Moderates make up the most of this country. They don't toe the line of what their so-called political betters demand left or right. They would rather be left alone and tend to vote for the party that seems to be less crazy at the time with their political agenda and policy. You want people to come over to your side to vote on election day be inclusive, build on a foundation of mutal understanding and accept (or for some people here tolerate) that no one will fit your idea of a party 100%.
Hey, being radical has worked for the loony left. They got one of their own guys in the White House, and one of their own gals running the House of Representatives.
Conservatives need to stand up and be conservative. Promote the rightness of your ideas. Compare and contrast them with socialist/ humanist ideas. Which ones really work to promote a more free and just society. Let the party(s) come to you.
I am profoundly disappointed in Newt Gingrich. Really didn't think he was all about winning regardless of principles. You see what supporting a moderate with the Republican "label" got us in 2008 - Barack Obama. Never again.
The way he described his take on it was that he was standing up for his principles which were to let the local district decide. They decided on a person with which he doesn't really agree but it was done on a local level as he supports.
His point is that if you want to get the people they want you have to act on a local level to do it. The more conservative didn't have the backing of the people until after the nominations and he came out and made himself known.

When you sell out to moderates you lose your political soul. Either do it right or get out of the way.

Republicans dont win dogcatcher if they flip the finger at Conservatives. They need to learn a lesson or die as a Party.
