It may be the audio synching or the fact that I'm waiting for it but it sounds off. He sounds like a def person saying dah dah. But considering the senses involved it might make sense :P.
I find the McGurk Effect does happen, but you can turn your mind against it if you try, and still hear the ba ba. Very interesting though, shows that our minds can trick us. Makes you wonder what other things aren't really happening the way we think they are. I think our whole reality is an illusion.
@hmcnally I didn't close my eyes at first because the video loads before I read the captions; anyway I really 'heard' that rhythm no matter how many times I replay it now!!
@hmcnally I guess its kind of annoying because I sort of 'internalise' that rhythm after a few playbacks that I can't even hear 'ba' without considerable effort even with my eyes closed...
@astroegg it makes sense, if the consonant is b (in the sound) and produced at the front of the mouth, and he is most likely articulating a g (ga ga) in the video which is produced in the back of the mouth, your brain compensates by finding a middle ground, namely da da, produced in the middleish of the mouth - hence duck...
il explain ... if you look with your eyes open , you see that his mouth is open all the time..so it's not posibble that he can say BABA , your brain knows that and makes GAGA or DADA from it .. but when u close ur eyes.. you hear the real sound ;)
"Is he deaf, I mean someone who learned to speak wihtout hearing his own voice?"
No, he's a probably grad student who's getting paid good money to make the noises wrong. Popping this audio track into Praat demonstrates quite clearly he isn't making the noises that go with the mouth motions.
@jupju that just means your perceptual set in this case is ba ba either way. You can hear either:
baba gaga baba
gaga baba gaga
if you think that's what he's saying. Someone should take the time to make a whole story that can be interpretted two ways because of the mcgurk effect haha
The man is mouthing "ga ga" However, the sound is not the sound of the person in this video--it is a recording of someone saying "ba ba". The reason you hear "da da" when you watch this is because you brain is subtly informed that the movements of the mans mouth do not match the sound he is making, and it compensates by creating the "da da" sound--which is a sound articulated in between the "b" and the "g"
first of all when you say ba ba ba you have to use you lips and your tongue(unless your realllllly good at vantrouiloquism) and finally do you see his tongue moving that much? when you say da da da you have to touch the roof of your mouth with your tongue try it so there for he has to be saying ga ga ga
No its just that he has some speech impediment i think. My bro is studying to help ppl who have problems like this to speak normal. Example ppl the have lisps or ppl that have long r's like tweety bird
LOL this one really baffled me for the first twenty times I played it - we just learned about it in a psychology lecture about nonverbal communication.
I found that if I tried really hard to hear "BA" with my eyes open, it is possible - but it's amusingly difficult.
I hear something in between - sort of like a guy with a blocked nose saying 'GA GA' on a bad recording.
It's like Tao Te Ching (WadeGiles romanization), vs Dao De Jing (Pinyin romanization) - neither duplicates the sound being made - it's all just combined sensory representation.
I hear him saying "ba ba" with my eyes open, even though I'm supposed to hear "da da". I wonder if that implies that my brain relies more on auditory perception rather than visual perception?
lol, i don't know if it's the quality of my speakers, or if the ear-training classes i've taken is to blame, but even when i'm watching the vid, i hear baba. might just be my speakers...i dunno.
That guy there is saying "ga-ga", However the sound we are hearing really is "ba-ba". Our auditory and visual cortex's are trying to distinguish what he is actually saying, so it makes up a "middle-ground" sound, "da-da". We learned of this effect in my Sensation and Perception class.
wtf??

Maybe its an effect of speaking multiple languages?
narcotichobo 1 year ago
The mouth of the guy is in fact going 'gaga', so if you were purely lip-reading him, that's what you'd hear.
However, the reason why 98% adults hear 'dada' is because the sound of 'baba' is closer to that.
I'm not sure if speaking multiple languages has anything to do with it. Most likely you're just relying on your eyes more than most people.
Hope that helps.
