They changed it for hornet just because of money, US navy needs a cheap and pretty good plane. Ofcoure hornets are not that good like F-14s were, and not that much beatuiful, but they are better than nothing

@glazuna It's cheaper because it has 30% fewer parts than the F14, which makes it much easier to maintain. And sadly, the F18 is better. Don't get me wrong, I would rather fly a cargo plane full of rubber dog shit out of hong kong (ha, pun) than fly the F18. But they didn't just replace it because it was alright, and they wouldn't just replace a good plane with one that wasn't better.

@shifty2757 with tehnology is f-14 better, phonex missile, extreme radar, big amount of multi lock on and much more, hornet could be better only because of manoeuvrability.But Top Gun pilots were trained to beat even planes like this... :P

@glazuna Again, why would they replace a plane with one that isn't anywhere as good? You don't think the F18 does any of that stuff better? I would like it if the F14 did do it better but there's a reason why the F14 was replaced with the F/A-18. Well now pilots train at Top Gun with 18's to be better than planes like the Mig-29.

@shifty2757 hornets can't beat MiG-29, because hornets are almost only for short range, and MiG-29 has missiles for long range, so it can shut down hornets before they can engage them. and you can't say that F/A-18 is better because F-14 and hornet are completly different planes for different purposes. Hornet is for dogfight on SHORT RANGE and maybe for a mini bombing. F-14 is for dogfight too(not that good as hornet), LONG RANGE interceptor(because of defending fleet), bomber.and too expensive.

@shifty2757 they replaced it because of running out of spare parts, and if they would want to get them, they would need to start a new production, and this would cost a lot, and also F-14 was very expensive, it lost 40% of it's point when they retire Phonex missile (multi target extra long range radar guided missile for ground objects,underwater objects or airplanes.) So if they would still have phonex missiles i think they wouldn't retire it.

@shifty2757 McDonald Douglas/Boeing Bought out Dick Cheny to get the Super Hornet to replace the F-14. Also, the main reason for retiring the tomcat (Which is bullshit) was high maintinance.

@glazuna Actually, the F/A-18 Can engage a MiG-29 at long range using AMRAMMs at up to 72 klicks. Also, the F-14 can actually out-dogfight a Super hornet as long as it stays in the vertical.
