ba with my eyes closed and da da with my eyes open... WEIRD

  • I can't seem to hear ga ga just from looking at his mouth. I hear ba ba looking and not looking.

  • ga ga with open eyes and ba ba with closed eyes :P

  • I very clearly hear "da da" every time. Not much of an illusion.

  • @LuckyVine i clearly hear "ba ba" every time. so clearly somethin is goin gon her e=P

  • @LuckyVine Well you shouldn't because he's saying "ba ba".

  • I hear ba ba either way?

  • This is so weird. I hear ga ga even when I close my eyes now.

  • @citricitri me too!!

  • @citricitri me too!

  • I'm pissed off at my brain right now...

  • hahaha at hawk4256. so true.

First video our psych prof showed us. so baffling until I finally read the explanation on multisensory interaction and integration.

  • I've just passed my exam in Cognitive psychology, and this was in my book I was learning from :)

    Psycholinguistic rules :)

  • This one is so much better than the other one.

  • Lady Baba! xD

  • when i close my eyes I hear "ba ba ba". when i open them i hear "hey man, have you seen my bong?"

  • @spare2288 i fucking love u

  • @spare2288 I literally laughed out loud at your comment :P

  • @spare2288 HAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHA!!!!!

  • With my eyes open I hear "ah, ah"; with them closed I hear "ba, ba". Weird.

  • Holy bick.

  • I hear 'Ba Ba' with my eyes closed and something between Ga Ga and Ba Ba with my eyes open.

  • @emberscatsootie It is more like da da for me.

Is he deaf, I mean someone who learned to speak wihtout hearing his own voice?

But it is interesting to how seeing the mouth move adds to hearing!

  • @mszs

"Is he deaf, I mean someone who learned to speak wihtout hearing his own voice?"

No, he's a probably grad student who's getting paid good money to make the noises wrong. Popping this audio track into Praat demonstrates quite clearly he isn't making the noises that go with the mouth motions.

Imagine having this guy working at a call center.

  • @zn1p3r0wnz You need therapy man...

  • I heard baba with eyes open and closed. :s

  • I hear BABA with my eyes closed and GAGA with my eyes open. What does that mean? :/

  • This got 187 thousand views... HOW????

  • Hells yeah, Psychology for the win!

  • try looking at him, while listening to any music. You can hear "ga ga" then. :D

  • i really tried to hear "ba ba" with open eyes ... but it's impossible o_O great, interesting thing :D

  • He's saying Da-da, but with an odd accent, that's why it sounds like he's saying Ba-ba.

  • I hear baba each time, eyes closed and open.

  • LOLWUT

  • Baba

  • I'm incapable of hearing anything but baba. Does that mean something? lol

  • I hear baba when I am looking at it and when I'm not, does this mean I'm special :)

  • @jupju that just means your perceptual set in this case is ba ba either way. You can hear either:

    baba gaga baba

    gaga baba gaga

if you think that's what he's saying. Someone should take the time to make a whole story that can be interpretted two ways because of the mcgurk effect haha

  • If you scroll your screen up and down while he is speaking to make his mouth before visible or not visible, it changes the effect.

  • The man is mouthing "ga ga" However, the sound is not the sound of the person in this video--it is a recording of someone saying "ba ba". The reason you hear "da da" when you watch this is because you brain is subtly informed that the movements of the mans mouth do not match the sound he is making, and it compensates by creating the "da da" sound--which is a sound articulated in between the "b" and the "g"

  • Aww crap, with my eyes open I hear GA-GA. Does this mean I have the dumbs?

  • Thats WIERD!!

  • wow150,00 +views.I guess a lot people are into the same stuff Im into

  • It's baba.

  • da da da da da da

ga ga ga ga ga ga

    ¡Menudo "experimento"!

  • first of all when you say ba ba ba you have to use you lips and your tongue(unless your realllllly good at vantrouiloquism) and finally do you see his tongue moving that much? when you say da da da you have to touch the roof of your mouth with your tongue try it so there for he has to be saying ga ga ga

  • i just keep hearing baba

  • ga ga da da ga da

  • You See Ga Ga, You hear Da Da, but hes saying Ba Ba.

Brain fixes errors it recognizes ;)

  • First time: Ba-ba, ba-ba, ba-ba

    Second time: Da-da da-da da-da

  • 1st time: ca va, dada, dada

2nd time: ca va, lala, haha

  • gaga baba gada first time

    baba baba baba second time...

  • I hear gaga with eyes open and baba with eyes closed.... I never hear dada.

Maybe its an effect of speaking multiple languages?

  • The mouth of the guy is in fact going 'gaga', so if you were purely lip-reading him, that's what you'd hear.

However, the reason why 98% adults hear 'dada' is because the sound of 'baba' is closer to that.

I'm not sure if speaking multiple languages has anything to do with it. Most likely you're just relying on your eyes more than most people.

    Hope that helps.

  • No its just that he has some speech impediment i think. My bro is studying to help ppl who have problems like this to speak normal. Example ppl the have lisps or ppl that have long r's like tweety bird

  • he's actually saying "baba," but he's moving his mouth as though he's saying "dada." That's why visually, you'll hear dada.

  • actually he's moving his mouth as though he's saying "gaga". It's the combined effect giving you "dada" rather than either sense dominating.

  • ah i see

  • LOL this one really baffled me for the first twenty times I played it - we just learned about it in a psychology lecture about nonverbal communication.

I found that if I tried really hard to hear "BA" with my eyes open, it is possible - but it's amusingly difficult.

  • It is strange I can't hear "DA-DA" with my eyes opened. I always hear "BA-BA" and just see the video as if it was out-of-sync with the audio.

  • and "ga ga" with sound turned off @ magga68

  • WHATZ!

  • "dada" with opened eyes and "baba" with closed eyes ..Cool! :))))

  • I hear something in between - sort of like a guy with a blocked nose saying 'GA GA' on a bad recording.

It's like Tao Te Ching (WadeGiles romanization), vs Dao De Jing (Pinyin romanization) - neither duplicates the sound being made - it's all just combined sensory representation.

    Synesthesia is our future!

  • I hear "baba" both times.

  • to be hearing the da da, you MUST be looking at the guy's face. looking anywhere else is probably why you are still hearing ba ba

  • I still hear BA BA,lol must mean im smart

  • BABA BABA BABA

    thumbs down please

  • If you can't hear the difference between the audio with your eyes open / eyes closed, you are TRYING not to hear the difference.

It is there, but it is subtle.

I can assure you, you aren't "smarter" than the test..

  • if you hear dada you are doomed indeed

  • I hear "ba ba" because that is what he is saying. If you hear "da da" then you are "doo-doomed"

  • I feel like at least half the people watching this have to be psychology students

  • ^truth. incidentally I'm studying for my Cognitive Psychology final and there's an essay question on this, so yea. you are correct sir.

  • The other half are linguistics students

  • @Foxyslacker or linguistics students

  • @Foxyslacker or students of english in my case.. :)

  • @Foxyslacker or linguistics students :)

  • @Foxyslacker Or linguistics students, we watched this in linguistics class.

  • @Foxyslacker you know too much about me!!!!

  • @Foxyslacker linguistics!

  • @ghillies4life and speech therapy students!

  • @Foxyslacker

With the other half being linguistics students :)

  • I hear him saying "ba ba" with my eyes open, even though I'm supposed to hear "da da". I wonder if that implies that my brain relies more on auditory perception rather than visual perception?

  • Comment removed

  • Lady Gaga would not be happy being called Lady Baba

  • @hawk4256 no she would not cause she want to be gaged!

  • @hawk4256 best youtube comment ever

  • It is gaga :D

  • lol, i don't know if it's the quality of my speakers, or if the ear-training classes i've taken is to blame, but even when i'm watching the vid, i hear baba. might just be my speakers...i dunno.

  • Wow... I watched it a load of times and then when I closed my eyes it still said dada... Does this mean I have cancer?!?!

  • Comment removed

  • Whenever I close my eyes and hear it, sounds like he's saying "baba" and when i open my eyes, he's saying "dada", holy shit!

  • That guy there is saying "ga-ga", However the sound we are hearing really is "ba-ba". Our auditory and visual cortex's are trying to distinguish what he is actually saying, so it makes up a "middle-ground" sound, "da-da". We learned of this effect in my Sensation and Perception class.

  • He's saying ga ga

  • students at Linguistics in Aarhus, Denmark are using this video in an experiment

  • oh my God!

  • also interesting is that some people hear da da and others ga ga

  • WAT THE---

    HOW DID HE DO THAT?

  • gaga baba baba

  • @dxhhhhbk8081 y are people thumbs downing him? thats exactly what it sounds like

  • when i closed my eyes it was ba ba

and when i opened them he said da da

    haha

  • Uh... What does it mean if we hear gah gah?

Eyes closed and I can't distinguish two sounds.

  • this happened to be before in one of the classes i watched this video in

i tried watching it again sometime after and it worked

maybe it will work for you too

    :D

  • hes saying ba ba to me all the time

  • baba gaga baba thats what i hear

  • I play it, then open and close my eyes and it is a combination of ba da da, depending on when I close or open.

  • I thought he said baba, bada, baba

  • wow that is freajky stuff

  • Awesome! I will now accept you as my new overlord.

  • On first one in closing eyes i hear ba ba but when opening and listening i see ga ga ga

  • yep, me too :)

  • Me too!

  • i just hear baba

  • agreed, i was thinbking wtf is this shit it doesnt do shit...

  • he sounds like a demented chicken

  • he says babadadabada

  • I hear " dada " in the first and second one, and i hear " dabda " in the last...

  • i hear baba for both
